Top Attractions in Bel Air

Tudor Hall

Tudor Hall is a historic home located at Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland, United States. It is a 1 1/2-story Gothic Revival cottage built of painted brick. The house was built as a country retreat by Junius Brutus Booth from Plates 44 and 45, Design XVII, of The Architect, by William H. Ranlett, 1847. However, Booth never lived in Tudor Hall, because he died before it was completed. His son Edwin Booth lived there only briefly on his return from California before he moved the family back into Baltimore.. But his other son, John Wilkes Booth, lived there with his mother, brother Joseph, and two sisters from December of 1852 through most of 1856. After the family moved out, they rented the home to the King family and later sold it to Sam Kyle and Ella Mahoney. She lived in Tudor Hall for 70 years and opened a museum. After her death the house passed through a succession of owners, including the Worthington family, who owned the Aegis newspaper. Finally the house was sold to the Foxes, who reopened Mahoneys museum. Tudor Hall was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. A modification to its listing, to decrease its boundaries, was registered in 1982. After the Preservation Association of Tudor Hall collapsed, Tudor Hall was sold to the Bakers and later to Harford County, who are now in possession of the historic home. Currently residing there is the Center for the Arts; in 2008 they installed a docent program which gives tours, currently two Sundays a month from April to October.

Medical Hall Historic District

Medical Hall Historic District is a historic home and national historic district near Churchville, Harford County, Maryland, United States. The home was constructed of stuccoed stone between 1825 and 1840 and is five bays long, two bays wide, and two and a half stories high. The façade features a centrally placed door with sidelights and a rectangular transom subdivided in a radiating pattern. Also on the property is a stone springhouse which 20th century owners have converted into a pumphouse and a stone cottage believed to be a 19th-century tenant house. The property is associated with John Archer, the first man to receive a degree in medicine in America. One of his sons was Congressman, judge of the circuit court, and Chief Justice of Maryland Stevenson Archer . It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

Liriodendron

Liriodendron is a historic home and estate located at Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland, United States. It was the summer home of Laetitia and Dr Howard Kelly, a successful surgeon and founding member of the Johns Hopkins Medical College, and comprises the mansion named Liriodendron; the Graybeal-Kelly House; a circa 1835 bank barn; a circa 1898 carriage house; a circa 1850 board-and-batten cottage; and five other outbuildings including a corn crib, a smokehouse, two ice houses, and a shed. The 2 1/2-story, stuccoed brick mansion was designed by the Baltimore architectural firm of Wyatt and Nolting in the Georgian Revival style and constructed about 1898. The 2 1/2-story Georgian-style Graybeal-Kelly House, built about 1835, was the manor house for the farm until the mansion was constructed. It is used as a wedding, conference, and arts facility. Liriodendron was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

APG Federal Credit Union Arena

APG Federal Credit Union Arena, originally known as the Susquehanna Center, is an indoor arena at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Maryland. It hosts indoor sports for HCCs Fighting Owls programs, community and regional events, commencements, concerts, special events, student services, fundraising activities, meetings, conferences and trade shows. Capacity for sports events has been listed at 2,552, with up to 3,400 seats for indoor floor events such as concerts. The original Susquehanna Center was a 49,150 ft² indoor athletic complex featuring a multi-purpose gymnasium, fitness center, dance studio, 25-yard swimming pool with grandstand, locker rooms, and offices for Harford sports. It was gutted in Summer 2011 to make way for extensive renovations and the construction of the new arena. Total size of the finished facility with arena will be 86,610 ft²; a groundbreaking ceremony for the new facility was held on August 23, 2011. On February 27, 2012, it was announced that APG Federal Credit Union had bought the naming rights for the facility for $50,000 annually over 15 years.

Ma and Pa Trail

The Ma and Pa Trail is a 6.25-mile multi-purpose rail trail that follows the path of the old Ma and Pa Railroad through Harford County, Maryland. It contains three linked trails, one unconnected, with plans to bridge the gap in the middle, bringing the total length to 10 miles . Both links of the trail are paved, have few steep hills or hazards, and contain overlooks and bridges when necessary. The Bel Air Trail is a 2.5-mile trail that runs from Williams Street in downtown to the Equestrian Center on the other side of the bypass. It passes underneath of the Maryland Route 24 highway, the U.S. Route 1 bypass, and crosses Tollgate Road, where it meets the Fallston Trail. Spurs off of it connect to the Harford Mall and Liriodendron mansion, and branches out to a dog park at the end. It serves as a shortcut across town, rather than walking along highways, and contains several bridges across branches of the creek while cutting through the forested Heavenly Waters Park. Bathrooms and parking are available at each end of the trail. Horses and dogs are permitted on the Bel Air link of the path. The Fallston Link is a 2-mile segment dedicated on June 7, 2008, that runs from the Equestrian Center to the Edgeley Grove Farm area of Fallston. The Forest Hill Trail is a third, 1.75-mile link of the trail running from the duckpond at Friends Park to Melrose Lane. A tunnel is located at MD 23, but passes over a development street on the north end. Bathrooms and parking are located at each end. Dogs are allowed on the Forest Hill link, but horses are not. As of late 2006, planning is underway to link the two routes into one continuous trail . At the time of the original constructions, a tunnel was built underneath of US 1 in preparation, but it is unconnected to any path system. Construction for an extension from Bel Air to the Edgeley Grove area in Fallston is planned, and a 4.1-mile northern link at Dooley Road, near the state line in Cardiff is under study.

Deer Creek

Deer Creek is a 52.9-mile-long river in Maryland that flows through the scenic areas of Harford County and empties into the Susquehanna River, roughly halfway between the Interstate 95 bridge and Conowingo Dam. Its watershed area is 171 square miles . Its watershed area in MD is 145 square miles , with 3% impervious surface in 1994. It serves as a divider between the agricultural and urban/suburban areas of Harford County. Deer Creek rises in Shrewsbury in York County, Pennsylvania, and flows southeast, soon entering Maryland. It cuts across the northeastern corner of Baltimore County and into Harford County, where it runs through Rocks State Park, Palmer State Park, and Susquehanna State Park, passing north of the Bel Air area. Deer Creek supported the last known population of the Maryland darter, the only endemic vertebrate in Maryland [3]. The creek is commonly used for recreation in the summer months. The Deer Creek Bridge, Stewartstown Railroad carries the Stewartstown Railroad over Deer Creek in Hopewell Township and Shrewsbury Township, Pennsylvania.

Harford Sports Complex

Harford Sports Complex, formerly Thomas Run Park, is a multi-purpose sports park in Bel Air, Harford County, Maryland, utilized by Harford Community College. It consists of one lit all-grass regulation baseball field, one turf infield/grass outfield regulation baseball field, two lit skin softball fields, a concession pavilion, stadium, basketball courts, and lit tennis courts. The fields are operated and owned by nearby Harford Community College. The complex is also occasionally used by Harford Technical High School as well as other area high schools, and by community adult baseball and softball teams. The baseball complex was home to the Atlantic League Aberdeen Arsenal baseball team in 2000, before the Aberdeen IronBirds moved to the completed Ripken Stadium in 2002. The expanded field had a capacity of about 2,000, which has since been dismantled back down to the original bleachers and walkways.
