Top Attractions in Irving

University of Dallas

Established in 1956, the University of Dallas is a private, independent Catholic regional university located in Irving, Texas that is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. According to U.S. News World Report, 80% of 2010 graduates participated in international programs, which is the sixth highest percentage of students from any higher education institution in the US to study abroad. The university comprises four academic units: the Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts, the Constantin College of Liberal Arts, the College of Business ],) which includes the Graduate School of Management, and the School of Ministry. Dallas offers several masters degree programs and a doctoral degree program with three concentrations. There are 136 full-time faculty and 102 part-time faculty, and the school has an 11:1 student-to-faculty ratio.

Irving Arts Center

The Irving Arts Center, located in Irving, Texas, is a 10-acre art center that caters to all ages within the community. The center contains over 91,500 square feet of performing and visual arts space which includes a 3,800 square-foot Main Gallery. The Main Gallery host over 20 exhibits throughout the year. In 2007, the art center became an affiliate with the Smithsonian Institution, which makes the Irving Arts Center one out of 160 Smithsonian Affiliates nationwide. The 10-acre center features theaters, classrooms, reception halls, a sculpture garden and other areas for the community. Irving Arts Center features four galleries that are free and open to the public. They host a variety of artwork from local and regional artists, along with traveling shows from the Smithsonian Museum and other affiliates around the country.

North Irving Transit Center

North Irving Transit Center is a bus-only station located along Northwest Highway in Irving, Texas . It is joined with the Las Colinas Urban Center and Irving Convention Center Stations as the DART Orange Line light rail line opened in July 30, 2012. Upon the opening of said light rail system, North Irving Transit Center was closed off and all routes are modified/diverted to Las Colinas Urban Center and University of Dallas Stations. However, it reopened on December 3rd. Throughout the Transit Center's dormancy, its parking lot remained available for customers taking the Orange Line light rail service from Irving Convention Center Station. Access to the station platform is available via a walkway and pedestrian crossing under Northwest Highway. There had been talks of reopening North Irving Transit Center as a Bus Plaza connecting Irving Convention Center Station sometime in December 2012. This was reached as a goal to improve transfer opportunities between Irving/Las Colinas buses as well as bus/rail connections. With that said, a number of routes were relocated from Las Colinas Urban Center Station to the Irving Convention Center Station and/or the North Irving Transit Center. Some of these routes will connect Irving Convention Center Station and the North Irving Transit Center directly, and customers will have an option to either walk or take a bus for this connection.

AT&T Byron Nelson

The AT&T Byron Nelson is a golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is hosted by the Salesmanship Club of 600-member civic organization, and has benefited the Club's nonprofit Momentous Institute since its inception. The tournament is held in May at the Four Seasons Resort and Club Dallas at Las Colinas in Irving, Texas, U.S. It is one of two PGA tournaments held in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex – the only metropolitan area to host two PGA tournaments. The tournament is the leading fundraiser for charity on the PGA Tour and has raised more than $143 million. For much of its history, it was the only PGA Tour stop named after a professional golfer; it remains one of only two such events, along with the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Nelson commonly made an appearance during the tournament. It is organized by the Salesmanship Club of Dallas. For the tournament's first several decades, it was played at a variety of courses in Dallas. Byron Nelson was the tournament's first winner in 1944, when it was played at Lakewood Country Club. The following year it was played at Dallas Country Club, and then in 1946 moved to Brook Hollow Golf Club. For the better part of the next decade the event was not contested, until two iterations of it were held in 1956, both at Preston Hollow Country Club. In 1957 the event moved to Glen Lake Country Club before it began a decade-long relationship with Oak Cliff Country Club from 1958–67. In 1968, forty-eight years ago, the event was renamed the Byron Nelson Golf Classic and its name, through a series of sponsors, has always subsequently been in conjunction with Nelson's name. That same year the event moved to Preston Trail Golf Club, where it was played through 1982. The event then moved to venues in Irving: Las Colinas Sports Club and TPC at Las Colinas . Beginning in 1994 the tournament was played at two courses, the Tournament Players Course and the Cottonwood Valley Course, both located at the Four Seasons. Previously only the TPC was used, but since the tournament was played in May (during the height of the North Texas storm season), the weather played havoc with the tournament in some years, causing several delays and shortened tournaments. Therefore, the decision was made to add the Cottonwood course in order to shorten the amount of time needed to complete the first two rounds. The first two rounds were played on both courses (each player played one round on each course); after the cut was determined, the TPC is used exclusively for the final two rounds. However, in 2008 the tournament reverted to using only the TPC course, which was significantly renovated. Hewlett-Packard (HP) bought the previous title sponsor, Electronic Data Systems (EDS) in mid-2008. The agreement ran through 2014, with AT&T becoming the title sponsor beginning in 2015. In 2019, the tournament will move from the Four Seasons course in Irving to the yet-built Trinity Forest Golf Course in Dallas.

Mustangs at Las Colinas

Mustangs at Las Colinas is a bronze sculpture by Robert Glen, that decorates Williams Square in Las Colinas in Irving, Texas. It is said to be the largest equestrian sculpture in the world. The sculpture commemorates the wild mustangs that were historically important inhabitants of much of Texas. It portrays a group at 1.5 times life size, running through a watercourse, with fountains giving the effect of water splashed by the animals hooves. The horses are intended to represent the drive, initiative and unfettered lifestyle that were fundamental to the state in its pioneer days. The work was commissioned in 1976 and installed in 1984. SWA Groups design created a shallow watercourse extending 400 feet from northeast to southwest across Williams Square, a gently sloping granite-paved open space about 300 feet square. The plaza setting for the sculpture won a National Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects. The buildings around the square rise 358 feet on the north and 217 feet on the east and west sides, with the south side open to OConnor Boulevard. The sculpture is substantial, but the scale of the surrounding structures keeps it from dominating the space. The Mustangs of Las Colinas Museum is located adjacent to the sculpture, in East Tower at Williams Square Plaza. The museum features exhibits and a film about the works creation, as well as additional sculptures by Robert Glen. Beginning July 30, 2012, the DART Orange Line extends to the Las Colinas Convention Center and the 503 circulator bus begins operation and it will be possible to visit the site without a car, by walking or biking from a bus stop.

North Lake College

North Lake College is a community college that is part of the Dallas County Community College District and is located in the Las Colinas area of Irving, Texas between MacArthur Boulevard and Walnut Hill Lane. The school opened in 1977 and features an enrollment of about 5,000 credit students and an additional 3,000 continuing education students. In 2012 a Dallas Area Rapid Transit train station opened on North Lake's central campus, connecting it to downtown Dallas, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, and Dallas Love Field on the Orange Line. In 2005 the college purchased a 35.8-acre tract of land in Coppell, Texas as the site of a satellite campus, which opened in 2008 as North Lake College North Campus. The North Campus location in far northwestern Dallas County pulls students not only from Dallas County, but also from neighboring Tarrant County and Denton County. The North Campus is also home to the college's logistics technology program. North Lake College South Campus was opened in fall 2009 and is located on the northeast corner of Shady Grove and MacArthur Boulevard in Irving, with the primary purpose of providing educational opportunities for those in need of basic academic skills, language acquisition, and job competencies in the under-served areas of South Irving. The college's specialties include logistics technology, sciences, and the arts, with plays and fine arts shows throughout the school year. North Lake's monthly student newspaper, the News-Register, has won multiple national awards for college publications. North Lake College should not be confused with North Lakes State College in Queensland, Australia.

B. H. Carroll Theological Institute

B. H. Carroll Theological Institute is an accredited Christian Baptist institution in Irving, Texas with multiple sources of funding and a self-perpetuating board of governors. It is named after Benajah Harvey Carroll and teaches Baptist principles and practices. It operates in cooperation primarily with Baptist churches, and also cooperates with other Great Commission Christians. The institution offers classes in both conventional classroom settings and by innovative means. It trains students in "“teaching churches” located in multiple Texas cities, as well as through interactive lessons taught over the Internet", with 20 such "teaching churches" in operation throughout Texas as of November 2006. The school plans to focus on the use of distance education to make it easier for students to obtain theological education. As of 2006, the school's second year of operation, B. H. Carroll Theological Institute has 300 students taking courses they hope will lead to seminary degrees and an additional 300 students auditing courses. Bruce Corley was Carroll's first president; Gene Wilkes is Carroll's second president. In January 2007, the Institute was certified to grant degrees by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, and was later exempted from such certification through a ruling of the Texas State Supreme Court. In late February 2012, B. H. Carroll Theological Institute received accreditation status from the Association for Biblical Higher Education . Carroll is listed among Institutions and Programs accredited by recognized U.S. Accrediting Organizations by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation(CHEA).
