Johnstown Inclined Plane

The Johnstown Inclined Plane is a 896.5-foot funicular in Johnstown, Cambria County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. The incline and its two stations connect the city of Johnstown, situated in a valley at the confluence of the Stonycreek and the Little Conemaugh Rivers, to the borough of Westmont on Yoder Hill. The Johnstown Inclined Plane is billed as the "worlds steepest vehicular inclined plane", as it is capable of carrying automobiles, in addition to passengers, up or down a slope with a grade of 70.9 percent. The travel time from one station to the other is 90 seconds. After a catastrophic flood in 1889, the Johnstown Inclined Plane was completed in 1891 to serve as an escape route for future floods, as well as a convenient mode of transportation for the residents of the new communities situated above the valley. It was operated by Cambria Iron Company and its successor Bethlehem Steel until 1935, when it was sold to the borough of Westmont. The incline was briefly shut down in 1962 when its supply of power from Bethlehem Steel was terminated. Twice in its history, the Johnstown Inclined Plane fulfilled its role as a means of evacuation from floods—once in 1936 and again in 1977. The incline was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and was designated a Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark in 1994. It had major renovations in 1962 and from 1983 to 1984.

Downtown Johnstown Historic District is a national historic district located at Johnstown in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The district includes 109 contributing buildings, 4 contributing sites, and 1 contributing structure in the central business district and surrounding residential areas of Johnstown. The district includes some buildings dated before the Johnstown Flood, but the majority date from 1890 to 1930. Notable buildings include the Alma Hall, Bantley Building, Stenger Dry Goods Store, Widmann Building, Cambria Iron Office Building, St. Vincent DePaul Building, Swank Building, Glosser Brothers Department Store, Johnstown City Hall, former U.S. Post Office, State Theater, U.S. Post Office, Franklin Street United Methodist Church, St. John Gualbert Cathedral, First United Methodist Church, Elks Building, and Moose Building . Located in the district and listed separately are the Cambria Public Library Building, G.A.R. Hall, and Nathans Department Store. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center

The Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center is a 42,000-square-foot multipurpose facility of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown . It contains a 1,000-seat concert hall, a 200-seat black box theater, and supporting administrative spaces. PPAC is located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, USA, on the campus of UPJ. The auditorium is the home of the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Johnstown Concert Ballet, River City Brass Band, and serves as home for the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art satellite exhibitions. Every year the Arts Center presents a variety of high quality performing arts events including the Mainstage Series, Winter Jazz, Stage Door Series for children, and UPJ Theater Department Performances. The building was constructed in 1991 as a gift from Frank and Sylvia Pasquerilla.

Cambria City Historic District

Cambria City Historic District is a national historic district located at Johnstown in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The district includes 198 contributing buildings and 1 contributing structure in a predominantly working-class residential area of Johnstown. Though predominantly residential, it also includes a small business district and industrial buildings such as a former brewery, bottling plant, and slaughter house, along with a notable collection of churches, schools, and fire station. The district includes some buildings dated before the Johnstown Flood, but the majority date from 1890 to 1920. Notable buildings include the collection of two-story, balloon frame, detached and semi-detached dwellings, Fifth Avenue Hotel , Pollack Building , former Cambria Fire Hose and Ladder Company , former Germana Brewery , August and Louisa Mayer Building , Tulip Bottling Company , St. Casimer's Polish Church , Immaculate Conception Church , St. Stephen's Slovak Church , St. Columba Church , St. Mary's Greek Catholic Church , Venue Of Merging Arts (formerly St. George's Orthodox Church, 1911), Hungarian Reformed Church (1902), and First Catholic Slovak Band Hall . The contributing structure is the Minersville Bridge . It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Wagner–Ritter House & Garden

The Wagner–Ritter House & Garden, located in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, is a modest house that was occupied for 130 years by three generations of a steel worker's family, from the 1860s to the 1990s. The house and garden have been restored by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association. The historic house museum illustrates the domestic lives of this immigrant family, interpreting the home lives of the thousands who toiled in the shadow of the mill. The Wagner-Ritter House is located on Broad Street in the Cambria City neighborhood. The rooms of the house display appliances and furnishings of the 1800s as well as a 19th-century German raised bed garden. The yard contains a barn, privy, and a bake oven shelter that have been recreated based on historical and archeological evidence. The four room home was built by George and Franziska Wagner and it grew to include seven rooms after the birth of their thirteen children. This house is one of about a dozen remaining structures in this working-class neighborhood that survived the Johnstown Flood. History tells a story of the significance of the house during the flood. As the family was huddled on the second floor, they were able to drag a woman out the floodwater to safety through a window. The Johnstown Area Heritage Association also operates the Johnstown Flood Museum and the Heritage Discovery Center, which includes the Johnstown Children's Museum.

Stackhouse Park

Stackhouse Park is a park in Westmont, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Johnstown. It is over 277 acres with 7 miles of hiking and bicycling trails. The wooded, deep ravine was gifted to the City of Johnstown in 1930 by Powell Stackhouses father, in remembrance of his son, who at the time, was the president of Cambria Iron Company. The park had been privately owned since the 1920s and was given to the city of Johnstown by Powell Stackhouses father, the president of Cambria Iron Works, in remembrance of his son. The deed stipulates the land may never be timbered for profit and cannot be developed. Between 1935 and 1936, Company 1397 of the federal Civilian Conservation Corps focused its efforts on the park. The CCC constructed the pavilion buildings used for picnicking, 26 fire pits and 2-1/2-miles of knapped road. All of these sites can be seen in the park today. The CCC was called away to other locations with the 1936 Johnstown flood. With the CCC no longer working in the park and the City of Johnsown, as its owner, having no provision for maintaining it, the park began to deteriorate. Several minor work projects were undertaken the 1970s with trail clearance and stream bank restoration. Trail heads are located on Luzerne Street, opposite the Westmont Hilltop Middle School, and at D Street in the West End section of Johnstown. It also features seasonal guided hikes, educational programs, and live plays.

Peoples Natural Gas Park

Peoples Natural Gas Park is located near the Cambria Iron National Historic Landmark at the junction of the Conemaugh and Stoneycreek Rivers and there is a view of the Stone Bridge and the Johnstown Inclined Plane. Located on 3.5 acres, the park has an outdoor pavilion that seats 600 as well as the adjacent Oilhouse that seats about 560. Funded by Peoples Natural Gas for The Johnstown Area Heritage Association. The newly completed Peoples Natural Gas Park is the home of the AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival and many other special events produced by the Johnstown Area Heritage Association and other organizations. The park includes landscaping, new restrooms, pathways and new sidewalks, ornamental fencing and gates around the perimeter. The music festival has been staged here with temporary infrastructure since 2004. The festival utilizes the 3.5 acre park, Walnut Street and the parking lots across from the train station. Located across the river from Point Stadium and beside the Cambria Iron National Historic Landmark, the Peoples Natural Gas Park provides a beautiful view of downtown Johnstown, including the Inclined Plane and the Johnstown Flood Museum. The park is bordered by the Johnstown Urban Greenway, and stretches to the Johns Street Bridge. The historic Stone Bridge, which has been lighted in colorful, programmable LED lights, is located at one end of the park. Every evening the bridge is lighted for three hours, beginning with a 20-minute lightshow before settling into a static scheme chosen to reflect the time of year, holidays, or special events and observances. The bridge will be lighted during festival hours, starting at dusk. Development of the Park Since the purchase of the park’s land in 2004, the Johnstown Area Heritage Association has been working to develop it as a permanent home for the music festival and as a catalyst for more special events. On May 23, 2011, a naming ceremony was held to name the park for the Peoples Natural Gas Co., which has donated $500,000 toward the project. Construction began in fall 2011 and was completed in May 2012. The master plan for the park is by L.R. Kimball. The master plan was developed with input from a study committee in 2005-2006, public meetings in 2006, and individual discussions with agencies that have supported the project or might use it. Primary contractors on the project are Wilson Construction Inc., Mervac Plumbing & Heating, Inc., Church & Murdock Electric, Inc. and JWF Industries. Park Financing A $2 million matching grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Project was awarded to JAHA in spring 2008 for the park's development. In 2011, the Peoples Natural Gas donation completed the match. Several other major grants made the project possible, including a $100,000 grant from the Katherine Mabis McKenna Foundation. The Johnstown Redevelopment Authority provided matching Environmental Protection Agency Brownfield Cleanup funds. Also, the Authority was instrumental in undertaking the environmental assessment of the park and obtaining PA DEP Environmental Clearance. A grant for design costs was obtained from the Community Conservation Program, Growing Greener Fund, administered by the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Bureau of Recreation and Conservation. A $100,000 grant from Mark Pasquerilla assisted with initial improvements to the property, which included the removal of underground gas tanks and installation of utility infrastructure. Other donors to the park include William Polacek; the Southwestern Pennsylvania Heritage Preservation Commission; JAHA's Board of Directors; and other supporters and friends of JAHA.

Grandview Cemetery

Grandview Cemetery is a cemetery located at 801 Millcreek Road in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. The cemetery association that operates Grandview was founded in 1885 to accommodate Johnstown's rapidly growing population. The first interment was that of Lucretia Hammond of Kernville (now a part of Johnstown), who was buried on April 30, 1887. The land for the cemetery, west of the city on Yoder Hill, was purchased from the Cambria Iron Company. In the late 1880s, a steep and winding mile-long road named Millcreek Road was constructed to the original entrance of the cemetery, but in 1904 it was found necessary to create a new entrance to the cemetery at Bucknell Avenue. The cemetery is best known because of the aftermath of the Johnstown Flood of 1889. Many of the flood's 2,209 victims are buried there. A section of the cemetery called the "Unknown Plot" contains the bodies of 777 flood victims who could not be identified. A monument to the flood victims was purchased by the state of Pennsylvania and dedicated on May 31, 1892 before a crowd estimated at 10,000 that included the governor of Pennsylvania. As of March 31, 1992, the total number of interments at Grandview was 57,006. The cemetery contains 47 burial sections and more than 235 acres (0.95 km2), and is one of the largest in Pennsylvania.

Cambria Public Library Building

Cambria Public Library Building, also known as Carnegie Public Library, is a historic library building located at Johnstown, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. It was built in 1890-1891, with funds provided by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It is one of 3,000 such libraries constructed between 1885 and 1919. Carnegie provided all funds toward the construction and maintenance of the library through 1930. It is a three-story brick building with a tile roof encased in dormers in the French Gothic revival style. It was damaged in the Johnstown Flood of 1936 and ceased to function as a library in 1971. The building houses the Johnstown Flood Museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. It is located in the Downtown Johnstown Historic District.

The Johnstown Galleria

The Johnstown Galleria is a two-level, enclosed super-regional shopping mall in Richland Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, southeast of the city of Johnstown. Opened in 1992, the mall includes The Bon-Ton, Boscov's, J.C. Penney, Sears and Shoe Dept. Encore as anchor tenants and over 100 retailers such as American Eagle Outfitters, Books-A-Million, Champs Sports, Crazy 8, Justice, Sephora and Yankee Candle Company. With over 894,646 square feet of retail space, the mall is one of the largest shopping complexes in west-central Pennsylvania. Surrounding the mall are over 20 retailers and dining establishments. A variety of restaurants and outparcels such as Applebee's, Ashley Furniture, Chuck E. Cheese's, Gander Mountain, The Home Depot, Lone Star Steakhouse & Saloon, Lowe's Home Improvement Warehouse and Red Lobster completes the mall complex. The mall is owned by Gemini Real Estate Advisors, LLC of New York and operated by Zamias Services, Inc. of Johnstown. It is located off the Galleria Drive exit of U.S. Route 219 in Richland Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania near the interchange of Pennsylvania Route 56.
