Burgos Cathedral

Burgos Cathedral is a Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral in Burgos, Spain. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is famous for its vast size and unique architecture. Its construction began in 1221 and it was in use as a church nine years later but work continued off and on until 1567. It was primarily built in the French Gothic style, although Renaissance style works were added in the 15th and 16th centuries. The cathedral was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on October 31, 1984. It is the only Spanish cathedral that has this distinction independently, without being joined to the historic center of a city or in union with other buildings, as in Seville. Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas

The Abbey of Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas is a monastery of Cistercian nuns located approximately 1.5 km west of the city of Burgos in Spain. The word huelgas, which usually refers to "labor strikes" in modern Spanish, refers in this case to land which had been left fallow. Historically, the monastery has been the site of many weddings of royal families, both foreign and Spanish, including that of Edward I of England to Eleanor of Castile in 1254, for example. The defensive tower of the Abbey is also the birthplace of King Peter I of Castile.

Castle of Burgos

The Castle of Burgos was a castle and alcázar, located in the city of Burgos, in the hill of San Miguel to 75 m above the city and to 981 meters above the sea. This hill was the subject of archaeological surveys by General Centeno in the years 1925 and 1926 trying to find Napoleonic military files when the French in their retreat blew up the fortress. According to this general the origin of the castle attributes to the Visigoths, and its oldest parts, to the Romans. As was increasing importance of the defensive emplacement, it gave way to a castle and more complex defensive elements. During the French occupation, the June 15, 1813, the French army decided to leave the Castle of Burgos, and they destroyed it with explosives. The explosion resulted in the almost total destruction of all the castle grounds. At present remains its ruins.

Museum of Human Evolution

The Museum of Human Evolution is a museum on the subject of human evolution situated on the south bank of the river Arlanzón, in the Spanish city of Burgos. It is located roughly 10 miles west from the Sierra de Atapuerca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and location of some of the most important human fossil finds in the world. The museum was opened on July 13, 2010, and had received 148,045 visitors as of December 31, 2010, making it the most visited museum in Castile and León. It forms the centerpiece of the so-called "Complejo de la Evolución Humana" comprising a convention centre, the CENIEH research institution and the museum itself .

San Nicolás de Bari

Since the Church of San Esteban was turned into a museum, it has served as the seat of the parish of San Esteban. The church was built in 1408, replacing another Romanesque temple. It contains notable examples of fifteenth century Castilian Renaissance art by Simón de Colonia and his son Francisco. Also of great interest are the Gothic tombs, and the Renaissance arc by María Sáez de Oña and Fernando de Mena. The church became a Bien de Interés Cultural listed building on 26 January 1917.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of Burgos is a Catholic church dedicated to the Virgin Mary located in the Spanish city of Burgos. Its official name is Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica Metropolitana de Santa María de Burgos. Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic patterns . Had major changes in the 15th and 16th centuries: the spiers of the main facade, the Chapel of the Constable and dome of the cruise, elements of the advanced Gothic which give the temple its unmistakable profile. The last works of importance (the Sacristy or the Chapel of Saint Thecla) already belong to 18th century, century in which were also modified the Gothic portals of the main facade. The style of the cathedral is the Gothic, although it has, in its interior, several decorative Renaissance and Baroque elements. The construction and renovations were made with limestone extracted from the quarrys of the nearby town of Hontoria de la Cantera. In the cathedral are preserved works of extraordinary artists, such as architects and sculptors of the Colonia family (Juan, Simón and Francisco), the architect Juan de Vallejo, sculptors Gil de Siloé, Felipe Bigarny, Rodrigo de la Haya, Martín de la Haya, Juan de Ancheta and Juan Pascual de Mena, the sculptor and architect Diego de Siloé, the fencer Cristóbal de Andino, the glazier Arnao de Flandes or painters Alonso de Sedano, Mateo Cerezo, Sebastiano del Piombo or Juan Ricci, among others. The design of the main facade is related to the purest French Gothic style of the great cathedrals of Paris and Reims, while the interior elevation as a reference to Bourges Cathedral. It consists of three bodies topped by two lateral square towers. The squelettes of Germanic influence were added in the 15th century and are the work of Juan de Colonia. In the outside are outstanding also covers del Sarmental and la Coronería, 13th century Gothics, and the cover de la Pellejería of 16th century Plateresques-Renaissance influences. There are numerous architectural, sculptural and pictorial treasures inside. Highlights include: The Gothic-Plateresque dome, raised by Juan de Colonia in the 15th century. The Chapel del Constable, of Isabelline Gothic style, which worked the Colonia family, Diego de Siloé and Felipe Bigarny. The Spanish-Flemish Gothic altarpiece by Gil de Siloé for the Chapel of Saint Anne. The stalls of the choir Renaissance Plateresque work by Bigarny. The late Gothic reliefs of the girola by Bigarny. Numerous Gothic and Renaissance tombs. The Renaissance Golden staircase by Diego de Siloé. The Santísimo Cristo de Burgos, image of great devotional tradition. The tomb of El Cid and his wife Doña Jimena, his letter of Down payment and his chest. The Papamoscas, articulated statue that opens his mouth to give the chiming of the hours. The cathedral was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on October 31, 1984. It is the only Spanish cathedral that has this distinction independently, without being joined to the historic center of a city (as in Salamanca, Santiago de Compostela, Ávila, Córdoba, Toledo, Alcalá de Henares or Cuenca) or in union with other buildings, as in Seville. It is similar in design to Brussels Cathedral.

Convento de Santa Clara

The Iglesia del Carmen de Burgos is a nun's convent in Burgos, Castile and León, Spain. It is situated on the corner of Calle de Covarrubias, del Progreso and Santa Clara. It is a Gothic edifice built mostly in the thirteenth century, at the time of its founding, when it was part of the Monasterio de Santa María la Real de Las Huelgas. It dates to 1234.

Convento de Santa Dorotea

The Convento de Santa Dorotea is an Augustinian nun's convent in Burgos, Castile and León, Spain. It is a Gothic construction, and dates back to 1387, when Dorotea Rodriguez Valderrama, along with other devout women formed a nun's community at the old church of Santa Maria la Blanca. The community adopted the rule of St. Augustine in 1429 with the support of Bishop Pablo de Santamaría. In 1457 they moved to the church of San Andrés, until in 1470 they settled in the current location in the barrio of San Pedro y San Felices. Among the many benefactors who favored the monastery was King John II of Castile. Tombs of note include those of Alonso de Ortega , and Bishop Juan de Ortega, the work of Nicholas de Vergara, 1516.

La Merced

Iglesia de San Lorenzo el Real is a Baroque church in Burgos, Spain. It is located on Calle Almirante Bonifaz. San Lorenzo was originally a Jesuit church, built between 1684 and 1694 to replace an earlier building of more modest proportions. The work was financed and sponsored by Francisca de San Vítores and erected by Bernabé de Hazas and Francisco del Pontón. After the expulsion of the Jesuits in the late eighteenth century, the church became a parish church. Since its creation in 1945, the church has been the seat of the Brotherhood of Coronación de Espinas y de Cristo Rey.

Siege of Burgos

At the Siege of Burgos, from 19 September to 21 October 1812, the Anglo-Portuguese Army led by General Arthur Wellesley, Marquess of Wellington tried to capture the castle of Burgos from its French garrison under the command of General of Brigade Jean-Louis Dubreton. The French repulsed every attempt to seize the fortress, resulting in one of Wellington's rare withdrawals, as he went on to defeat the army sent to flank him at the Lines of Torres Vedras, pursued them and then returned to complete the siege of Burgos and capture the city. The siege took place during the Peninsular War, part of the Napoleonic Wars. Burgos is located about 210 kilometres north of Madrid. After crushing Marshal Auguste Marmont's French army at the Battle of Salamanca in July 1812, Wellington exploited his great victory by advancing on Madrid. King Joseph Bonaparte and Marshal Jean-Baptiste Jourdan retreated to Valencia where they sought refuge with Marshal Louis Gabriel Suchet. The magnitude of Wellington's triumph also compelled Marshal Nicolas Soult to evacuate Andalucia in the south and withdraw to Valencia. The combined armies of Soult and Joseph soon posed a serious menace to Wellington's grasp on Madrid. The recently defeated French army in the north also built up its strength. Wellington made plans to counter the southern French threat while hoping to quickly capture the strategically important Burgos position, which was an important French supply base. Instead, Dubreton led a masterful defense, thwarting Wellington's assaults time after time. The British commander's hopes were blasted when his attempts to contain the twin French counteroffensives failed. With large French relief armies approaching Burgos from the northeast and Madrid from the southeast, the British commander withdrew to the west, abandoning large areas of Spain that had been recently liberated. That fall the French lost an opportunity to defeat Wellington's army. Nevertheless, during the withdrawal to Portugal the Anglo-Portuguese army lost many men to pursuing French cavalry and starvation.

Battle of Burgos

The Battle of Burgos, also known as Battle of Gamonal, was fought on November 10, 1808, during the Peninsular War in the village of Gamonal , now a district of Burgos, Spain. Nowadays it's part of Burgospowerful French army under Marshal Bessières overwhelmed and destroyed the outnumbered Spanish troops under General Belveder, opening central Spain to invasion. Spanish history remembers this battle for the vain gallantry of the Guard and Walloon regiments under Vicente Genaro de Quesada. Forming a rearguard for the shattered Spanish lines, these troops repelled repeated charges by General Lasalle's. The cost was high for the Spaniards, with only 74 of the 307 men in the rearguard surviving. It is said that Bessières personally returned Quesada's sword and had his wounds treated in the French field hospital. These acts of chivalry became increasingly rare as the Peninsular War dragged on.

The church is famous in history and literature for being the site where Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar at the behest of the Castilian Cortes, forced Alfonso VI to swear an oath that he was not an accomplice in the death of his brother, Sancho while he was besieging Zamora. Es el de la jura de Santa Gadea is the most notable Spanish medieval romance about this event. The church today is not the same as it was at the time of the swearing of the famous oath, but the place where the event took place is nevertheless marked by an inscription on a plate, positioned on the outside wall beside the church door.

San Cosme y San Damián

Iglesia de San Cosme y San Damián is a Catholic parish church in Burgos, Spain, on the left bank of the Arlanzón River. It was built in the sixteenth century with a combination of the Late Gothic and Renaissance styles. It was a burial place of featured artists of the time. The porch on the north side was designed by Juan de Vallejo in 1552, with a triumphal arch with medallions of John the Baptist and John the Evangelist in the spandrels and fine fluted columns. The massive tower of the church, of the classicist baroque style, was added in 1621 by Gabriel de Cotero.

The Iglesia del Carmen de Burgos is a Catholic parish church built in Burgos, Castile and León, Spain. It is a modern building, built in 1966-1968, replacing a demolished baroque building. It is located at the intersection of Paseo del Empecinado with Calle del Carmen, between the Arlanzón River and the old railway. The church was inaugurated on 7 July 1968.
