Mann Wildlife Learning Museum

Montgomery Zoo is a 40-acre zoo located on the north side of Montgomery, Alabama. The zoo is an independent city department, and is aided by The Montgomery Area Zoolocal Society. It is home to approximately 750 animals representing 140 species. It is an accredited member of the Zoological Association of America and participates in twenty-one Species Survival Plans. In 2007, the zoo was home to the first African elephant birth in Alabama. In 2013, the first Indian rhinoceros ever conceived by artificial insemination was born at the zoo. The Mann Wildlife Learning Museum opened in January 2003. The museum features taxidermy displays with a focus on native wildlife, game species, and resource management.

Alabama Shakespeare Festival

The Alabama Shakespeare Festival is among the ten largest Shakespeare festivals in the world. The festival is permanently housed in the Carolyn Blount Theatre in Montgomery, Alabama. ASF puts on 6-9 productions annually, typically including three works of William Shakespeare. Other plays sample various genres and playwrights, classical and modern, sometimes with an emphasis on Southern works. ASFs Southern Writers Project nurtures the creation of new plays that reflect Southern themes. The festival stages more than 400 performances each year that attract more than 300,000 visitors from throughout the United States and more than 60 countries.

Alabama State Capitol

The Alabama State Capitol, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the First Confederate Capitol, is the state capitol building for Alabama. It is located on Capitol Hill, originally Goat Hill, in Montgomery. It was declared a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960. Alabama has had five political capitals during its history. The first was the territorial capital in St. Stephens in 1817, followed by the state convention in Huntsville in 1819, then the first "permanent" capital in Cahaba in 1820. It was then moved to Tuscaloosa in 1826, until coming to rest in Montgomery in 1846. The current structure is the states fourth purpose-built capitol building, with the first at Cahaba, the second at Tuscaloosa, and the last two in Montgomery. The first capitol building in Montgomery, located where the current building stands, burned after only two years. The current building was completed in 1851, although additional wings were added over the course of the following 140 years. The current capitol building temporarily served as the Confederate Capitol while Montgomery served as the first political capital of the Confederate States of America in 1861, before being moved to Richmond, Virginia. Meeting in the Senate Chamber, the Provisional Constitution of the Confederate States was drawn up by the Montgomery Convention on February 4, 1861. The convention also adopted the Permanent Constitution here on March 11, 1861. Over one hundred years later the third Selma to Montgomery march ended at the front marble staircase of the Capitol, with the marches and events surrounding them directly leading to the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Architecturally, the building is Greek Revival in style with some Beaux-Arts influences. The central core of the building, as well as the east wing to the rear of the structure, is three-stories over a below-grade basement. The north and south wings are two-stories over a raised basement. The front facade that is seen today is approximately 350 feet wide and 119 feet tall from ground level to the top of the lantern on the dome.

First White House of the Confederacy

The First White House of the Confederacy was the executive residence of President Jefferson Davis and family while the capital of the Confederate States of America was in Montgomery, Alabama. Completely furnished with original period pieces from the 1850s and 1860s, the 1835 Italianate-style house is open to the public. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1974 and the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage since 2012. In February 1861, shortly after selecting Davis as president, the Provisional Confederate Congress, meeting in Montgomery, authorized the leasing of an executive mansion. An offer came from Colonel Edmund S. Harrison of nearby Prattville, Alabama, who had recently purchased a newly renovated house in Montgomery that had previously been owned by a series of prominent citizens of the city. He offered to rent the house fully furnished and staffed for $5,000 per year. The house served as the first White House of the Confederacy from February 1861 until late May 1861, when the Confederate capital moved to Richmond, Virginia. During that time, the White House was the setting for many lavish parties and receptions hosted by Mrs. Davis.

Alabama Governor's Mansion

The Alabama Governors Mansion is the official residence of the Governor of Alabama and the governors family in Montgomery, the capital city of Alabama. The current Governor of Alabama, Robert J. Bentley, and his wife, Dianne Bentley, are the current residents. The original governors mansion for Alabama was occupied from 1911 until 1950, when the current mansion was acquired. The current mansion was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 3, 1972.

Greyhound Bus Station

The Greyhound Bus Station at 210 South Court Street in Montgomery, Alabama, was the site of a violent attack on participants in the 1961 Freedom Ride during the Civil Rights Movement. The May 1961 assaults, carried out by a mob of white protesters who confronted the civil rights activists, "shocked the nation and led the Kennedy Administration to side with civil rights protesters for the first time." The property is no longer used as a bus station, but the building was saved from demolition and its facade has been restored. The site was leased by the Alabama Historical Commission and a historical marker was located in front of the building. In 2011, a museum was opened inside the building, and it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum won a national preservation award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2012.

Alabama Department of Archives and History

The Alabama Department of Archives and History is the official repository of archival records for the U.S. state of Alabama. It was created by an act of the Alabama Legislature on February 27, 1901 with a primary mission of collecting and preserving artifacts relating to the history of the state. It was the first publicly funded, independent state archives agency in the United States. It subsequently became a model for the establishment of archives in other states. Today the agency identifies, preserves, and makes accessible records and artifacts significant to the history of the state and serves as the official repository for records created by Alabamas state agencies.

Dunn–Oliver Acadome

The Dunn–Oliver Acadome is a 7,400-seat multi-purpose arena in Montgomery, Alabama. Opened in 1992, it is home to the Alabama State Hornets basketball team of Alabama State University. From its opening until May 2008, it was named the Joe L. Reed Acadome, after Dr. Joe L. Reed, who played a significant, high profile leadership role at ASU. In 2008, the Alabama State Board of Trustees voted to remove Reeds name from the building, based upon claims that Reed gave the university negative publicity and wasted taxpayer money by filing too many frivolous lawsuits. The trustees renamed the court in honor of the universitys two most successful basketball coaches, Charles Johnson "C.J." Dunn and James V. Oliver. This furthered a debate between members of the board and Reeds supporters. In the 2009 legislative session, two legislators filed bills to restore Reeds name to the building, but both were withdrawn.

New ASU Stadium

The New ASU Stadium on the campus of Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama is a 26,500-seat stadium that replaces the Cramton Bowl as the host venue for the Alabama State Hornets football team. The first game in the New ASU Stadium was the 89th Turkey Day Classic on November 22, 2012 in which the Hornets hosted the Tuskegee Golden Tigers. The game was a sell-out and was televised nationally on ESPNU. Unfortunately for the Hornets, they lost the first ever game in their new stadium 27-25 due to a late two-point conversion by Tuskegee. The stadiums current capacity sits at 26,500 but the project was designed to allow for future expansion that can expand the capacity to 55,000.

Dexter Avenue Baptist Church

Dexter Avenue Baptist Church is a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. The church was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1974. In 1978 the official name was changed to the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who helped to organize the Montgomery Bus Boycott in the churchs basement. The church is located steps away from the Alabama State Capitol.

Garrett Coliseum

The Garrett Coliseum is a 12,500-seat multi-purpose arena in Montgomery, Alabama, USA. The arena is the centerpiece of the Alabama Agricultural Center, home to the Alabama National Fair. It was built in 1951 and named after W. W. Garrett, the first chairman of the Alabama Agricultural Board. The coliseums first event was a concert by Hank Williams. From 2005 until 2007, it was home to the Montgomery Bears of the American Indoor Football Association. The arena contains 8,500 permanent seats and can seat up to 10,500 for end-stage shows, 12,500 for boxing, wrestling and center-stage concerts. The Garrett Coliseum Complex is also home to the official state horse show, the Alabama Open Horsemans Association State Championship Horse Show, which is held every year on Labor Day Weekend. Garrett Coliseum is unique among indoor arenas for its bandstand which is located at the coliseums stage end. The Coliseum also contains a 33,600-square-foot arena floor. Adjacent venues in the Alabama National Fairgrounds include the Crawford Arena with 26,243 square feet of space; Teague Arena with 7800 square feet of space; a 14,400-square-foot Exhibit Building, and the 10,500-square-foot Homer Lewis Building.

St. John's Episcopal Church is a historic Gothic Revival church in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. It was designed by the New York architectural firm of Frank Wills and Henry Dudley. The church was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on 24 February 1975.

Gay House

The Gay House was a historic Queen Anne style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story frame building was built by the Hugger Brothers Construction Company in 1900 for Charles Linn Gay. Gay, born on November 8, 1862, was a Montgomery businessman. He died on July 4, 1928. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 15, 1975. It was mostly destroyed by fire in October 2007 and the remnants were sold for architectural salvage in July 2011.

First Baptist Church

The First Baptist Church on North Ripley Street in Montgomery, Alabama, is a historic landmark. Founded in downtown Montgomery in 1867 as one of the first black churches in the area, it provided an alternative to the second-class treatment and discrimination African-Americans faced at the other First Baptist Church in the city. It also had a role in the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. In the first few decades after its establishment the First Baptist Church became one of the largest black churches in the South, growing from hundreds parishioners to thousands. Almost a hundred years later, in the 1950s and 1960s, it was an important gathering place for activities related to the civil rights movement, and became associated with the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Freedom ride of May 1961. The church was listed by the Alabama Historical Commission on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on May 5, 2000.

Mount Zion AME Zion Church

The Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, also known as the Mount Zion AME Zion Church Memorial Annex, is a historic church in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. Located on 467 Holt Street, it was built in 1899 and extensively remodeled in 1921. In 1955 the Montgomery Improvement Association, who organized the Montgomery Bus Boycott, was formed in the building. During the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965, marchers rested at the church on their way to the Capitol. It is included on the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. The congregation moved to a new location in 1990, and on November 4, 2002, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The sides of the building are decorated with murals depicting Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, and the Selma to Montgomery marches.

Old Ship African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church

Old Ship African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Montgomery, Alabama. It is the oldest African American church congregation in the city, established in 1852. The current Classical Revival-style building was designed by Jim Alexander and was completed in 1918. It is the fourth building the congregation has erected at this location. Scenes from the 1982 television movie, Sister, Sister, were shot at the church. It was placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on March 3, 1976 and the National Register of Historic Places on January 24, 1991.

Agudath Israel Etz Ahayem

Agudath Israel Etz Ahayem is a Conservative Jewish congregation located at 3525 Cloverdale Road in Montgomery, Alabama. Agudath Israel was established as an Orthodox synagogue in 1902 by Yiddish speaking Ashkenazi Jews, recent Eastern European immigrants who rejected the Reform practices of Montgomery's established Congregation Kahl Montgomery/Temple Beth Or. After renting quarters for a number of years, the congregation purchased its first permanent building on Monroe Street in 1914, and constructed a new building at McDonough and High Street in 1928. Agudath Israel came to national attention in 1955 because of the Civil rights movement activism of then-rabbi Seymour Atlas, who eventually left the synagogue as a result of it. In 1957 it constructed its current building on Cloverdale Road, and joined the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, though it subsequently hired several Orthodox rabbis. Cynthia "Cyndie" Culpeper became Agudath Israel's rabbi in 1995, the first Conservative woman rabbi in Alabama, but left in 1997 to seek treatment for AIDS, the result of an accidental needle prick while working as a nurse. Etz Ahayem, was established in 1912 by Ladino speaking Sephardi Jews, particularly from Rhodes. The congregation grew slowly, and completed construction of its first building in 1927. In 1962 the congregation moved to a new building, but by the 1990s it had dwindled, as children of congregants moved away from Montgomery, and the synagogue had difficulty finding rabbis to lead it. The congregations merged in 2001, and adopted the current name. In 2007 Scott Kramer became Agudath Israel Etz Ahayem's third rabbi since the merger. As of 2015, Kramer was the rabbi and Joy Blondheim was the president.

Alabama State University Historic District

The Alabama State University Historic District is a 26-acre historic district at the heart of the Alabama State University campus in Montgomery, Alabama. It contains eighteen contributing buildings, many of them in the Colonial Revival style, and one site. The district was placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on August 25, 1994 and the National Register of Historic Places on October 8, 1998.

Frank M. Johnson

The Frank M. Johnson, Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse is a United States federal building in Montgomery, Alabama, completed in 1933 and primarily used as a courthouse of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Alabama. The building is also known as United States Post Office and Courthouse--Montgomery and listed under that name on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1992, it was renamed by the United States Congress in honor of Frank Minis Johnson, who had served as both a district court judge and a court of appeals judge. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2015.

Cassimus House

The Cassimus House is a historic Queen Anne style house at 110 North Jackson Street in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story frame house was completed in 1893. It is the last residential structure remaining in its city block. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 13, 1976.

Edgewood

Edgewood, also known as the Thomas House, is a historic Federal-style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story frame building was built in 1821 by Zachariah T. Watkins. It is the oldest surviving residence in Montgomery. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 24, 1973.

Gerald-Dowdell House

The Gerald-Dowdell House is a historic Italianate style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story frame and masonry raised-cottage was built in 1854-55 for Perley and Camilla Gerald. Perley Gerald was born in New York and migrated to Alabama in 1829. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 28, 1980. It was extensively restored in 2000 and now houses the law offices of Wilkerson and Bryan, P.C.

Gov. Thomas G. Jones House

The Governor Thomas G. Jones House is a historic Victorian-style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story frame building was built in 1855. It is best known as the residence of Thomas G. Jones, Alabama's 28th Governor. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 8, 1978.

Jefferson Franklin Jackson House

The Jefferson Franklin Jackson House, commonly known as the Jackson-Community House, is a historic Italianate-style house in Montgomery, Alabama. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on July 21, 1978 and to the National Register of Historic Places on May 17, 1984.

McBryde-Screws-Tyson House

The McBryde-Screws-Tyson House, also known as the Tyson House, is a historic Greek Revival style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story frame building was completed in 1855. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 28, 1980.

The Murphy House is a historic Greek Revival style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The two-story masonry building was built for John H. Murphy, a Virginia cotton and slavery merchant who owned a large warehouse at 122 Commerce Street, Montgomery, where slave traders in the 1850s confined slaves until they could be sold at auctions. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 24, 1972.

Patrick Henry Brittan House

The Patrick Henry Brittan House, also known as the Brittan-Dennis House, is a historic Italianate style house in Montgomery, Alabama. The one-story brick house was completed in 1858 by Patrick Henry Brittan, 10th Secretary of State of Alabama. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 13, 1979. The building is located at 507 Columbus Street.

Stone Plantation

The Stone Plantation, also known as the Young Plantation and the Barton Warren Stone House, is a historic Greek Revival-style plantation house and one surviving outbuilding along the Old Selma Road on the outskirts of Montgomery, Alabama. It was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on September 28, 2000 and to the National Register of Historic Places on December 31, 2001.

Winter Place

Winter Place is a historic complex of two conjoined houses and three outbuildings in Montgomery, Alabama. The buildings were constructed from the 1850s through the 1870s. The Italianate style North House was built in the 1850s and was the home of the Joseph S. Winter family. The Second Empire style South House was built in the 1870s and was the home of Winter's daughter, Sally Gindrat Winter Thorington, and her husband, Robert D. Thorington. Joseph S. Winter's first house in Montgomery was designed by Samuel Sloan in 1851 and it is believed by architectural historians that Sloan designed Winter Place as well. Following several decades of neglect, the property was placed on the Alabama Historical Commission's Places in Peril list in 2004. It was purchased in 2006 by Craig Drescher, who is stabilizing and restoring the structures. The complex was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on September 29, 2005 and to the National Register of Historic Places on May 31, 2006.

Montgomery Union Station

Montgomery Union Station and Trainshed is a historic former train station in Montgomery, Alabama. Built in 1898 by the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, rail service to the station ended in 1979 and it has since been adapted for use by the Montgomery Area Visitor Center and commercial tenants. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973 and became a National Historic Landmark in 1976.
