Basilica of Guadalupe

The Basilica of Guadalupe or Santuario de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, is a Roman Catholic church located in the metropolitan area of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. Standing in the neighborhood of Colonia Independencia, just outside of the city's downtown area, the temple is one of the larger Church edifices in northern Mexico. It is dedicated to Virgin Mary in her guise as Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Patroness of America, who appeared to St Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill outside Mexico City in 1531. It is smaller than its counterpart, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, which without a doubt enjoys a more national and international fame. Year after year, the church becomes the destination for thousands of faithfuls devoted to the Virgin, especially on the days prior to her feast day, December 12. On that date, beginning at the stroke of midnight leading into the 12th, mariachis play and sing traditional songs, or the mañanitas, paying tribute to the Virgin. Usually, the weeks prior to Our Lady's holiday, pilgrimages are made by peregrinos who arrive praying or chanting, and matachines who dance all the way up to the basilica. They all emerge from various directions to converge onto the church to pray and hear Mass in front of the copy of the image of the Guadalupana. The original is in the Mexico City basilica. Other notable Catholic churches in the area are: Catedral de Monterrey (The Monterrey Cathedral), La Basilica de la Purísima Concepcion commonly known as "La Purisima", Capilla de los Dulces Nombres (the Chapel of the Sweet Names), San Juan Bautista de La Salle, Basilica de Nuestra Senora del Roble, El Sagrado Corazon and the Antigua Basilica de Guadalupe (Old Basilica).

Cerro de la Silla

Cerro de la Silla, named for its distinctive saddle-shaped profile when viewed from the west, is a famous symbol of the landscape of the state of Nuevo León, Mexico. Even though the mountain itself is located in the adjacent city of Guadalupe, it is widely associated to the city of Monterrey, Mexico. It covers an area of 60.5 square kilometres . The mountain has four peaks: Pico Antena, Pico Norte, Pico Sur and Pico la Virgen; Pico Norte is the highest at 1820 m while Pico la Virgen is the lowest at 1750 m . Set aside as a Natural Monument by the government of Mexico in 1991, the mountain, or hill, as it is said to them also to the mountains in Mexico, is a popular recreational area and is often climbed by hikers who take a 5.3 km trail to reach the top. The ascent is considered fairly difficult, requiring approximately 3 hours to complete. A panoramic view of the city of Monterrey can be seen from the top. In the second half of the 20th century, an aerial tramway was built to give a fastest access to the iconic mountain for the population. The day of its inauguration was also the day of its closure, as a tragic accident took the lives of five people, including the engineer Jesús Fernández, its designer. Several plans have been announced to rebuild another tramway with no results. Some other known mountains or elevations of the zone are: Cerro de las Mitras, the Sierra Madre Oriental with the Cerro de Chipinque —the M-shaped figure visible from various parts of the city—, the Cerro del Topo Chico, Cerro del Obispado, Cerro de la Loma Larga and La Huasteca.

Monterrey Mexico Temple

The Monterrey Mexico Temple is the 110th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . The Monterrey Mexico Temple was the 12th LDS temple to be built in Mexico. It serves over 91,000 members in the city of Monterrey and the northeast of the country in general. Prior to the construction of the temple, members had to travel as long as 25 hours and cross the U.S.–Mexico border to attend Spanish-speaking sessions at the church's Mesa Arizona Temple. Due to local resistance to the original site chosen for the temple, ground was not broken for five years following the announcement of the temple. Although the church won a three-year legal suit, officials decided to relocate the temple site to appease neighbors of the original site. The new temple site is located in the Huajuco zone of Monterrey along the National Highway. Construction on the temple began on November 4, 2000. A two-week open house prior to the dedication of the temple attracted about 40,000 people. Among the attendees were business, government, civic leaders, and officials from other religious faiths. On April 28, 2002, LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley dedicated the Monterrey Mexico Temple, the 75th temple he had dedicated. The Monterrey Mexico Temple has a classic modern design with a single-spire. The exterior is finished with white granite. It has a total of 16,498 square feet , two ordinance rooms, and two sealing rooms.

Estadio Tecnológico

The Estadio Tecnológico is a multi-purpose stadium located in Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. The stadium is part of the facilities of the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education . C.F. Monterrey play their home games there, but only rent the space and are not affiliated with the institute. The team is scheduled to move to their new stadium, Estadio BBVA Bancomer in Guadalupe, in August 2015. The college football team for ITESM, Borregos Salvajes, also uses the stadium for their home games. The stadium was opened on July 17, 1950 by Mexican president Miguel Alemán Valdés. Originally, it seated 20,000 spectators, but in 1985 it was expanded to 38,000 seats for its use in the 1986 Mexico FIFA World Cup. In the early 1990s luxury boxes were added which reduced the capacity to its current figure. On February 12, 2006, the Irish rock band U2 opened the 4th leg of its Vertigo Tour at the Estadio Tecnológico, to a crowd of 42,000.

Mirador del Obispado

The Mirador del Obispado is located at the top of the Cerro del Obispado in the northern city of Monterrey, Mexico. It features the biggest bandera monumental in Mexico. The hill and the lookout receive their name from the building constructed in the middle of the hill by the end of the 18th century, the Palacio del Obispado . At an altitude of 775 meters above the sea level the lookout consists of a 40 meters of diameter round-shaped esplanade with the flag pole at its center. There are benches, a small parking lot and 3 French gardens. The installations are also equipped with restrooms and water troughs. It was conceived as a family walking stroll so the main road is very wide and well illuminated. Cars are allowed to pass but the main parking lot is at the entrance of the Park.

Museum of Steel

The Museum of Steel, known as the Museo del Acero, is located in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo León, Mexico. The Museo del Acero is one of the largest museums ever created in Mexico. It is located on the site of the very large Fundidora steel plant that was decommissioned in the mid 1980s. For 80 years, the Fundidora plant was an important part of the economic and social fabric of this city of 3.7 million people, and its conversion to a major educational facility has been very well received. The new museum, built in and around a decommissioned blast furnace, has emerged as a new focal point for the region The newly restored 230-foot high blast furnace Horno No. 3, the city’s most recognizable icon dominating the Monterrey skyline, makes the museum unique. The Oficina de Arquitectura partnered with Grimshaw Architects and exhibit designers AldrichPears Associates to create a museum, while preserving its historical character. New galleries include: Gallery of History, Gallery of Steel, The Blast Furnace Show and the Cast Hall. The Museo del Acero opened in the Fundidora Park in the fall of 2007.

Auditorio Banamex

Auditorio Banamex is an indoor amphitheatre, located in Fundidora Park, in Monterrey, Nuevo León. It was the primary venue for concerts until the Arena Monterrey opened in 2003. The amphitheatre opened in 1994 with a sponsorship by The Coca-Cola Company. When the venue was used less frequently, Mexican financial group Grupo Financiero Banamex, became its new sponsor with a $20 million investment. The venue closed for nearly two years to set forth renovations, which included updating the overall structure of the venue, converting it to an indoor amphitheatre. Additional upgrades included showrooms, a lounge along with other recreational areas. The venue reopened in September 2010 with a three-month-long celebration, featuring concerts by: Vicente Fernández, Alejandra Guzmán, Chayanne, Marco Antonio Solís and Miguel Bosé. The amphitheatre is used for mid-sized concerts, attracting numerous international performers every year.

Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey

Estadio de Béisbol Monterrey is a baseball stadium in Monterrey, Mexico. It is the home field of the Sultanes Monterrey Mexican League baseball team. It holds 27,000 people, making it the largest baseball stadium in Mexico and the third largest in Latin America. The stadium is located meters away from the Estadio Universitario, the AFAIM stadium, the Niños Heroes Park and the Niños Heroes Metro station, and not far from the Plaza de Toros Monumental Monterrey "Lorenzo Garza" . The stadium was inaugurated in games starting on 13 July 1990 when Monterrey played host to the World Youth Baseball Championship . The first LMB game was held 20 July 1990 when the Sultanes defeated the Tecolotes de Nuevo Laredo in 12 innings. In 1991 it hosted some preliminary games during the Pan American Games, although the baseball final series between host Cuba and Puerto Rico was held at Estadio Latinoamericano in Havana. In August 1996, it also hosted a three game series between the National Leagues San Diego Padres and New York Mets, marking the first time Major League Baseball was played in Mexico. It was also the site of an Opening Day game between the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres in April 1999. It has also hosted several other events such as concerts. Some of the artists that have played at the stadium are the Mexican group Maná and the late Tex-mex singer Selena.

Faro del Comercio

Faro del Comercio is a monument designed by the accomplished Mexican architect Luis Barragán and constructed in 1984 by architect Raúl Ferrera. It is a recognizable sight in Monterrey among many other modern manmade landmarks, such as Neptunes Fountain, the Monterrey City Hall, the Papal Bridge, and the Bridge of Unity in San Pedro, connecting that municipality to Monterrey. These sites are intended on one hand to complement the citys few remaining traditional landmarks, such as, the Bishopric Palace and Museum, the Citys Cathedral, the Central Post Office, and the State of Nuevo León Government building, on the north end of the Macroplaza. On the other hand they are also intended to project an image of a city that prides itself as being the most progressive large industrial city of Mexico. El Faro del Comercio was built in commemoration of the founding of the Chamber of Commerce of Monterreys on its 100 year anniversary. It is located near the south end of the Macroplaza facing the Citys Cathedral and behind the new Monterrey City Hall. El Faro del Comercio is 69.80 meters tall and 12.33 meters wide. Its bright reddish-orange color attracts attention when visiting the Macroplaza, Monterreys central park. At nights, the landmark frequently projects a rotating green spotlight which interrupts the citys night sky with its beam in a somewhat random cycle in the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey. Recently, many large reflecting white spotlights from the nearby Museum of Mexican History Museo de Historia Mexicana and Santa Lucia Riverwalk, and around the Bishopric Hill where in 2005 the largest Mexican flag was installed and flown at night, as well as from high-power reflectors of many commercial establishments, clash randomly in the sky, visible from most locations in Monterrey and the surrounding areas. After failing or being "out of commission" for several years due to an impractical technical laser mechanism which intended to have three colored lasers and a much greater visual impact on the dark skies of the surrounding areas, some of the original mechanism was salvaged and partially replaced and redesigned to have some operational ability with the green color. The redesign has some success since green is the color for which the eye is most sensitive and allows the perception of more light for the power limitations. However, the new design falls far short of the original claims for the construction. The structure was repainted after the laser renovation and reinaugurated at the 196th Independence Day Anniversary celebration on September 16, 2006.
