Sargent House Museum

The Sargent House Museum is a historic house museum located at 49 Middle Street, Gloucester, Massachusetts. Sargent House was built in the Georgian high-style in 1782 for the feminist writer and philosopher Judith Sargent Murray and her first husband, John Stevens, a merchant in the West Indies trade. Judiths second husband, John Murray, the founder of the first Universalist Church in America, also lived in the house. The central stairway is an unusually fine example of the skill of 18th-century woodworkers. It has an undercut spiral newel, two types of spiral balusters on each step, and a long arched window enclosed by Ionic columns at the landing. This stair was almost purchased by the MET Museum in NY around 1915 for installation their "period rooms." This spurred the former families and friends of the House to preserve it as a museum. The Museum houses a small but exquisite collection of American decorative arts and furniture. It displays sculpture by Hiram Powers and one of the finest collections of family portraits in the United States by major American artists like Christian Gullager, Thomas Sully, James Frothingham, and Alvan Fisher. It has landscape prints and a painting by Fitz Henry Lane. The Museum owns several Thomas Sheraton pieces of furniture, as well as furniture made in major American furniture centers like Boston, Salem, Newburyport and New Orleans. Artifacts from the life of Judith Sargent Murray such as her dictionary and first edition "The Gleaner" are also exhibited. The house has a collection of original works by the painter John Singer Sargent, a descendant of the Sargent family.

Gloucester City Hall

Gloucester City Hall is located at 9 Dale Avenue in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It was built in 1870 and dedicated the following year, and has served as the main location for the city's offices since then. Built to a design by Bryant and Rogers, it is a two story brick building with Victorian features that have a strong Second Empire influence. Each of the rectangular building's four corners is topped by its own pyramidal roof structure, above which is a small rectangular cupola with its own roof. Centered on the front elevation is a clock tower that is brick in its lower levels, and decorated wood above, ending in a copper dome. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, and included in the Central Gloucester Historic District in 1982.

White-Ellery House

The White-Ellery House is a historic house located at 247 Washington Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is owned and operated by the Cape Ann Museum, whose headquarters is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester.

William Haskell House

The William Haskell House is a historic colonial house at 11 Lincoln Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. This 2 1⁄2-story First Period house was built c. 1700. It is four bays wide, and includes additions made in the 18th century. In the early 20th century this house was purchased by sculptor A. H. Atkins, who made a number of alterations, but also took steps to preserve the house. Publicity over this work in the 1920s and 1930s contributed to growing interest in the preservation of First Period structures. The house was briefly owned by the Cape Ann Museum as a house museum. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Annisquam Bridge

The Annisquam Bridge is a historic bridge in Annisquam, Massachusetts, a village within the city of Gloucester. The bridge was built in 1861 to replace an earlier 1847 bridge that crossed Lobster Cove. It is a wooden pile bridge, a type of which only two others were found in New England as part of a c. 1979 survey. The bridge is 440 feet long and 30 feet wide, and had a drawbridge section in the center that was moved by a hand-cranked winch. The bridge has repeatedly been the subject of safety closings and restorative work over the course of the 20th century, and was completely rebuilt in 1946-7, removing the draw. Despite this, it was closed to vehicular traffic in 1968, and pedestrian traffic in 1987. The bridge has since been rehabilitated, and is open to pedestrian traffic. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

Wingaersheek Beach

Wingaersheek Beach is a 0.6-mile long beach located on the Annisquam River in West Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. According to the USGS the name is a corruption of the earlier Dutch name "Wyngaerts Hoeck", which was derived from "Wyngaerton" . The name was described by Professor Trumbull as "not Indian" but stated by Professor E. N. Horsford to be "an undoubted corruption of the German name, "Wyngaerts Hoeck", which occurs on many maps between 1630 and 1670, especially in Ogilbys "America"." The beach was alternatively called Coffins Beach for Peter Coffin whose farm was located alongside this beach."

Eastern Point Light

Eastern Point Light is an historic lighthouse on Cape Ann, in northeastern Massachusetts. The lighthouse was originally planned in 1829 and was erected by 1832 on the east side of the Gloucester Harbor entrance. It was first lit on January 1, 1832. The tower was rebuilt in 1848 and again in 1890. The third and current conical brick tower stands 36 feet tall. The lighthouse has an attached two-story keeper's quarters, built in 1879. The actual light is 57 feet above Mean High Water. Its white light is visible for 20 nautical miles . In 1880, the lighthouse was occupied by American landscape painter Winslow Homer. It was automated by September 1985 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. The lighthouse is currently operated by the United States Coast Guard and is closed to the public. A distinctive rock formation known as Mother Ann is located along the shore near the lighthouse.

Ten Pound Island Light

The Ten Pound Island Light is a historic lighthouse in Gloucester Harbor in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It is located on Ten Pound Island, near the eastern end of the harbor. The tower, built in 1881, is a conical cast iron structure 30 feet tall, replacing a stone tower first built on the site in 1821. The main body is painted white, and the top is painted black. The tower is the only surviving part of a more extensive light station, which included a keeper's house and an oil house; only ruins survive. The lighthouse was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. Both Winslow Homer and Fitz Henry Lane painted the first tower.

Our Lady of Good Voyage Church

Our Lady of Good Voyage Church is a historic Roman Catholic church at 136-144 Prospect Street and 2-4 Taylor Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The first church on the site was built in 1892 to serve a large Portuguese immigrant population that came to Gloucester to work in the fishery. That church burned in 1914, and this Spanish Revival building, designed to resemble the Santa Maria Madalena church in the Azorean community of Madalena on the island of Pico. The church also includes one of the oldest sets of full carillon bells in the United States. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Front Street Block

The Front Street Block is a series of four connected commercial blocks in the West End of Gloucester, Massachusetts, USA. They were built in 1831 after a fire had devastated Gloucester's downtown the previous year. 69-71 Main Street, a three story four wide block with Federalist styling, was built for Aaron Day. A hat maker operated on the ground floor, and apartments were above. 65-67 Main Street, a three story four wide block with Federalist styling, was built for Samuel Bulkley. A "tin manufactory" operated on the ground floor, and there were apartments above. This building shared a wall with 69-71. 61-63 Main Street, also three stories and four wide, was built for William Babson, Jr., and had a shop on the ground floor with apartments above. In 1890 this building was renovated, giving it a new Victorian facade, and an enlarging addition to the rear. 55-59 Main Street is distinct from the other three buildings in being only two stories, and for having a hipped roof. It was built for Henry Smith, and first housed a cabinet maker on the ground floor, with living space above. They were collectively listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, and further included in the Central Gloucester Historic District in 1982.

First Parish Burial Ground

The First Parish Burial Ground is a historic cemetery near 122 Centennial Avenue in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Established in 1644, the 2.5 acres site is Gloucester's oldest burying ground. It once stood at the heart of the Gloucester settlement, and was for 80 years its only cemetery. The property is roughly hexagonal, with a narrow strip of land to provide access from Centennial Ave. Grave markers span a remarkable 295 years, from at least 1661 (though this marker is a reproduction) to 1956. The 650 marked graves do not follow any formal plan of organization. The cemetery was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. It is not well maintained.

Oak Grove Cemetery

The Oak Grove Cemetery is a historic cemetery, founded in 1854, which is bounded by Derby, Washington, and Grove Sts., and Maplewood Avenue in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The cemetery was founded by a group of local businessmen who sought to establish a cemetery in the then-fashionable rural cemetery style. They hired landscape architects Robert Morris Copeland and Horace William Shaler Cleveland to lay out a series of winding lanes. The Bradford Chapel was built through a bequest by George R. Bradford, another local businessman, and built in 1903-04. The cemetery is still privately owned, and has grown over time to occupy 11 acres . The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Adventure

The 1926 schooner Adventure is one of the last of the famous Grand Banks fishing schooners of Gloucester, Massachusetts. She is one of only two knockabout (schooners having no bowsprit) fishing schooners surviving. Adventure was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1994.

The Central Gloucester Historic District encompasses the historic commercial, civic, and residential core of the fishing community of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Now largely defined by 19th century architectural trends, it includes the city's commercial downtown , its civic heart on Dale and Prospect Streets, and some adjacent residential areas. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

East Gloucester Square Historic District

East Gloucester Square Historic District is a historic district encapsulating the evolutionary history of the active maritime community of Gloucester, Massachusetts, over a period of more than 200 years. East Gloucester is located on the south side of Gloucester's Inner Harbor, opposite the city's main downtown area. The district is essentially linear in character extending along East Main Street between Rocky Neck Avenue and Montgomery Place, with a southward extension along Highland, Chapel, and Plum Streets to Mount Pleasant Avenue. East Main Street was formally laid out in 1704 to East Gloucester Square (its junction with Highland Street), and provides access to numerous waterfront facilities, including stone wharves and 19th century ship building and repair facilities. Housing is set on the roads leading up the hill from East Gloucester Square, and is generally densely set Greek Revival or Italianate in style, reflecting the dominant period of the area's development, the mid-to-late 19th century. Higher style residences were placed on larger lots on Mount Pleasant Avenue. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Babson-Alling House

The Babson-Alling House is a historic colonial house at 245 Washington Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The 2,5 story Georgian house was built in 1740 by William Allen, and remains one of Gloucester's finest houses of the period. It is a typical house of the time, with a center chimney plan and a gambrel roof. The house was bought by Joseph Low in 1779; his daughter Elizabeth married Nathaniel Babson, and their son ended up inheriting the property. It remained in the Babson family into the 20th century, eventually being inherited by Low descendant Elizabeth Alling. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. Davis-Freeman House

The Davis-Freeman House is a historic house at 302 Essex Avenue in Gloucester, Massachusetts. In 1709 Jacob Davis acquired a grant of land at the head of the Little River, and by 1712 he had built this house and a mill on it. The house is a 2.5 story plank construction set on slightly more than 1.5 acres . It has had a few 20th century additions, and underwent a restoration in the 1930s that was relatively sensitive to historical accuracy for the time. For most of the 18th century the house was used as a hostel and tavern. In 1860 it was purchased by Robin Freeman, an escaped slave, and it remained in the Freeman family until 1929. It was then purchased by Peter Keffer, who undertook the restoration of the property. It now serves as part of a homeless shelter. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Dyke-Wheeler House

The Dyke-Wheeler House is a historic colonial house at 144 Wheeler Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The 2-1/2 story plank-framed First Period house was built in about 1720, and has a typical center chimney plan. The leanto section was added c. 1800. The house was at one time believed to have been built earlier, in the 1660s, by a man named Richard Dyke. The house was later owned by the Wheeler family for whom Wheeler's Point, where the house is located, is named. It is one of two First Period houses surviving on Wheeler's Point. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Edward Harraden House

The Edward Harraden House is a historic house at 12—14 Leonard Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It was built on land purchased by Edward Harraden in 1656, who is presumed to have built the house not long afterward. It was one of the early houses in the development of Annisquam village. It is a 2.5 story seven bay colonial with an off-center central chimney. The oldest portion of the house is the second through fourth bays from the left; the interior sections to the right of the chimney was added sometime before 1765. The house was afterward further extended by one bay on each side. The only clear evidence of its First Period origins is in the attic, or is covered over by the walls. The house was built in 1660 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Ella Proctor Herrick House

The Ella Proctor Herrick House is a historic house at 189 Concord Street in the rural western part of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The oldest portion of this First Period house was built in the late 17th century; a brick found during in the central chimney bears the date 1672. The left side of the 2.5 story center chimney saltbox shows clear evidence of 17th century construction methods, and includes a rare example of a segmentally arched interior door frame. The structure to the right of the chimney was added in the 18th century, and there were some early 20th century additions. The central chimney is also a 20th-century replacement. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Fitz Henry Lane House

The Fitz Henry Lane House is a historic house at 8 Harbor Loop Road, on the harbor side of Rogers Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The three story stone Gothic Revival building was built in 1849 by the artist Fitz Henry Lane, and was his home until his death in 1865. The building now sits in a municipal park, and has a commanding view of the harbor. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970. At that time, it was known as the "Fitz Hugh Lane House," but the Register changed the name in 2010.

George O. Stacy House

The George O. Stacy House is a historic house at 107 Atlantic Road in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The elaborate Colonial Revival house now serves as part of the Bass Rocks Inn. It was built in 1899 for George O. Stacy, a leading Gloucester real estate developer and hotel operator, and designed by Phillips & Halloran. Although it was apparently built for Stacy and his wife to live in, they never did so because his wife objected to its remote location and seasonal isolation. Stacy ended up using it as a rental property. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Norwood-Hyatt House

The Norwood-Hyatt House is a historic house at 704 Washington Street in the Gloucester, Massachusetts. It is notable as one of the oldest houses in Gloucester, and for its association with Alpheus Hyatt, who did research in marine biology here before establishing the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole. The oldest part of the house is estimated to have been built in 1664 for Francis Norwood, a mariner and early settler of Gloucester. It remained in the hands of Norwood family descendants until 1879, when Cape Ann Bank took the house by foreclosure. It was acquired that year by Audella Hyatt, wife of Alpheus Hyatt. In 1880 Hyatt used the property as a base for marine research, but abandoned that use, finding it unsuitable, after one season. It was owned by descendants of the Hyatts until 1987. The construction history of the house has not been researched in detail. It is a 2.5-story wood frame structure, with its earliest framing members showing evidence of 17th century construction methods. It was repeatedly expanded, particularly during the Norwood family's ownership, to reach its present configuration. The main block of the house is five window bays wide, and there is a two-story ell added on to the west side (probably in the early 19th century), and several shed-style additions on the northwest part of the house. The foundation is mainly mortared stone, but the eastern wall is made of brick. The interior of the house has significant features that remain from the 17th and 18th centuries. Many original fireplaces and mantels survive, although most of the fireplaces have been covered over. There are wide pine floors, and the walls and woodwork show many examples of 18th and 19th century construction techniques. Many of the walls were painted with artwork, largely by Audella Hyatt. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Puritan House

The Puritan House is a historic hotel building at 3 Washington Street and 2 Main Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It was the first brick building to be built in the city. It was built in 1810 form James Tappan, a schoolteacher from New Hampshire who once had Daniel Webster as a student. Tappan operated Tappan's Hotel on the premises, and it served as a major social center for the community. Later owners also operated it as a hotel space, including one who gave it the name "Puritan House". It now houses other businesses. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and was included in the Central Gloucester Historic District in 1982.

Webster-Lane House

The Webster-Lane House is a historic house at 304 Main Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The two story wood frame Greek Revival house was built sometime before 1845, when it first appears on city maps. It was occupied by Nathaniel Webster, a hotel proprietor and ice dealer, between at least 1851 and 1860. It was also occupied, from at least 1869 until 1900, buy Samuel R. Lane, a major merchant and shipper of fish products. Some of the house's Greek Revival features, most notably its columned porch, are unique in the city. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Whittemore House

The Whittemore House is a historic First Period house at 179 Washington Street in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It is estimated to have been built around 1700, based on an analysis of its framing and construction methods, and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the city. It is a two story wood frame building with a two story shed-style addition on the rear, and a single story addition on the right side. When first built, it consisted of two rooms with a chimney on the right; two more rooms were added in the First Period timeframe to the right of the chimney, nearly centering it in the house. The original chimney has since been removed. The house is also notable for its occupation by artist Fitz Hugh Lane, who used the left side room as his studio for a time. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Hammond Castle

Hammond Castle is located on the Atlantic coast in the Magnolia area of Gloucester, Massachusetts. The castle, which was constructed between 1926 and 1929, was the home and laboratory of John Hays Hammond, Jr. He was an inventor who was a pioneer in the study of remote control and held over four hundred patents. The building is composed of modern and 15th-, 16th-, and 18th-century architectural elements and sits on a rocky cliff overlooking Gloucester Harbor. At present, the castle operates as the Hammond Castle Museum, displaying Hammonds collection of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance artifacts as well as exhibits about his life and inventions. The Great Hall contains a huge pipe organ which has been used for concerts and recordings by many famous organists including Richard Ellsasser and Virgil Fox. Unfortunately the organ is no longer functional. Tours are self-guided, and visitors may explore eight living areas, an inner courtyard, two towers and the Great Hall. The castles lawn overlooking the harbor serves as a location outside of museum hours for weddings and various other private functions. For the past 25 years, the castle has run a special Halloween-themed haunted house tour every October. Volunteers for the production include high school students from Cape Ann . The Halloween fundraiser attracts thousands of visitors per year.

Stage Fort Park

Stage Fort Park is a park in Gloucester, Massachusetts. It features two beautiful beaches, a large playground, picnic benches, two baseball fields, a basketball court, a dog park and plenty of room for any weekend activities. There is also a seasonal restaurant in the park, The Cupboard of Gloucester, selling a wide variety of food and ice cream including fried clams and sandwiches. The most prominent geological feature is a large rock, some sixty feet high and two hundred wide. It was an ancient ritual stone used by Native Americans.
