National Museum of Iceland

The National Museum of Iceland was established on 24 February 1863, with Jón Árnason the first curator of the Icelandic collection, previously kept in Danish museums. The second curator, Sigurður Guðmundsson, advocated the creation of an antiquarian collection, and the museum was called the Antiquarian Collection until 1911. Before settling at its present location, at Suðurgata 41, 101 Reykjavík, in 1950, it was housed in various Reykjavík attics, finally for forty years in the attic of the National Library building on Hverfisgata . A key object in the permanent exhibition is the Valþjófsstaður door, a celebrated carving depicting a version of the Lion-Knight legend where a knight slays a dragon, thus freeing a lion that becomes his companion.

Tjörnin

Tjörnin tnɪn], The Pond) is a prominent small lake in central Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. Most visitors to the city pass along its shore, as it is situated in the city centre next to the Reykjavik City Hall and several museums. Tjörnin means "the lake" or "the pond". Tarn, meaning "mountain lake", is a northern English dialect word derived from the Norse word tjörn and its genitive/plural tjarnar. Bird feeding on the lake shore, a popular pastime, has led to the lake being called "the biggest bread soup in the world" . Tjörnin was the setting for scenes in the 2010 Icelandic movie Gauragangur.

The National Gallery of Iceland is located in Reykjavík, and contains a collection of Icelandic art. The gallery features artwork of famous Icelandic artists and artwork that helps explain the traditional Icelandic culture.

Reykjavík Museum of Photography

Reykjavík Museum of Photography, in downtown Reykjavík, Iceland, preserves about five million photographs by professional and amateur photographers, from around 1870 to the present century. The collection includes studio portraits, and industrial, advertising, press, landscape and family photographs.

Safnahúsið

Safnahúsið , formerly Þjóðmenningarhúsið, is an exhibition space in Reykjavík, Iceland, which houses an exhibition, Points of View, drawn from various national museums and other cultural institutions. It has been part of the National Museum of Iceland since 2013. The director is Markús Þór Andrésson. The building, Hverfisgata 15, was constructed to house the National Library and at one time also housed a number of other museums.

Sundhöllin

Sundhöllin, Baronsstigur, Reykjavik is the oldest public baths in Iceland. They were designed by the noted architect Guðjón Samúelsson and opened in 1937. The buildings exterior is a minimialist white that is almost Art Deco in style with tall narrow rectangular windows. While inside arches on the south side of the pool and the tiled changing rooms are other notable features. The main pool is 25 metres long by 10 metres wide and the pool runs from 0.9 to 4 metres. There are also hot tubs and Guðjóns Hallgrímskirkja can be seen from the sundeck.

Hádegismóar Temple

Hádegismóar Temple is a planned Buddhist temple, scheduled to be built in Reykjavík, Iceland. It will be funded by foreign sponsors and eventually house the Buddhist Association of Iceland, the country's largest Buddhist group. The temple will be located by Lake Rauðavatn in suburban Reykjavík and will consist of a stupa and two other structures. When completed, it will be the northernmost Buddhist temple in the world, only about 4 kilometres further north than its counterpart in Fredrika, Sweden.

Volcano House

Volcano House is a Geology exhibition in Reykjavík, Iceland, located at Tryggvagata 11. The exhibition gives a brief overview of Iceland’s geological history and volcanic systems. Every hour the Volcano House shows two documentaries, one about the volcanic eruption of Eyjafjallajökull in 2010 and one about the volcanic eruption in the Westman Islands in 1973. Volcano House also includes a coffee shop and a gift shop. Opening hours are from 9.00 22.00 every day of the week.

Reykjavík 871±2

Reykjavík 871±2 is an exhibition on the settlement of Reykjavík, Iceland, created by the Reykjavik City Museum . The exhibition is based on the archaeological excavation of the ruin of one of the first houses in Iceland and findings from other excavations in the city centre. The exhibition is located in 101 Reykjavík, on Aðalstræti 16, on the corner of Aðalstræti and Suðurgata. The focus of the exhibition is the remains of a hall from the Settlement Age which was excavated in 2001. The hall was inhabited from c. 930–1000. North of the hall are two pieces of turf, remnants of a wall which was clearly built before 871±2, hence the name of the exhibition. Such precise data dating is possible because a major volcanic eruption from the Torfajökull area spread tephra across the region and this can be dated via glacial ice in Greenland. The hall is among the oldest human-made structures so far found in Iceland. Also on display are objects from the Viking Age found in central Reykjavík and the island of Viðey. The exhibition is held by the City of Reykjavík and run by the Reykjavík City Museum. The exhibition is open daily 10-17.

Hallgrímskirkja

Hallgrímskirkja is a Lutheran parish church in Reykjavík, Iceland. At 73 metres, it is the largest church in Iceland and the sixth tallest architectural structure in Iceland after Longwave radio mast Hellissandur, the radio masts of the US Navy at Grindavík, Eiðar longwave transmitter and Smáratorg tower. The church is named after the Icelandic poet and clergyman Hallgrímur Pétursson, author of the Passion Hymns. State Architect Guðjón Samúelssons design of the church was commissioned in 1937. He is said to have designed it to resemble the basalt lava flows of Icelands landscape. It took 38 years to build the church. Construction work began in 1945 and ended in 1986. The landmark tower being completed long before the churchs actual completion. The crypt beneath the choir was consecrated in 1948, the steeple and wings were completed in 1974, and the nave was consecrated in 1986. Situated in the centre of Reykjavík, it is one of the citys best-known landmarks and is visible throughout the city. It is 1676 Sqm. It is similar in style to the expressionist architecture of Grundtvigs Church of Copenhagen, Denmark, completed in 1940. The church houses a large pipe organ by the German organ builder Johannes Klais of Bonn. It has mechanical action, four manuals and pedal, 102 ranks, 72 stops and 5275 pipes. It is 15 metres tall and weighs 25 tons. Its construction was finished in December 1992. It has been recorded by Christopher Herrick in his Organ Fireworks VII CD and by Mattias Wager on his CD Live at Vatnajökull. The church is also used as an observation tower. An observer can take a lift up to the viewing deck and view Reykjavík and the surrounding mountains. The statue of explorer Leif Eriksson by Alexander Stirling Calder in front of the church predates its construction. It was a gift from the United States in honor of the 1930 Alþingi Millennial Festival, commemorating the 1000th anniversary of Icelands parliament at Þingvellir in 930 AD. In 2008, the church underwent a major restoration of the main tower, and was covered in scaffolding. In late 2009, restoration was completed and the scaffolding was removed.

Höfði

Höfði is a house in northern Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, built in 1909. Höfði is located at Félagstún. Initially, it was built for the French consul Jean-Paul Brillouin in Iceland and was the exclusive residence of poet and businessman Einar Benediktsson for many years. It is best known as the location for the 1986 Reykjavík Summit meeting of presidents Ronald Reagan of the United States and Mikhail Gorbachev of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. That effectively was a step to the end of the Cold War. Within the building the flags of the United States and the Soviet Union are cross-hung to commemorate the meeting. In the 1940s and 50s, it was home to the British Embassy in Reykjavík. The city of Reykjavík purchased the house in 1958, restored it to its former glory. From that time used it for formal receptions and festive occasions. On 25 September 2009, on the buildings 100th birthday, Höfði was damaged in a fire. All irreplaceable artifacts were saved. In 2015, Einar Benediktssons statue, by Ásmundur Sveinsson, was moved to a spot near Höfði house.

Laugardalshöll

Laugardalshöll is an indoor sporting arena located in Reykjavík, Iceland. The capacity of the arena is 5,500 people. It hosts various sporting events, such as handball, basketball, volleyball and athletics, as well as for other events. Aside from sporting events, it is to day the largest concert venue in Iceland, with capacity of 11,000 people in one hall. Aside from sports and music events, it serves as a general purpose hall for all manner of events. Perhaps the most prominent event to be held at Laugardalshöll was the World Chess Championship 1972, often dubbed the "Match of the Century", in which American challenger Bobby Fischer defeated the Russia champion Boris Spassky. Another important event one was the "National Assembly", first step of the constitutional reform process. It gathered 1000 citizens, randomly picked in the national register. Held on November 6, 2010, for only one day, it produced a document listing the main principles of the island nation. From 2007 to 2011, it also hosted CCP Games EVE Online annual Fanfest.

Laugavegur

Laugavegur is the primary commercial artery of downtown Reykjavík, Iceland and one of the oldest shopping streets. The name means "wash road", as it used to lead to the hot springs in Laugardalur where in olden times the women of Reykjavík took their laundry for washing. It was constructed in 1885 as a result of town councils decision. It has experienced economic setbacks in recent years mostly because of the increase in popularity of shopping malls, most notably Kringlan and the recent Smáralind. It still maintains the charm of a historical shopping street and is still home to the more exclusive stores in Iceland. It is also home to many bars, nightclubs and restaurants. On Friday and Saturday nights the street is often filled with people all night long. The Icelandic Phallological Museum is also located on this street.

Kringlan

Kringlan is the largest shopping mall in Reykjavík with over 170 shops, restaurants and services. Built in 1987, it contains everything from a library, theatre and cinema to a liquor store, candy stores and a pub. It has grown over the years, and is thought by many to be the biggest threat for the Reykjavík city centre stores. Kringlan is also competing with another shopping mall, Smáralind in Kópavogur for customers.

Austurvöllur

Austurvöllur is a public square in Reykjavík, Iceland. The square is a popular gathering place for the citizens of Reykjavík, and especially so during good weather due to the prevalence of cafés on Vallarstræti and Pósthússtræti. It has also been a focal point of protests due to the close location to the Parliament of Iceland. The square contains a large statue of Jón Sigurðsson, a leader of Iceland's independence movement. Austurvöllur is surrounded by Vallarstræti, Pósthússtræti, Kirkjustræti and Thorvaldsensstræti. The latter of which is named after Bertel Thorvaldsen, a statue of whom was, for a long period of time, present in the centre of Austurvöllur, now occupied by a statue of Jón Sigurðsson. Located around the perimeter of the square are: the Alþingishúsið , the Domkirkjan (the city's oldest church), the Hotel Borg, as well as numerous cafés, restaurants and bars. In the early 18th century, Austurvöllur was much larger and stretched from Aðalstræti in the west towards the creek in the east, and Aðalstræti in the north towards Tjörn in the south.

Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík

The Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík congregation was established in Reykjavík in the autumn of 1899. It had an initial membership of 600 which soon rose. The foundation of the Free Church did not spring from any doctrinal dispute with the national Lutheran church, but arose from objections to certain aspects of the national church's organisations. The Free church followed the example of churches in Norway and those of Icelandic immigrant communities in North America, in wishing to bring the church closer to the people. The rising population of Reykjavík and the concomitant social changes also contributed. Craftsmen and tradesman were growing classes in the town, and new districts were built, and yet Reykjavík Cathedral was still the only church. Shortly after the new congregation was founded, a suitable site for a new church was chosen at the east of the lake. The church was consecrated on 22 February 1903. Only two years later the church was lengthened, to a design by architect Rögnvaldur Ólafsson. In 1924 the church was enlarged again. A chancel was built of concrete at the eastern end, and various alterations were built on either side of the forechurch, supervised by master builder Guðmundur H. Þorláksson. Fríkirkjan í Reykjavík is a church which is apart from the State Church. It is an independent Lutheran free church of Iceland. It lies in the centre of the Icelandic capital, by the lake Tjörnin.

Heiðmörk

Heiðmörk was proclaimed a municipal conservation area of Reykjavík in 1950. It is located southeast of Elliðavatn, Iceland, and is about 6 miles from the city of Reykjavík. Its name is derived from its namesake in Norway, Hedmark , an area with deep forests. The total area of the conservation area is 3,200 hectares . It is a popular recreational area in Iceland. Heiðmörk is where Reykjavík's water reservoirs and drinking water wells are located. Rauðhólar are a notable natural formation of Heiðmörk, a cluster of red coloured pseudocraters.

Perlan

Perlan is a landmark building in Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland. It is 25.7 metres high. It was originally designed by Ingimundur Sveinsson. Perlan is situated on the hill Öskjuhlíð where there had been hot water storage tanks for decades. In 1991 the tanks were updated and a hemispherical structure placed on top. This project was largely done at the behest of Davíð Oddsson, during his time as mayor of Reykjavík.

Vatnsmýrin Nature Reserve

The Vatnsmýrin Nature Reserve is a protected moorland in Reykjavík, Iceland. The reserve provides a water source for Tjörnin Lake and is a nesting ground for birds. It borders the Nordic House and the University of Iceland. The area within the Reserve including drains and fences, and measures 37,026 square metres . Eighty-three species of vascular plants are documented. Biodiversity has been inhibited due to invasive animals and plants as well as industrial waste.

Víkin

Víkingsvöllur is the home ground of Icelandic football team Víkingur Reykjavik. Víkin seats around 1500 spectators with plenty of space available for bystanders. The sports venue was constructed in 2004 and completed in 2005. It is located in the district of Fossvogur in Reykjavík. The stadium hosted concerts of early Icelandic folk music when it was first opened, despite opposition from local venues that the setting was unsuitable.

Reykjavík Municipal Archives is an independent institution of Reykjavík municipality, the most populous municipality and capital of Iceland. The Reykjavík Municipal Archives collects, records and preserves various records pertaining the operation and history of both public institutions as well as private enterprises and individuals related to Reykjavík. The Reykjavík Municipal Archives contain the personal records collections of former Icelandic prime ministers Ólafur Thors and Bjarni Benediktsson which are to a large extent accessible online. The objective of The Reykjavík Municipal Archives is to supervise on, and survey, records management at various city institutions: offices, schools, agencies, etc., ensure the safe preservation of old records and maintain proper indexing and storage of current records. The National Archives of Iceland supervises Reykjavík Municipal Archives with regard to policy.

Lækjartorg

Lækjartorg is a square in downtown Reykjavík, Iceland. It is located in Kvosin south of Reykjavík Harbor, where Bankastræti, Lækjargata and Austurstræti meet. Reykjavík District Court faces the square.

Vikin Maritime Museum

The Vikin Maritime Museum is a maritime museum in the capital of Iceland, Reykjavík. The museum is located by the old harbour and was established in 2005. There are seven exhibitions at the museum displaying Icelandic maritime history from the early settlements to the late 20th century. An important part of the museum is the Coast Guard and rescue vessel Óðinn . In 2008, the ship was transformed into a museum exhibit about the cod wars in the 1950s and 1970s. The ship also tells about its own history. The museum is named after the Vikin cove where the museum is located. The museum focuses authentic atmosphere of Icelandic fisheries and on the history of fishing in Iceland but displays other temporary exhibitions related to the sea. The name "Vikin" refers to the cove by the museum.

Center for Icelandic Art

The Icelandic Art Center is the platform for Icelandic visual art activities. IAC promotes Icelandic art by connecting the local visual art community with the international art network. IAC enforces national and international collaborations in order to improve opportunities for Icelandic artists in their home country and to increase their visibility abroad. The Icelandic Art Center was founded in 2005 and is located at Lækjargata 3 in Reykjavík.

Ráðhús Reykjavíkur

Ráðhús Reykjavíkur' is situated by the Tjörnin in Reykjavík. It houses the offices of the mayor of Reykjavík, a café and a large 3D map of Iceland. It is sometimes used for art exhibitions. The building was constructed in 1992 following an international competition won by architects Studio Granda.

Nauthólsvík

Nauthólsvík is a small neighbourhood in Reykjavík, the capital city of Iceland, about 900 metres from Perlan. It has a beach with an artificial hot spring. The temperature of the ocean is usually about 12-16 °C during the summer and goes all the way down to about 2 °C in the winter. The area inside the cove is usually a few degrees warmer than the ocean. The temperature of the hot tub is pretty consistent around 38,5 °C with the second hot tub being a lot cooler. The service centre also sells beverages and snacks. Reykjavík University is located in Nauthólsvík in a new building, opened in 2010.

Reykjavik City Theatre

Reykjavík City Theatre is a theatre in Reykjavík. In 1989, after 90 years of performing in a small wooden building in the city centre, the company inaugurated a new theatre complex. The large new building, has four adaptable stages. The main stage seats 560 people, a black box theatre holds 240, a theatre-in-the-round 220, and a café-theatre has room for 120 at full capacity. The RCT employs up to 200 people at any given time. The company also contracts international talents for a selection of projects. All elements of production take place within the theatre itself, which has its own lighting and sound departments, set and props workshops, costume and make-up departments as well as a technical stage crew. The company season runs from September through June each year. The RCT stages 9 to 13 new productions annually, in addition to hosting a variety of collaborations with other theatre companies. Its audience tallies range from 150,000 – 200,000 per annum, making it the most popular theatre in Iceland. The RCT is subsidised by the City of Reykjavík. The company draws on international and domestic works. The RCT promotes a wide range of outside events varying from philosophical debates to rock concerts. The RCT also promotes productions by independent theatre groups. Each year the theatre also hosts international guest performances while exporting progressive Icelandic theatre to festivals and theatres on the international scene. Reykjavík Theatre Company

The Reykjavík Theatre Company was founded in 1897 when two existing companies in Reykjavík combined, performing in the then newly built Iðnó . With Indriði Einarsson as its Director, RTC became the fertile ground in which Icelands professional theatre developed. Einarsson dedication to professional theatre champion, Sigurður Guðmundssons, vision of a permanent National Theatre was key in the evolution of Icelands professional Theatre.

Þverfellshorn

Þverfellshorn is a peak in the Esjan mountains of Capital Region in southwestern Iceland. It is located roughly 15 kilometres by air northeast of Reykjavík. It is one of the most visited peaks in Iceland, attracting hikers for its scenic views. Its elevation range is 820 metres 840 metres . The car park at the foot of the mountain is known as "Mógilsá".
