Top Attractions in Nusa Tenggara Timur

Rinca

Rinca, also known as Rincah and Rindja, is a small island near Komodo island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, within the West Manggarai Regency. It is part of Komodo National Park. The island is famous for komodo dragons, giant lizards that can measure up to 3 metres long. Rinca is also populated with many other species such as wild pigs, buffalos and many birds. Being less known and less visited than Komodo, it is a good place to see the komodo dragon in its natural environment with fewer people to disturb them. Day trips can be arranged from Labuan Bajo on Flores by small boat at the park headquarters. The islands area is 198 square kilometres . Living conditions for local people on the island are often difficult. Education facilities, for example, are quite limited for children. Some non-government organisations help with the provision of books for children on Rinca. Local people must also take some care to avoid komodo dragons because komodos in the area occasionally attack and kill humans.

Kelimutu National Park

Kelimutu National Park is located on the island of Flores, Indonesia. It consists of a region with hills and mountains, with Mount Kelibara as its highest peak. Mount Kelimutu, which has the three coloured lakes, is also located in this national park. This natural attraction is a destination for tourists. Some endagered plant species are protected in this national park, such as: Toona spp., Anthocephalus cadamba, Canarium spp., Diospyros ferra, Alstonis scholaris, Schleichera oleosa, Casuarina equisetifolia and Anaphalis javanica. Some endangered animals can also be found here, such as: Javan rusa, wild boar sp., red junglefowl, Elanus sp. and drongo sp. . The four endemic mammals in the park include two montane rodents: Bunomys naso and Hainalds rat . In this area, there is also an arboretum, a mini jungle represent flora biodiversity of Kelimutu National Park. The arboterum consists of 78 types of tree plants which are grouped into 36 families. Some of the Kelimutus endemic flora collections are uta onga, turuwara, and arngoni .

Labuan Bajo

Labuan Bajo is a fishing town located at the western end of Flores in the Nusa Tenggara region of east Indonesia. Once a small fishing village, Labuan Bajo (also spelled Labuhanbajo and Labuanbajo) in Flores is now a busy bustling center of tourism. It is the launching point for trips to Komodo Island and Rinca Island, home to the famous Komodo dragons. Nearby Kanawa and Seraya Islands are a great opportunity to do some diving and snorkeling and every evening at Kalong Island thousands of flying fox bats put on an amazing display. Within a few hours of Labuan Bajo can be found several waterfalls, trekking and many diverse beaches. The town is quite small and can easily be traversed on foot (in 10–15 minutes). There are various interesting churches and a mosque. Ojeks (3,000-5,000 Rp) and bemos pass every 5 minutes if you get tired of walking. You can rent a motorcycle for 75,000 Rp. per day. There are now 4 working ATM's in the town and the road is paved. Komodo Airport is located just 2 km from the center of Labuan Bajo and has 4-6 daily flights arriving from Bali. The port has daily ferry departures to Bima and weekly or bi-weekly departures to Denpasar and Sulawesi. The local economy in the town is centered around the ferry port and tourism, local shops and restaurants, and the diving trade. Most of the foreign tourists are European, many from Italy, Australia and the United Kingdom. The wider area produces fish and palm oil; there is also a large amount of subsistence agriculture in the villages in the region where living standards are still low. Levels of poverty in the rural areas are high. The National and Regional Governments have both made 2012 a year to promote the regional tourism around Labuan Bajo and the nearby Komodo National Park with a 6 month long festival from July until December 2012.

Komodo Airport

Komodo Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Komodo) (IATA: LBJ, ICAO: WATO) is an airport near the town of Labuan Bajo on the island of Flores in the East Nusa Tenggara province in Indonesia. The airport's name comes from Labuan Bajo's status as a departure point for tours to the nearby Komodo National Park, home of the Komodo dragon. It was formerly known as Mutiara II Airport, not to be confused with Mutiara Airport located near the city of Palu in Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province. On September 2013 the first Boeing 737-800 landed and took off successfully. On 27 December 2015, President Joko Widodo inaugurated new terminal of Komodo Airport. The new terminal will be able to improve passenger services from the previous 150 thousand passengers per year to 1.5 million passengers per year are expected to increase the number of tourists coming to the island of Flores and its surroundings.

David Constantijn Saudale Airport

David Constantijn Saudale Airport (IATA: RTI, ICAO: WATR), formerly known as Lekunik Airport, is an airport located in Rote Ndao Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It serves Ba'a, the capital city of Rote Ndao Regency as well as the largest town in Rote Island. The airport currently serves as one of the main point of entry to Rote Island. Currently, the airport has runway length of 1650 m × 30 m with a taxiway of 75 m × 17 m and aprons measuring 120 m × 85 m. The airport currently can only accommodate small aircraft such as the ATR-72. In addition, the airport also has a 1,170 square meter passenger terminal and an operational building consisting of office buildings, NDB flight navigation building, workshop building, ATC tower, PKP-PK building and PH building. Wings Air is currently the only airline serving the airport, operating 2 daily flights to and from Kupang. In the next few years, the airport will be developed again. The total land required for airport development is 64.60 hectares. Existing land currently only amounts to 51.40 hectares, so there are still 13.20 hectares that have not been cleared by the local government. The plan of this land will be used as a terminal parking and access road. To support the development of the airport, in 2018 the government has budgeted the cost of Rp. 49,160,428,000 to be used for runway smoothing, terminal interior renovation, drainage development, operational building construction, road upgrading and so on.
