Izmaylovskaya

Izmaylovskaya (Russian: Измайловская) is a Moscow Metro station on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line. It is one of the few surface level stations of the system. Moscow's harsh winters make above-ground stations impractical, but the design nonetheless enjoyed brief popularity between 1958 and 1966 because of the low construction costs. Izmaylovskaya was built in 1961 to replace the old Pervomayskaya station, which had been in use since 1954. The design of the station features an elevated vestibule, reached from the street via two flights of steps, which sits on top of the ground-level platform. The platform is relatively spartan, with a canopy providing some protection from the elements and pillars faced with white marble. The architect was Ivan Taranov. The station has a direct entrance to one of Moscow's largest parks, Izmaylovsky Park.

Partizanskaya

Partizanskaya (Russian: Партизанская, IPA: [pərtʲɪˈzanskəjə]), known until 2005 as Izmailovsky Park (Измайловский парк), is a station on the Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line of the Moscow Metro. It was built during World War II (it opened in 1944) and is dedicated to the Soviet partisans who resisted the Nazis. The name was changed on the 60th anniversary of Soviet victory to better reflect the theme of the station. The station's design was the work of architect Vilenskiy. Partizanskaya is an unusual three-track layout with two island platforms. The centre track was built to handle crowds from a nearby stadium that was planned but never built because of the war. The centre track is still used during peak hours and for the trains heading to the Izmailovo depot. There is one row of pillars per platform. Both the walls and pillars of the station are faced with white marble and decorated with bas-reliefs honouring the partisans. The two pillars closest to the exit stairs are adorned with statues: Zoya Kosmodemyanskaya on the left and Matvey Kuzmin on the right. The circular ceiling niche at the foot of the stairs originally contained a fresco by A.D. Goncharov, though this has since been painted over. At the top of the stairs is a sculptural group by Matvey Manizer entitled "Partisans" and bearing the inscription "To partisans and partisan glory!". Station's original name was "Izmailovsky park kul'tury i otdyha imeni Stalina" (English: Stalin Ismailovsky Park of Culture and Leisure). It was changed to "Izmailovskaya" in 1948. In 1961, new station, named "Izmailovsky Park" at the time of its opening, was introduced. And in 1963, names of stations "Izmailovskaya" and "Izmailovsky Park" were switched, reason being which station was closer to the actual park's main entrance. The 2005's rename to "Partizanskaya" has been mentioned in the open letter of a resigning Moscow's toponymy commission member, as one of a number of then-recent renames with political causes rather than the historical toponymy upholding ones.

Izmaylovo Estate

Izmaylovo Estate was a country residence of the House of Romanov built in the reign of Alexis I of Russia. Originally located 7 kilometres east of Moscows city limits, it became part of the expanding city in the 20th century. Its territory spanned 10 to 15 square kilometres of the Serebryanka river valley and corresponds, roughly, to present-day Izmaylovo Forest, Terletsky Forest and the Cherkizovo market territories between the inner ring of the Moscow Railroad and the MKAD beltway. The estate briefly flourished under Tsar Alexis and his daughter Sophia Alekseyevna, being the center of a large estate park with model farms, workshops and hunting reserves. The heart of the estate, the Izmailovo Court of Tsar Alexis, was a wooden palace built on an artificial island a hill surrounded by man-made ponds. The present-day Court retains two sets of palace gates, a cathedral and a barbican tower built in the 1670s-1680s. Other extant structures of the Court were built by Konstantin Thon and Mikhail Bykovsky in 1839–1859, when the island was converted into an almshouse, and in the 1970s. The present-day Court is a freely accessible open-air museum.

2006 Moscow market bombing

The 2006 Moscow market bombing occurred on August 21, 2006, when a self-made bomb of the power of more than 1 kg of TNT exploded at Moscow's Cherkizovsky Market frequented by foreign merchants. In 2008, eight members of the racialist organization The Saviour were sentenced for their roles in the attack. Many traders at the market are from Asia and the Caucasus. As of October 3, 2006, 13 persons were confirmed dead: six citizens of Tajikistan, three citizens of Uzbekistan, two citizens of Russia, a woman from Belarus, and a man who was a Chinese citizen. Eight people died on the scene, two in the hospital on the same day as the bombing, and three at a later date. The latest person to die of the bombing was a man who was a citizen of Tajikistan who died on September 28, 2006, in a hospital. Two ethnic Russian suspects were arrested, and the general prosecutor of Moscow Yuri Syomin charged them of a racially motivated murder. The prosecutor's office officially indicted three university students, Oleg Kostyrev, Ilya Tikhomirov and Valeri Zhukovtsev on a racially motivated murder charge on August 22. The police investigation was finished on August 7, 2007. According to the investigation, Kostyrev, Tikhomirov and Zhukovtsev were members of the nationalistic club The Saviour. The leader of the club, Nikolai Korolev , and two more club members, Sergei Klimuk and a police academy student Nikita Senyukov, were co-indicted with Kostyrev, Tikhomirov and Zhukovtsev on the charges of murder, terrorism, organizing a criminal gang and illegal production and storage of explosives. Senyukov was also indicted for murder of an Armenian student on a subway. Allegedly, the conspirators have performed numerous explosions before, without any victims, blowing up Azerbaijani-owned stores, an Armenian refugee hostel and an office of a Georgian-born fortune teller. On May 15, 2008, after a guilty verdict in the jury trial, Korolev, Klimuk, Tikhomirov and Kostyrev received a sentence of life imprisonment. Zhukovtsev received 20 years in prison, Senyukov 13 years and two students who actually delivered the bomb to the market, Dmitri Fedoseyenkov and Nikolai Kachalov only 2 years (the court decided they were not a part of the "criminal enterprise"). Later the same month, the appeal was filed with the Supreme Court by the convicted. Fedoseyenkov and Kachalov were released from prison on March 20, 2009 after serving their sentence. Other convict's appeals were still underway as of that time. In August 2010, it was announced that Korolev and Kostyrev are also suspects in a murder of a Chinese citizen by stabbing in Moscow on May 19, 2006.
