Lake Kenozero

Lake Kenozero is a freshwater lake, located in the south-west of Plesetsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast in Russia. It is one of the biggest lakes in Arkhangelsk Oblast and the biggest one in Plesetsky District. The area of the lake is 68.6 square kilometres, and the area of its basin is 5,450 square kilometres . Lake Kenozero is the source of the Kena River, a tributary of the Onega River. The lake thus belongs to the Onega basin and the White Sea basin. The lake is located close to the border of Arkhangelsk Oblast and Republic of Karelia. It belongs to Kenozersky National Park. The basin of Lake Kenozero covers a vast area in the western part of Plesetsky District and some minor areas of Onezhsky District. The main tributary of the lake is the Pocha, which, in turn, flows out of Lake Pochozero. The main tributary of Lake Pochozero is the Undosha. The source of the Undosha is Lake Undozero, one of the biggest lakes of the region, and a major right tributary is the Toksha. The lake has a sophisticated shape and in fact consists of three lakes connected by straights: Lake Kenozero proper, Lake Svinoye, and Lake Dolgoye. The shape is determined by the fact that Lake Kenozero is located in the rift of the earthcrust, in contrast to other lakes in Kenozersky National Park, all of them being of glacial origin. There are over 70 islands on Lake Kenozero. Until the 1990s, the lake served for timber rafting. The rafts were made in the course of the Undosha and the destination was the Onega. There are a dozen of villages at the lakeshore, the biggest of which are Vershinino and Pershlakhta. The road connects the northern shore with Onezhsky Trakt, the road connecting Kargopol via Plesetsk to Yemetsk. The road continues north to Pochozero and upstream Toksha River to the village of Nizhneye Ustye. There is regular bus service on this road, connecting Nizhneye Ustye with the selo of Konyovo and eventually with the district center of Plesetsk. The roads at the western and southern shores are not all-seasonal and are connected to the road network in the village of Morshchikhinskaya on Lake Lyokshmozero.

Lake Kozhozero

Lake Kozhozero is a freshwater lake, located in the south of Onezhsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast in Russia. It is one of the biggest lakes in Arkhangelsk Oblast and biggest one in Onezhsky District. The area of the lake is 97.4 square kilometres, and the area of its basin is 2,560 square kilometres . Lake Kozhozero is the source of Kozha River, which is a left tributary of the Onega River and thus belongs to the White Sea basin. The lake is located in the remote area and is not connected to the outside world by any all-season roads. It is notable as a location of the Kozheozersky Monastery, known since 1560. The basin of Lake Kozhozero comprises areas in the south of Onezhsky District as well as in the north-west of Plesetsky District, also in Arkhangelsk Oblast. The lake is elongated from the north-west to the south-east, and approximately in the middle is crossed into two parts by a peninsula attached to the eastern shore. The Kozheozersky Monastery is located at the neck of the peninsula. The Kozha River flows out of the northern part of the lake. Lake Kozhozero is the biggest from the system of connected freshwater lakes, which also include Lake Vingozero to the north-west and Lake Kurusskoye to the east. The peninsula originally was an island, known as Kozheostrov. Nikon, the future patriarch of Moscow and reformer of Russian Orthodox Church, was a hegumen of the monastery from 1643 to 1646. During his tenure, the island was connected by a dam with the shore and became a peninsula. The monastery was closed down in 1918, and for some time its ruins hosted resettled peasants. This settlement was known as Kozhposyolok. In 1954, Kozhposyolok was abandoned, and the monastery was repopulated in 1997 and consecrated in 1999. There are no other settlements on Lake Kozhozero.

Lake Lyokshmozero

Lake Lyokshmozero is a freshwater lake, located in the north-west of Kargopolsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast in Russia. It is one of the biggest lakes in Arkhangelsk Oblast and the second biggest in Kargopolsky District . The area of the lake is 54.4 square kilometres, and the area of its basin is 197 square kilometres . Lake Lyokshmozero is the source of Lyokshma River, a tributary of Lake Lacha. The lake thus belongs to the Onega River basin and the White Sea basin. The lake is located close to the border of Arkhangelsk Oblast and Republic of Karelia. It belongs to Kenozersky National Park. The lake has an oval shape, elongated in the northg-west south-east direction. The Lekshma flows out of the south-eastern corner and flows south-east. There are four villages at the shores of the lake, Morshchikhinskaya, Kazarinovskaya, Ileksinskaya, and Khvalinskaya. The two latter villages are located on the unpaved road connecting Kargopol and Pudozh. The lake has a glacial origin.

Lake Lacha

Lake Lacha is a freshwater lake, located in the south of Kargopolsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast in Russia, 7 kilometres south of the town of Kargopol. It is the largest lake in Arkhangelsk Oblast, with a surface area of 334 square kilometres and a basin area of 12,600 square kilometres . Lake Lacha is the source of the Onega River, one of the major waterways of the White Sea basin. The etymological origin of the name is unclear. The river basin of Lake Lacha includes the southern and western parts of Kargopolsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast, as well as north-west of Vologda Oblast. In particular, it includes two of the biggest lakes of Arkhangelsk and Vologda Oblasts, Lake Vozhe and Lake Lyokshmozero. The southern part of the Kenozersky National Park also drains into Lake Lacha. The stretch between Kargopol and the lake is navigable, however, neither the Svid River upstream from the lake nor the Onega River downstream are navigable because of the rapids. There are occasional recreational boat trips from Kargopol to the lake but no passenger or cargo navigation. Several villages are located on or close to the banks, including Morshchikhinskaya, Tobolkino, and Filosofskaya. The latter pair are located on the road connecting Kargopol with Lipin Bor via Sovza. Another unpaved road runs from Kargopol along the right bank of the Onega to the lake and then to the village of Bolshaya Kondratovskaya, several kilometers from the lakeshore.

Lake Undozero

Lake Undozero is a freshwater lake, located in the west of Plesetsky District of Arkhangelsk Oblast in Russia. It is one of the biggest lakes in Arkhangelsk Oblast and the second biggest one in Plesetsky District. The area of the lake is 44.7 square kilometres, and the area of its basin is 709 square kilometres . Lake Undozero is the source of the Undosha River, which belongs to the river basin the Onega River and thus to the White Sea basin. The lake has a sophisticated shape and contains a number of islands. The source of the Undosha is in the south-western corner. The main tributary of the lake is the Lopa, which shortly upstream from the mouth accepts from the left a major tributary, the Yonza. There are three villages on Lake Undozero, Skarlakhta, Pogost, and Mezen. Skarlakhta is connected by the railroad to the east via the settlement of Severoonezhsk with the railway station Puksa located on the railway line between Vologda and Arkhangelsk. The same railroad continues west to the village of Yangory. There have been plans to extend it west to Medvezhyegorsk, but these have never been realized. The railway belongs to the Department of corrections, and as a matter of fact, there are settlements around the village of Skarlakhta inhabited by convicted criminals who have previously served a part of their jail term. There is a regular passenger traffic on the railroad. There was an air field in Pogost. There are no all-season roads connecting Undozero with the main road network. Undozero is popular as a starting point for rafting down the Undosha. Almost the whole course of the Undosha is not populated, with the exception of Lake Undozero and a number of villages close to its mouth at Lake Pochozero. . Therefore the rafters start in Skarlakhta and finish at Lake Kenozero. Before the railroad was constructed in the 1970s, the only way to get to Undozero for the rafters was to start in Severoonezhsk, take rafts upstream the Iksa, and them bring them to Undozero by land.
