Dilek Peninsula National Park

Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park, established on May 19, 1966, is a national park in western Turkey. It contains within its borders the entirety of the Dilek Peninsula as well as the large delta of the Büyük Menderes River. It is located in the Kuşadası district of Aydın Province, and as such it is also within the bounds of Turkeys Aegean Region. Directly west of the national park is the small coastal town of Güzelçamlı, where several shuttle buses and ferries operate to and from the districts center of Kuşadası, approximately 30 km from the park. The park is among the most biologically diverse of Turkeys national parks. It is the native and migratory habitat of hundreds of species of birds, mammals, plants, and marine life, some of which are entirely endemic to the park and cannot be observed anywhere else in the world. For these reasons, it is protected by numerous wildlife and wetland conventions, and is of great national and international importance in these areas. It is separated from the Greek island of Samos by a very narrow strait, known as the Mycale Strait . The strait is named after Mount Mycale, the highest and most prominent mountain of the peninsula, and is one of the narrowest straits in the Aegean Sea.

Cave of Zeus

The Cave of Zeus is a show cave located in Kuşadası, Aydın Province, in the Aegean Region of western Turkey. The cave is within Dilek Peninsula-Büyük Menderes Delta National Park, immediately west of the town of Güzelçamlı in Kuşadası district. It is situated about 200 m west of the national parks entrance at Dilek Peninsula. The cave is reached by a 20 m long slippery, stoney trail southwards. The caves mouth is hidden from view, as it is covered with trees, plants and flowers. The cave can be accessed from the districts center of Kuşadası via dolmuş, which shuttle the route to and from Güzelçamlı regularly. The cave was formed as a result of a sinkhole eroding a kalk formation by a subterranean river. Its base has the shape of a pool. The blue-green colored carbonated mineral water of the cave is a brackish mixture of spring water from the mountain and salty seawater. The deep pool attracts the attention of local and foreign visitors year-round for bathing and swimming. The cave is 10–15 m deep and 10–13 m wide with a length of 20 m . According to Ancient Greek mythology, Zeus, the Olympian ruler of the skies, used to hide in the cave to escape the fury of his brother Poseidon, the ruler of the seas after Zeus angered him. Poseidon, in his wrath, would unleash very high waves and other dangerous water conditions with his trident. As a popular habit visitors tie a cloth piece on a wishing tree next to the caves mouth in the hope that their wish comes true.

Mycale

Mycale . also Mykale and Mykali, called Samsun Daği and Dilek Daği in modern Turkey, is a mountain on the west coast of central Anatolia in Turkey, north of the mouth of the Maeander and divided from the Greek island of Samos by the 1300 metre wide Samos Strait. The mountain forms a ridge, terminating in what was known anciently as the Trogilium promontory . There are several beaches on the north shore ranging from sand to pebbles. The south flank is mainly escarpment. In classical Greece nearly the entire ridge was a promontory enclosed by the Aegean Sea. Geopolitically it was part of Ionia with Priene placed on the coast on the south flank of the mountain and Miletus on the coast opposite to the south across the deep embayment into which the Maeander River drained. Somewhat further north was Ephesus. The ruins of the first two Ionian cities mentioned with their harbor facilities remain but today are several miles inland overlooking instead a rich agricultural plain and delta parkland created by deposition of sediments from the river, which continues to form the geological feature named after it, maeanders. The end of the former bay remains as a lake, Çamiçi Gölü . Samsun Daği does retain a promontory. The entire ridge was made into a national park of 109.85 square kilometres, Dilek Yarimadisi Milli Parki in 1966, which is in part accessible to the public. The remainder is a military reservation. The parks isolation has encouraged the return of the native ecology, which is 60% maquis. It is a refuge for species that formerly were more abundant in the region.
