Sayen Park Botanical Garden

Sayen Park Botanical Garden, also known as Sayen House and Gardens, is a municipal park and botanical garden located at 155 Hughes Drive, Hamilton Square, an area within Hamilton Township, New Jersey. The garden is open year-round from dawn to dusk without charge, though park activity is at its peak in the spring. The garden began in 1912 when Frederick Sayen purchased the site with his wife, Anne Mellon, a daughter of the Mellon family. The Sayens built a "bungalow" home in the Arts and Crafts style, though with Victorian interior design, and surrounded it with plants and flowers acquired during world travels. The principal collections include species from China, Japan, and England. The Sayen site became municipal property in 1988, when Hamilton Township purchased the site from developer David Cellars. The park was opened to the public in 1991. The township expanded and improved the park in 2003. Today the garden contains more than 1,000 azaleas, nearly 500 rhododendrons, and more than 250,000 flowering bulbs for spring display, as well as ponds, bridges, gazebos, and walking trails. Sayen House and Gardens hosts an annual Azalea Festival each Mothers Day, during which Sayen House is open to the public from 10AM to 4PM.

William Trent House

The William Trent House, the oldest house in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, was built for William Trent. He founded the eponymous town, which became the capital of New Jersey. It has served as the residence for three Governors. During the Summer of 1798, the federal government evacuated to Trenton to escape a yellow fever epidemic plaguing the temporary national capital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Following Congresss adjournment in July, President John Adams spent the rest of the summer and most of the fall at his home in Quincy, Massachusetts. Trent House housed federal offices until November, when the danger was deemed to have passed. Recently, the building has been undergoing renovation including a new visitors center, funded by a grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust. It serves as a historic house museum.

Isaac Watson House

The Isaac Watson House is the headquarters of the New Jersey State Society of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution . It is located just outside the state capital of Trenton in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, situated on a bluff overlooking Watson’s Creek and the Abbott Farm National Historic Landmark in John A. Roebling Park, a 257 acre nature preserve. Built by Isaac Watson in 1708, the stone house is recognized as the oldest house in Mercer County. Originally 800 acres, the grounds at one time ran from the bluff to the Delaware River The building was restored by the DAR as part of the New Jersey Tercentenary Celebration in 1964 and listed on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places in 1972 and National Register of Historic Places in 1974.

Port Mercer Canal House

The Port Mercer Canal House is a historic house along the Delaware and Raritan Canal. It is located at 4278 Quakerbridge Road in the Port Mercer section of Lawrence Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, near the border of West Windsor Township and Princeton, New Jersey. The house was built in the 1830s as housing for bridgetender and his family. The bridgetender was needed to open the swing bridge when canal boats came through, then close it to allow traffic to cross over the canal. From approximately 1900 to 1934, the bridgetender was John Arrowsmith. He and his wife lived in the three bedroom house with their eight children. The Arrowsmiths loved living at the house and their children enjoyed sleeping outside by the canal in the summer and skating on the frozen canal to Trenton in the winter. The Delaware and Raritan Canal and the canal houses are now part of the New Jersey State Park system. In the 1970s, the Lawrence Historical Society began restoring the Port Mercer Canal House to the 1890-1920 time period. Around 1900, a first floor kitchen was added. Prior to this addition, Mrs. Arrowsmith, who was known as a good cook, did all of the cooking for the large family and friends by the fireplace in the basement of the house. The house and the Port Mercer area are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Outside of the house, the grounds have been landscaped with small gardens and include an outhouse which was built just before the American Civil War. Today, the house serves as the headquarters for the Lawrence Historical Society. Each year in June, the Historical Society holds an open house and garden party event in which the public is invited for free house tours, live music, and food. Throughout the rest of the year, tours can be arranged by appointment. The second floor of the house is currently rented to a tenant, where the original three bedrooms have been converted into a kitchen, den, and one bedroom.

Grounds for Sculpture

Grounds For Sculpture is a 42-acre sculpture park and museum located in Hamilton Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States, on the former site of the New Jersey State Fairgrounds. Founded in 1992 by John Seward Johnson II, the venue was intended to be dedicated to promoting an understanding of and appreciation for contemporary sculpture by organizing exhibitions, publishing catalogues, and offering a variety of educational programs and special community events. In July 2000, it became a nonprofit organization open to the public. Operation revenues for the park come from visitors, art patrons, donations, and grants. The grounds have over two hundred and seventy large-scale contemporary sculptures, with works by Johnson and other American and international artists. The parks outdoor collection grows by fifteen sculptures annually.

Trenton War Memorial

Trenton and Mercer County War Memorial-Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Building, known as the Trenton War Memorial is located in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The building was built in 1930 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 11, 1986. It was designed by Louis S. Kaplan, who as a young architect won a competition to design Trentons memorial to its Dead from World War One. Kaplan then supervised the building of the War Memorial, and after its dedication became the leading architect in Trenton until the early 1960s. Built as a concert hall, it fell into disrepair before being restored by the State of New Jersey in the 1990s. It was rededicated in 1999. The 1,807-seat theater at the War Memorial was renamed the Patriots Theater in 2001.

Abbott Farm Historic District

The Abbott Farm Historic District is a National Historic Landmark archeological site in New Jersey. It is the largest known Middle Woodland village of its type on the eastern seaboard of the United States. Significant evidence suggests that the Delaware River floodplain was occupied by Paleoindian people for a long period. It was inhabited between 500 BC and 500 AD. It has been a source of controversy and debate around early development. The district encompasses some 2,000 acres of marshlands and bluffs in southern Mercer County and northern Burlington County, in the communities of Hamilton Township, Bordentown, and Bordentown Township. The area, in addition to its archeological importance, includes historically important buildings and transportation-related structures. Included within its boundaries are John A. Roebling Park and the Isaac Watson House in Hamilton Township.

Trenton Bath House

The Trenton Bath House is a pivotal, influential design by the architect Louis Kahn, with the help of his associate, renowned architect Anne Tyng, at 999 Lower Ferry Road, Ewing Township, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is neither in Trenton, New Jersey, nor is it a bath house, but the so-called "Trenton Bath House" commands attention from architectural historians around the world. Designed as part of a larger plan for the Jewish Community Center of the Delaware Valley, the "bath house" opened in 1955 and served as the entrance and changing area for patrons of an outdoor swimming pool. From a design perspective, the bath house actually appears as a simple cruciform—four square concrete block rooms or areas, surrounding an open atrium. Each of the rooms is topped by a simple, wooden rectangular pyramid. At the corner of each room there is a large, open rectangular column that supports the roof. However, closer inspection reveals that in addition to the pure design elegance, Kahn also clarified his thinking about the utilitarian purposes of the various spaces, and it was in this building that he first articulated his notion of spaces serving and spaces served. Kahn often spoke of this project as a turning point in his design philosophy, "From this came a generative force which is recognizable in every building which I have done since." On August 10, 2006, Mercer County and Ewing Township purchased the bath house from the Jewish Community Center for $8.1 million, using funds from the Open Space Preservation Trust Fund. This action ensures that the historic integrity of the bath house will be protected. Ewing plans to use the main J.C.C. building as a senior citizens center. The J.C.C. had planned to move to a new 80-acre site located on Clarksville Road in West Windsor Township, but funding ran out.

Cadwalader Park

Cadwalader Park is a city park located in Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The nearly 100 acres green space is Trenton's oldest park. It is named for Thomas Cadwalader, who lived for a while near Trenton where he became the chief burgess in 1746. Trenton's "central park" was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Work on the park was begun in 1887, following the purchase of Ellarslie Mansion from George Farlee. a committee of the Common Council for the city of Trenton sought a location for what would become the City Park, and contacted Olmsted. Though perhaps best known for his design of Central Park in New York, Olmsted applied the same approach in the design of Cadwalader Park. The Mansion, which houses the Trenton City Museum, is at the center of the park. At one time the park had a train stop along the long gone Belvidere-Delaware Railroad. The park has a deer paddock, a stream, a small lake and hundreds of trees, including some that are rare at this latitude. An arm of the Delaware & Raritan Canal flows through the park. Neighborhoods bordering the park include Cadwalader Heights, Hiltonia, Hillcrest and Parkside.

Thomas Edison State University, formerly Thomas Edison State College, is a public institution of higher education located in Trenton, New Jersey. One of New Jersey's 11 public universities and colleges, Thomas Edison State University offers degrees at the undergraduate and graduate level. Thomas Edison State College was approved by the New Jersey Board of Education in December 1971, and established on July 1, 1972. The school was named in honor of Thomas Alva Edison, the inventor who lived in New Jersey for the bulk of his adult life and gained encyclopedic knowledge of many subject areas through self-directed learning. In 2015, Thomas Edison State University was awarded university status upon the approval of the state college Presidents' Council and Secretary of Higher Education Rochelle Hendricks. The school's Board of Trustees approved a resolution authorizing the change in December 2015.
