Wurstelprater

The Wurstelprater is an amusement park and section of the Wiener Prater in the second district of Vienna, Leopoldstadt. This institution dates back to the time of the Austrian Empire, when Emperor Josef II. made the Prater open to public in 1766. Soon the first snack bars, stalls and bowling alleys opened up on the grounds and the Wurstelprater was born. The best-known attraction is the Wiener Riesenrad, a Ferris wheel. The park also features various rides, bumper cars, carousels, roller coasters, shooting galleries, ghost trains, a Madame Tussauds wax works cabinet and much more. Apart from the rides, the park features various famous traditional Viennese restaurants and souvenir shops. The mascot for the park is Calafati, a 9 m-tall sculpture of a Chinese man, which stands near the Wiener Riesenrad. The park is open from 10:00 am to 1:00 am daily in its season, which runs from March 15 to October 31. Some attractions, as well as the food stands and restaurants, are open throughout the year. There is no entrance fee to get into the park; instead, each attraction charges its own fee, the attractions being individual businesses mostly owned by local families. During the advent season, a small Christmas Market can be found on Riesenradplatz, right beside the Wiener Riesenrad Ferris Wheel at the Wurstelprater entrance. This Wintermarkt is open from mid-November till beginning of January and features traditional Christmas gifts as well as seasonal food and beverages. The Wurstelprater is located in the Wiener Prater and can be conveniently reached by public transport as well as by car .

Mexikoplatz

Mexikoplatz is a square in the Austrian capital Vienna. It is located in the citys 2nd district, Leopoldstadt, near the banks of the Danube, on the southwestern end of the Reichsbrücke, which links Leopoldstadt with Donaustadt, the 22nd district of Vienna. The square was named Mexikoplatz in 1956, to honour the support Mexico gave to Austria in 1938, when it was the only country to protest the Anschluss of Austria by Nazi Germany. Previously it was named "Erzherzog-Karl-Platz", after Archduke Charles of Austria, from 1884 to 1919 and from 1934 to 1956, respectively. From 1919 to 1934, it was called Volkswehrplatz . A church named St Francis of Assisi Church is located in the southeastern part of the square. It was consecrated in 1898, in celebration of the Golden Crown Jubilee of Emperor Francis Joseph.

Augarten

The Augarten is a public park of 52.2 hectares situated in the Leopoldstadt, the second district of Vienna, Austria. It contains the citys oldest Baroque park. In the north-west and north-east it borders on the 20th district, Brigittenau, in the north-east also on the former Nordwestbahnhof, from where the North Western Railway made its way to Bohemia, while to the south it faces the so-called Karmeliterviertel, the historical Jewish quarter, followed by the Leopoldstadt. Until 1870, the areas north and east of the Augarten were floodlands mostly uninhabited. The park is designed in the French Baroque style with elaborate flower gardens and impressive shady avenues of chestnut, lime, ash, and maple. Like most fenced public parks and gardens in Vienna it is open only in the daytime: the parks five gates close at sunset . The Augarten hosts a variety of facilities such as the Wiener Sängerknaben in the Palais Augarten, the Augarten Porzellanmanufaktur, the Augarten Contemporary, the Filmarchiv Austria, a retirement home, a Jewish academic campus, a paddling pool for children and sports fields. Significant testimonials to the Third Reich are two high anti-aircraft bunkers . There are two places in the park where meals or snacks may be had, the Bunkerei and on the premises of the Filmarchiv, and in addition two catering establishments, one of them in the Atelier Augarten. The Baroque park, the palace and the remaining part of the original park wall, dating from the early 18th century, are since 2000 listed as historic monuments.

Prater Liliputbahn

The Prater Liliputbahn is a 381 mm gauge light railway in Vienna, Austria. Opened in 1928, and extended in 1933, the railway operates primarily as a tourist attraction, but also providing transport links around the wider area of the Prater park, the amusement park , and the sports stadium. Although a year-round service was provided for many years, it is now more common for the railway to close during the months of December, January, and February. Originally steam-operated, the railway now uses a mixture of steam and diesel motive power. The railway can be reached by bus, tram, or metro from central Vienna, followed by a short walk, but following the extension of tram line 1, there is now a direct interchange with the Vienna tram network at the railway's Rotunda Station.

Lusthaus

The Lusthaus is a historic building in Prater park in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna, Austria. It is located at the southeastern end of Prater Avenue, near the Freudenau racecourse. First mentioned in 1560 as Casa Verde, the green summer house served as a hunting lodge in Vienna's Prater, which was then a hunting ground. It was built in 1538, at the location where Prater Avenue met the Danube Canal. The Lusthaus was on the water until 1834, when the Danube Canal was moved. After the Prater was opened to the public in 1766, the summer house was rebuilt from 1781 to 1783. It served as the location for large celebrations and festivities, such as the imperial celebrations to mark the first anniversary of the Battle of Leipzig, in which Napoleon was defeated. In the 19th century, the Lusthaus, as well as the entire Prater, was a popular meeting place for the nobility and bourgeoisie. During the First World War, the military bridge guard tasked with protecting the Danube bridge from sabotage was stationed in the summer house. In the inter-war period marked by economic instability and poverty, the composition of its patrons shifted; the Lusthaus then served as a bar with dance and music. During the Second World War, the Lusthaus was almost completely destroyed by bombings in 1944 and 1945. However, by 1948, a decision was taken to rebuild the building, and the city of Vienna earmarked a sum of 350,000 shillings for its repair. During reconstruction, the building was restored to its 18th century shape. In October 1949, the Lusthaus was reopened. Today, the Lusthaus houses a coffeehouse and a restaurant.

Carltheater

The Carltheater was a theatre in Vienna. It was in the suburbs in Leopoldstadt at Praterstraße 31 . It was the successor to the Leopoldstädter Theater. After a series of financial difficulties, that theater had been sold in 1838 to the director, Carl Carl, who continued to run it in parallel to his Theater an der Wien until 1845. Two years later, the building was partially demolished and rebuilt following the plans of architects August Sicard von Sicardsburg and Eduard van der Nüll, who would later design the Vienna State Opera. The theatre was opened under the name Carltheater in the same year, 1847. Many Alt-Wiener Volkstheater pieces by Johann Nepomuk Nestroy premiered here; between 1854 and 1860, Nestroy was the director of the theatre. In subsequent years, many well-known Viennese playwrights wrote pieces for the Carltheater and reinforced its reputation as the favoured opera house for Viennese folk-pieces and operettas. After a rapid changeover of directors in the 20th century, the theatre became unprofitable, and was finally closed in 1929. In 1944, the auditorium of the theatre was almost entirely destroyed in a bomb attack. The artistically valuable facade was, however, still remarkably intact after the war. In 1951 it was demolished, with neighbouring building which had not been damaged in the war. Nowadays, the site is host to the "Galaxy"-building. A few years ago there was a plaque in Praterstraße, marking the former location of the theatre, but this is gone too now.

Pazmanitentempel

The Pazmanitentempel, also known as the Synagogue in der Leopoldstadt, Pazmanitengasse 6, was a large synagogue in Vienna's second district Leopoldstadt. It was designed and constructed by the architect Ignaz Reiser and dedicated on 28 September 1913. The building was financed by Adolf Schramek who signed the contract with the builder in 1910. Originally from Leipnik, Moravia, Schramek became one of Vienna's most successful coal merchants. The Pazmaniten synagogue was, therefore, not built by the Kultusgemeinde but by a temple club Am Volkert, or Aeschel Awrachom of which Schramek was the president. The information about Adolf Schramek is found in "Living in the shadow of Freud" by Sophie Freud and Ernestine Druker Freud, published in 2007. There is also information about him by one of his sons, Oskar Schramek, in Hugo Gold's chapter "Wiener Familien" in "Jews and Jewish Communities of Moravia" . Plans and photographs of the virtual reconstruction of the synagogue are illustrated in the book "The Destroyed Synagogues of Vienna" by Martens and Peter. The synagogue, once described as the most beautiful in Vienna, was destroyed during the Nazi pogroms of the Reichskristallnacht after the Anschluss of Austria to Nazi Germany in 1938.

Schiffschul

Khal Adas Yisroel, usually referred to as the Schiff Shul, was the main Orthodox synagogue in Vienna prior to the Holocaust. The synagogue no longer exists since it was destroyed by the Nazis on Kristallnacht. A building that was adjacent to the Schiffshul and was part of its complex remains. A small shul currently exists in this building that is called Bet Hamidrasch Khal Chassidim and is led by Rabbi Avraham Yona Schwartz. The upper level of the building has been functioning as a yeshiva since the 1940s and is headed by Rabbi Michoel Pressburger. It also serves as temporary spiritual refuge to thousands of Jewish refugees from Iran who have transited through Vienna over the past 30 years. There is a memorial plaque at this site that states "This Jewish place of worship was destroyed by the Nazis in the pogrom of November 1938." The Synagogue was located on Grosse Schiffgasse 8 in the second district of Vienna known as Leopoldstadt.
