Top Attractions in Romford

The Chase Nature Reserve

The Chase is a nature reserve in Dagenham in London. Most of it is in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, with a small part in Havering. It is owned by the boroughs, and managed by London Wildlife Trust in conjunction with Barking and Dagenham Ranger Service. The boroughs have designated the sections in their respective boroughs as Local Nature Reserves. The Chase, together with the neighbouring Eastbrookend Country Park, is also designated a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. The River Rom, which is the boundary between the boroughs, runs through the site, with Barking and Dagenham on the west side and Havering on the east. It was formerly a site of gravel extraction, and now has a diverse range of habitats. The River Rom has birds such as kingfishers, and the 190 species of birds recorded include skylarks, little ringed plovers and lapwings. Other animals include water voles, great crested newts, slow worms and badgers. The Black Poplar is Britains rarest native tree, and the site has six of only six hundred female trees. Dry acid grasslands have some unusual species. Some areas are gazed by horses.

The Brewery

The Brewery is a shopping and leisure centre in Romford, in the London Borough of Havering, England. It is located on the site of the former Star Brewery, and it opened in 2001. It is—along with The Liberty and The Mercury—one of the three main shopping centres in Romford. In 2010, a 25% stake in the complex was sold by the Henderson Group to Prudential Property Investment Managers for £44.25m. At the time of the sale, its location in east London, mix of retail and leisure uses, and the Sainsburys anchor store were explained as factors for its sustained success during the late-2000s recession. Leisure uses in the centre include a bowling and amusement arcade unit, a cinema, and a number of restaurants. The Brewery is located within Romfords town centre and is near to Romford railway station. A number of London Buses serve the centre and route 165 terminates within The Brewery car park.

Rise Park

See all Rise Park, Beverley, home of the ancestral Bethells Rise Park is an area of Romford, a district in the London Borough of Havering. It is one of a series of parks which stretch northwards from the railway line at Romford. The southern entrance to Rise Park is just north of the A12 Eastern Avenue, and the northern entrance is on Lower Bedfords Road. It does have a further four other entrances located in Beauly Way, Dee Way, Garry Close, and Isbell Gardens. Rise Park has a low crime rate and has a significant number of bungalows located in the area. There has a been a number of new housing developments in the area, and there are even some private roads it is defined by estate agents as sought after. House prices in the area vary a typical 3 bedroom house sells for an average of £300,000, where as houses in roads such as Wood View Mews and Wallace Way houses can fetch up to £500,000 or more.

Gidea Hall

Gidea Hall was a manor house in Gidea Park, the historic parish and Royal liberty of Havering-atte-Bower, whose former area today is part of the north-eastern extremity of Greater London. The first record of Gidea Hall is in 1250, and in 1466 Sir Thomas Cooke, a Lord Mayor of London, was granted a licence to crenellate, which is a licence for the manor house to be fortified. The manor work started in 1466 with the construction of a moat and other alterations which were not finished until 1568. The main house and two adjacent wings formed three sides of a courtyard with an open colonnade on the fourth side and various outbuildings. Maria de Medici, the mother-in-law of King Charles I stayed at Gidea Hall in 1638 on her way from Harwich to London, although by then the hall was falling into decay. By the time of the Commonwealth the buildings were ruinous, but were not finally demolished until 1720 when a new mansion was built on the site. In 1783 a book entitled An enquiry by experiment into the properties and effects of the medicinal waters in the County of Essex includes an entry for "Gidea Hall water", describing the source as rising on the "bank of the canal in the park of Richard Benyon, Esq". The canal referred to is now the lake in Raphael Park, which was recorded on the 1888 Ordnance Survey map as Blacks Canal after the Black family; a map prepared for Alexander Black in 1807 clearly shows the spring. An investigation into the spring in 1910 recorded that it had "been drained, filled up and turfed about 4 years ago". The later Gidea Hall was of brick. The Gidea Hall estate was purchased in 1897 by Herbert Raphael, and in 1902 he gave 20 acres, including a lake, for use as a public park; a further 55 acres was subsequently purchased and Raphael Park opened in 1904. In 1910 Raphael and two fellow Liberal MPs formed Gidea Park Ltd with the aim of building a garden suburb on the Gidea Hall and Balgores estates, and during the First World War they offered both properties to the Artists Rifles for use as an Officers School. The house was demolished in 1930. The wall, railings and gate from the early 18th century remain and are now Grade II listed structures.

Hare Hall

Hare Hall is a house and grounds located in Gidea Park in the London Borough of Havering, east London. It was built in 1769-70 as a country house for John A. Wallinger and since 1921 has housed the Royal Liberty School. The Palladian mansion was built to designs by James Paine, who included it in his published Plans. The main north front is of five bays, with a rusticated basement storey, above which the two upper storeys are unified by a giant portico and pilasters at the angles. Attached to the south front by short corridors there were pavilions containing service rooms. The principal rooms were on the first floor, and were approached by a central staircase with curved ends and a wrought iron balustrade. The main front was of Portland stone, but the south front was of red brick. In 1896 the house was considerably enlarged on that side by filling in the space between the pavilions. At the stud maintained at Hare Park, Cherimoya, foaled in 1908, was bred by the South African mining entrepreneur and horseman W. Broderick Cloete; after Cloetes dweath in the sinking of the Lusitania, during the First World War Hare Park became Hare Hall Camp and housed the 2nd Battalion of the Artists Rifles.

Barking and Dagenham College

Barking & Dagenham College is a large further education college with approximately 12,500 students (of which 9000 are 19+ and 3,500 are age 16 – 18) located in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham in Dagenham, East London, England. The Acting Principal/CEO is Yvonne Kelly, who has taken over from Cathy Walsh OBE. Cathy joined the College in September 2008. Cathy received her OBE in 2014 Queen's Birthday Honours and it was presented to her by HRH The Prince of Wales. The college offers hundreds of courses from Entry Level to post-graduate. These include BTECs at Level 3 (the College does not offer A-Levels). The degree-level qualifications include HNC/HND, Foundation Degrees, and a post-graduate Masters of Business Administration. Winner of 3 national awards, it is a Gazelle college, and home to the only regional Gazelle STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths) Centre within the M25. Promoting a real work training environment, the college helps student develop employability skills via their Siemens Mechatronic Academy, Commercial hair and beauty salons, The Chef's Hat restaurants, Start-up High Street and The POD (Pitch On Demand). The college trains around 860 apprentices each year (750 Intermediate and Advanced level apprentices, and 110 Higher Level apprentices), making it one of the largest providers of apprenticeship training in London. Working with a range of employer clients including Siemens PLC, Wm Morrisons Supermarkets and North Essex NHS Partnership Trust, Barking & Dagenham College focuses on creating work-ready students. Specialist off-campus training centres include the Motor Vehicle & Motorsport Training Centre, The Broadway Theatre (School for Performing Arts and Technical Theatre), Barking Learning Centre and The Technical Skills Academy (TSA) in Barking. Some courses are offered in partnership with Havering College of Further and Higher Education at the Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence, under the name Thames Gateway College. Some of the college's courses are delivered through the Barking Learning Centre.
