Top Attractions in Redcar

Zetland

The Zetland is the oldest surviving lifeboat in the world. It is currently in a free museum in Redcar. The name Zetland comes from the local Lord of Manor, the Marquess of Zetland. The Zetland is on the National Register of Historic Ships, as part of the National Historic Fleet. The lifeboat was stationed at Redcar in 1802, built by Henry Greathead of South Shields. Not all rescue attempts were successful. On Christmas Day 1836, a crewman was washed from the Zetland and drowned during a vain attempt to save the crew of the Danish brig Caroline. The man, William Guy, was a Tees pilot, and it is said that he left a service in chapel to take his place in the lifeboat. During 1858 the Tees Bay Lifeboat Society decided to hand over the administration of their boats to the RNLI. On 17 February 1864, the Zetland sustained damage whilst rescuing the crew of seven from the brig Brothers. The RNLI considered the old boat no longer fit for service and supplied a new self-righting lifeboat named Crossley. Arrangements were made to have the Zetland broken up and a local carpenter was employed to carry out the task. An angry crowd prevented the work commencing and, after negotiation, the boat was given to the townspeople providing it would not compete with the new RNLI lifeboat. In 1872, the Zetland was repaired following fundraising which totalled £100. In 1880, it was launched with two other Redcar lifeboats and saved 7 sailors lives from the brig Luna. The boat was the centrepiece of 1963 International Lifeboat Conference in Edinburgh. Listed as part of the National Historic Fleet, the Zetland lifeboat remains fully preserved and open for public visits in the Zetland Lifeboat Museum, which is a listed building on the Esplanade, Redcar, just a few hundred yards from the present Redcar Lifeboat Station.

Teesdale Way

The Teesdale Way is a long distance walk between the North Sea coast of North Yorkshire and the Cumbrian Pennines in England. The walk is 100 miles 100 miles / 161 km in length, it links in with other long distance walks such as the Pennine Way and the E2 European Walk between Harwich and Stranraer. The Teesdale way ends in Warrenby near Redcar, having passed through the heavily industrialised Teesside area, consisting of Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Thornaby-on-Tees. This gives a great insight into the once proud ship building and industrial heritage of the North East. Between Yarm and Croft-on-Tees the river goes through the meandering lowland section of the Tees Valley. As the river heads downstream Upper Teesdale it passes through the historic settlements of Piercebridge and Barnard Castle. In Upper Teesdale the walk makes a U-turn at Eggleston Hall, heading down the other side of the dale, back to Barnard Castle. Thornaby and Basleton woods are connected to each other. They are located in Thornaby, in the Borough of Stockton-on-Tees. At six hectares, Thornaby Woods is a large area of ancient woodland and features trees such as oak, elm and witch. Roe deer have been seen in and around Thornaby and Basleton woods.

Redcar Central railway station

Redcar Central railway station serves the town of Redcar in the unitary authority of Redcar and Cleveland and the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire, England. The railway station is located on the Tees Valley Line 7 1⁄2 miles (12.1 km) east of Middlesbrough and operated by Northern who provide all passenger train services. Redcar Central has a staffed ticket office, open Monday to Saturday (07:50-14:45) but not on Sunday. A self-service ticket machine is available for use outside these hours or for collecting pre-paid tickets. There is also a waiting room that is open Monday to Saturday - these are both on the southern side (platform 1). Platform 2 has a shelter, timetable poster boards and bench seating. Unusually, unlike most stations, the two platforms are not opposite each other. Platform 1 is further west than platform 2 and there is a bridge over the track which connects the two. There is a level crossing over one of the major roads into Redcar at the end of platform 1 which can also be used to cross over the track. Nearby is the Redcar Station business park which houses a few local business units, contained within the old train shed. Station facilities here were improved in 2013. The package for this station included improved platform lighting, renewed station signage, digital information screens and the installation of CCTV. The long-line Public Address system (PA) has been renewed and upgraded with pre-recorded train announcements. Step-free access is available to both sides.

Redcar Jazz Club

Redcar Jazz Club was a music venue located in the seaside town of Redcar, North Yorkshire, England. It was a regular stop for up-and-coming rock musicians during the 1960s and early 1970s. Almost all the famous, or soon to be famous names, played the venue for the local audience. Bands such as Cream, Yes, Curved Air and Pink Floyd all occupied the stage in the ballroom of the Coatham Hotel a Victorian edifice in the grand style. The ballroom, which was the location of the weekly concerts, occupied a later extension to the building on the unfinished east end, the original builder apparently having run out of money in the 1870s. It was owned by Charles Amer who was the jazz band leader of the Charles Amer Orchestra. In the early 1970s bands became too large, both for the small audiences which could fit in the ballroom, and the small stage which had to accommodate ever larger amounts of equipment. The Club folded, and the Hotel has been renovated into luxury apartments, under the name Regency Mansions. In 2007, the home of the Redcar Jazz Club again came to prominence when the Coatham Hotel building was featured in the film Atonement.
