Château Frontenac

The Château Frontenac is a grand hotel in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada, which is operated as Fairmont Le Château Frontenac. Château Frontenac is situated at an elevation of 54 m . It was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1980. Prior to the building of the hotel, the site was occupied by the Château Haldimand, residence of the British colonial governors of Lower Canada and Quebec. The hotel is generally recognized as the most photographed hotel in the world, largely for its prominence in the skyline of Quebec City.

Ramparts of Quebec City

Located in Canada, the Ramparts of Quebec City are the only remaining fortified city walls in North America north of Mexico. The British began refortifying the existing walls, after they took Quebec City from the French in the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in 1759. The wall surrounds most of Old Quebec, which was declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1985. The fortifications were designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1948.

Old Quebec Funicular

The Old Quebec Funicular is a funicular railway in the Old Quebec neighbourhood of the city of Quebec in Canada. It links the Haute-Ville to the Basse-Villewhich includes such sites as the ancient Notre Dame des Victoires church, the historic Petit Champlain district, the port, and the Musée de la civilisation . The funicular opened on November 17, 1879, and originally used the water ballast system of propulsion, similar to that still used by the Nerobergbahn in Wiesbaden, Germany. The line was converted to electrical operation in 1907. On July 2, 1945, a major fire destroyed the structure, necessitating a rebuild that was completed in 1946. Since then, major renovations have taken place in 1978 and 1998. In 2004 it celebrated 125 years of operating. In October 1996, Briton Helen Toombs was killed when the cable snapped and the emergency brake failed to stop the cabin before it crashed into the lower station. Due to this accident the funicular was closed until 1998. Musée de la civilisation

The Musée de la civilisation à Québec is a museum located in Quebec City. It is situated in the historic Old Québec area near the Saint Lawrence River. It was designed by architect Moshe Safdie, and opened its doors to the public on 19 December 1988. The previous buildings of the Banque de Paris and the Maison Estèbe, which were situated on Saint-Pierre street, were integrated in the museums structure. Permanent and temporary exhibitions are held at the museum, usually related to humanities, and virtual exhibitions are also available. The institution also hosts Quartier des découvertes, geared towards children, and offers other services such as guided visits, a French America reference centre, shows, souvenir boutiques, a cafeteria, and a leisure room.

In 1985, the seminary transferred the secondary school to a new secular not-for-profit organization, "le Collège François-de-Laval", which was given the right to use the "Petit Séminaire de Québec" name. Many French-Canadian clergy of the 18th and 19th century, as well as innumerable academics, went through the Petit Séminaire before higher education became widely accessible. Until 1970, the Superior of the Seminary was also the Rector of Université Laval, which was originally an offshoot of it. Another school, Le Petit Séminaire de Québec, campus de l'Outaouais was founded as a branch of the school in the Outaouais area of western Quebec. A separate organization with a similar name, the Petit séminaire diocésain de Québec, is a residential school for boys considering the Roman Catholic priesthood, managed by the Séminaire de Québec. Of 867 students who lived at the Petit Séminaire during the French period, 198 graduated. Of these, 118 became priests or brothers, and 80 chose other occupations, according to research by historian Mgr Amédée Gosselin

City Hall of Quebec City

The City Hall of Quebec City is located in the heart of Old Quebec in Quebec City, Quebec. It was inaugurated on September 15, 1896. The building slopes downward as it was built on a hill and was once home to the Jesuit College from the 1730s to 1878. The city hall was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1984. From 1842 to 1896 City Hall sat at home of British Army Major General William Dunnson of former administrator Thomas Dunn . Prior to 1842 the city government sat a various sites. The formal city council was established in 1833. The building used a mixture of Classical, Medieval and Châteauesque elements.

Gare du Palais

Gare du Palais is a train and bus station in Quebec City, Canada. Its name comes from its proximity to the Palace of the Intendant of New France. It is served by Via Rail, Canada’s national passenger railway, and by the private coach company Orléans Express. Built in 1915 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the two-storey châteauesque station is similar in design to the Château Frontenac. The station had no passenger rail service from 1976 to 1985, although it once again hosts regular daily services west to Montreal's Central Station via Drummondville. It was designated a Heritage Railway Station in 1992.

Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec

The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec is a museum in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada gathering approximately 25,000 works essentially produced in Quebec, or by Quebec artists, some of which dating from the 18th century. It has also housed a library since 1987. It is located on the Plains of Abraham, in The Battlefields Park. Founded in 1933, the museum was first known as the "Musée de la province de Québec", then as the "Musée du Québec" from 1961 before being rechristened in 2002 of its current denomination by the Bernard Landry government. It consists of three pavilions, each in a distinct building. One of these is the old prison of Quebec City, dating from the 19th century, and the interior is a contemporary witness of carceral life in the era. Since 1995, the museum receives financial support from a foundation called La Fondation du Musée.

Cathedral Church of the Holy Trinity

The Cathedral of the Holy Trinity is the cathedral of the Anglican Diocese of Quebec and home to two parishes: the Parish of Quebec and la Paroisse de Tous les Saints. The Diocese of Quebec was founded in 1793 and its first bishop, Dr. Jacob Mountain, gave his early attention to the erection of a cathedral. The completed building, designed by military officers William Robe and William Hall and built between 1800 and 1804, was consecrated on August 28, 1804. It was the first Anglican cathedral to be built outside of the British Isles.

Édifice Price

The Édifice Price is an 18-floor skyscraper in Quebec City, Canada. Built in 1930-1931 amid controversy for Price Brothers ltd., it is the tallest building in the Old Quebec historical district, and one of the oldest skyscrapers in Canada. The building is the property of the Quebec City municipal administration, but is leased to and used by the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec. A memorial is attached to the building. In 2001, it became the location of an official residence for the Premier of Quebec, which occupies two of the upper floors.

Grand Théâtre de Québec

The Grand Théâtre de Québec is an arts complex in Quebec City, Canada. It was conceived to commemorate the Canadian Centennial of 1967 and the Quebec Conference, 1864, one of the key meetings leading to the Canadian Confederation of 1867. Designed by Polish-Canadian architect Victor Prus, construction began in 1966 under Premier Jean Lesage but was stopped by the Union Nationale government of Daniel Johnson. Construction resumed in late 1967 but the theatre was not officially opened until January 16, 1971. The theatre has two venues: Salle Louis Fréchette, with 1875 seats, is named after the 19th-century French-Canadian writer Louis-Honoré Fréchette. Salle Octave Crémazie, with 506 seats, is named after the 19th-century Canadian poet, Octave Crémazie, who was known as "the father of French-Canadian poetry". Since October 1972 the Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Québec has been located in the Grand Théâtres complex. In 1991 the theatre complex housed 49 classrooms, 70 teaching and practice studios, and a multi-media centre with a recording studio and electroacoustic lab. The complex is also home to an impressive library which in 1991 included more than 60,000 documents of books, scores, monographs, periodicals, and recordings in various media formats. The theatre was used for the 1985 Shamrock Summit when Prime Minister Brian Mulroney entertained U.S. President Ronald Reagan. Organizations which use the theatre include the Orchestre symphonique de Québec, the Théâtre du Trident, and the Opéra de Québec. The Quebec City Summer Festival often hosts events in the theatre.

Plains of Abraham

The Plains of Abraham is a historic area within The Battlefields Park in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The land is the site of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which took place on 13 September 1759, but hundreds of acres of the fields became used for grazing, housing, and minor industrial structures. Only in 1908 was the land ceded to Quebec City, though administered by the specifically created and federally run National Battlefields Commission. The park is today used by 4 million visitors and tourists annually for sports, relaxation, outdoor concerts, and festivals.

Quebec Skating Rink

Quebec Skating Rink was the name of several ice rinks in Quebec City, Quebec. The first was built in 1851, and was the world's first covered skating rink, and was located near the St. Lawrence River. The second rink, built in 1864, was situated on the Grand-Allée, as were the third and fourth rinks. The rinks were developed initially for ice skating, but the developing sport of ice hockey, saw the inauguration of the Quebec Hockey Club in the 1880s, which would use the rink as their home rink. The hockey club would move to the new, larger Quebec Arena in 1913.

Quebec City Armoury

The Voltigeurs de Québec Armoury, formerly Grande-Allée Armoury , was built as a Gothic Revival drill hall for the infantry regiment Les Voltigeurs de Québec at 805 Wilfrid-Laurier Avenue East, Quebec City, Canada. Designed by architect Eugène-Étienne Taché and constructed between 1885 and 1888, it is a National Historic Site of Canada. Partially destroyed by fire in 2008, the armoury has received a commitment from the Canadian national government to be rebuilt by 2016.

St. Patrick's Church

Clarendon Hotel

The Clarendon Hotel, or Clarendon House , is a high-end hotel in the historic part of Quebec City. It is the oldest continuously operating hotel in the city. The original building, on the corner of Rue Sainte-Anne and des Jardins, was a house built in 1858 and designed by Charles Baillairgé. Originally built as a 4-storey house, it was almost immediately sold to Queen's Printers George-Édouard Desbarats and Stewart Derbishire. The building hosted the printers until 1870, when it became the Russel House hotel, which was sold in 1894, and renamed the Clarendon Hotel. The hotel changed hands again several times until it became part of the Dufour Group hotels. Important extensions and modifications were made to the building during the 20th century: two extra floors with mansard roof and a six-floor Art Deco extension at 57 Rue Sainte-Anne where the main entrance, originally on des Jardins, was relocated. Soon after, another extension was built to enlarge the hotel. The hotel boasts a fine French restaurant, Le Charles Baillairgé, and a bar, L'Emprise, were renowned live jazz shows used to be held until 2006. The main architectural interest of the building is its brick Art Deco façade, completed in 1927 and designed by Raoul Chênevert. It also has Art nouveau cast iron grilles and canopy, giving it a unique combination of styles. Built a few years before neighbouring Édifice Price, its decoration is more geometric than figurative. The building still keeps its wicket entrance. The hotel serves as a backdrop to Nicole Brossard's novel Yesterday, at the Hotel Clarendon .

Quebec City Summer Festival

The Quebec City Summer Festival (Festival d'été de Québec in French, also known as by its acronym FEQ) is an annual 11-day music festival in downtown Quebec City normally starting on the first Thursday of July. With its 127,000 passes sold, a total attendance of about 1.5 million festival-goers year in year out and its hundreds of performances spread over a dozen venues, the festival has established itself as a major player on the music festival circuit. Its main stage ( the largest of its kind in North America ) is located on the historic Plains of Abraham with a site capacity of over 100,000 (102,000 at The Rolling Stones concert in 2015). The festival is also known for its eclectic musical selection and its urban setting, with most venues in the downtown area and within walking distance of each other.

The brutalist style tower is the tallest building in the city, as well as the tallest building in Canada east of Montreal. Situated in the Parliament Hill borough, the building houses most notably the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports, the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment and Parks, as well the Observatoire de la Capitale observation deck.
