Hadwen Arboretum

Hadwen Arboretum is an arboretum in Worcester, Massachusetts. Located in Worcesters West Side, it is owned and protected by nearby Clark University. The arboretum was bequeathed to Clark by Obadiah Hadwen for historical and ecological purposes upon his death in 1907. A 1978 report by Clark students cataloged 40 different types of trees in the area.

EcoTarium

The EcoTarium is a science and nature museum located in Worcester, Massachusetts. Previously known as the New England Science Center, the museum features several permanent and traveling exhibits, the Alden Planetarium, a narrow-gauge train pulled by a scale model of an 1860s steam engine, a tree canopy walkway, and a variety of wildlife.

Bancroft Tower

Salisbury Mansion and Store

The Salisbury Mansion and Store is an historic house museum at 40 Highland Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. The house was built in 1772 by Stephen Salisbury with an attached storehouse from which he sold imported goods. In 1820 the store was closed down, and the space was converted for residential use by the family, which occupied it until 1851. Thereafter it served as a girls school, tenant house, and then a gentlemans social club until 1929, when the building was donated to the American Antiquarian Society, which promptly gave it to the Worcester Art Museum. The museum moved the house to its present location to make way for the Worcester Lincoln Square Boys Club in 1929. It was leased to a nonprofit, and eventually acquired by the Worcester Historic Museum in 1985. The museum undertook to restore the much-altered building to its condition as of 1830, and opened it as a museum. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

Worcester Historical Museum

The Worcester Historical Museum, located in downtown Worcester, Massachusetts, was founded in 1875 as the Worcester Society of Antiquity. This museum is the only institution devoted entirely to local history and artifacts. The scope of their collection ranges from colonial to twentieth-century, encompassing manuscripts, textiles, paintings, and ceramics. The museum is made up of permanent and temporary exhibits, research library, and currently owns and operates the local Salisbury Mansion.

South Unitarian Church

The South Unitarian Church is an historic church building at 888 Main Street in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester, Massachusetts. The Romanesque Revival building was designed by Earle & Fisher and was built by the Norcross Brothers in 1894 for the South Unitarian Society, established in 1890. The building is made of sandstone blocks, laid in courses alternating in width. The front facade features a high pitched gable, with two rows of three windows, then a pair of windows topped by a large half-round window To the right is the church entrance, a smaller projecting gable section with a doorway recessed in a round archway, topped by three smaller windows. To the rear behind the entrance is a square tower with a partial half-round side tower. On March 5, 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as South Unitarian. At the time of its listing it housed an Armenian Apostolic congregation; it presently houses a Spanish Seventh Day Adventist Congregation.

Quinsigamond State Park

Quinsigamond State Park is a Massachusetts state park comprising two day-use areas along the western shore of Lake Quinsigamond in the city of Worcester. The Regatta Point area is across North Lake Avenue from the University of Massachusetts Medical School, north of Route 9. The Lake Park area is south of Route 9. The park is managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

DCU Center

The DCU Center is an indoor arena and convention center complex located in downtown Worcester, Massachusetts. The facility hosts a variety of events, including concerts, sporting events, family shows, conventions, trade-shows and meetings. It is owned by the City of Worcester and managed by SMG, a private management firm for public assembly facilities. The naming rights were purchased in 2004 by Digital Federal Credit Union and went into effect January 2005.

Hart Center

The Hart Recreation Center is the main athletic center at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was built in 1975 and is home to the Holy Cross Crusaders athletic teams. It is named for the Rev. Francis J. Hart, S.J., the guiding force behind intramurals at Holy Cross for more than 40 years. The basketball arena seats 3,600, and has hosted the Patriot League mens basketball tournament numerous times. The hockey rink seats 1,400 and hosts the Division I mens hockey team and the Division III womens hockey team, which was formed in 1998. The rink also was the site of the 1999 and 2002 MAAC hockey championships. It also contains a swimming pool, rowing tanks, and racquetball squash courts. In 1997, the Carol Park B. Smith Wellness Center was opened as an addition to the building, and houses strength and conditioning facilities.

Worcester Corset Company Factory

The Worcester Corset Company Factory is an historic factory building at 30 Wyman Street in Worcester, Massachusetts in the Main South neighborhood. The oldest part of the factory was built in 1895, with expansion of the facilities taking place up to 1909. The buildings were designed by Arthur Gray for the Worcester Corset Company, whose origins date to an 1861 business by David Hale Fanning making hoops for skirts, but shifted to manufacturing corsets after fashions changed. Fanning's business was immensely successful, and he became one of Worcester's larger employers. After the Corset Company folded in 1940, the facility was used to manufacture military-style boots. The factory was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Elm Park (Worcester, Massachusetts)

Elm Park is an historic park in Worcester, Massachusetts. The land the park resides on was purchased in 1854, making it one of the first purchases of land to be set aside for use as a public park in the United States. Elm Park originally consisted of the land bordered by Park Avenue, Russell Street, Elm Street and Highland Street. In 1888, Newton Hill, just across Park Avenue, was purchased by the City of Worcester bringing the total park area to 60 acres . The original portion of Elm Park was, up until the 1890s merely more than pasture land. Shortly thereafter, it was redesigned and landscaped by the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted and contains meandering walking paths through the landscaping, a pond crossed by two iconic footbridges and a playground. The Newton Hill portion of Elm Park remains far less landscaped and contains basketball and tennis courts, walking trails and also Doherty Memorial High School, a high school within the Worcester Public Schools system. St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral is located adjacent to the park on Russell Street. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Green Hill Park

Green Hill Park is a large public park in Worcester, Massachusetts. The largest in the city, the park covers over 480 acres . It is home to the Massachusetts Vietnam Veterans' Memorial, which honors veterans of the Vietnam War from Massachusetts. The Memorial was opened in June 2002. It is home to the Green Hill Park Shelter, an historic building on the National Register of Historic Places.

University Park (Worcester, Massachusetts)

University Park, also called Crystal Park, is a public park in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester, Massachusetts. The 13-acre park was acquired by the city from 1887 to 1889, costing nearly 62,000 dollars. It is located across Main Street from Clark University, thus the name. University Park Campus School, a local nearby high school run by Clark and the city, is named after the park. On September 20, 2010, Clark University announced a "20-year voluntary Payment in Lieu of Taxes agreement" with the City of Worcester, with some of the funds going directly to improvements in University Park. On March 24, 2011, the $1.5 million park redevelopment project was formally announced, and residents were informed that there would be a several-month-long community engagement and participatory planning process.

Elias Crawford House

The Elias Crawford House is an historic octagon house located at 3 Norwood Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is one of two such houses in the city. The house was built sometime in the 1850s for an unknown owner; its first owner of record was Elias Crawford, a textile manufacturer, in 1870. It is a two story frame house, with a wraparound porch, supported by chamfered posts, covering a portion of the first floor. A service wing was added to its rear in the 19th century, and there is a stable on the property that appears to date to the time of the house. The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Richard Barker Octagon House

The Richard Barker Octagon House is a historic octagon house located at 312 Plantation Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. Built sometime between 1855 and 1865, during a brief period in their popularity, it is one two octagon houses in the city, and a relatively rare instance of one built using Orson Squire Fowler's recommended gravel wall technique. On March 5, 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Woodland Street Firehouse

The Woodland Street Firehouse is an historic fire station at 36 Woodland Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is one of the finest of Worcester Victorian-era firehouses. The two story brick building was built in 1886 in a Queen Anne style, with some Romanesque details. It is nearly identical to Worcester's Cambridge Street Firehouse; both were designed by Fuller & Delano and built the same year. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. It is no longer used as a firehouse. Engine 10 ran out of this station until 1979 when it moved to Park Ave until the company was eliminated in 2009.

Stearns Tavern

Stearns Tavern is a historic tavern at 651 Park Avenue in Worcester, Massachusetts. The building is one of the best extant examples of vernacular Federal style architecture in the city. Its construction is dated to c. 1812 based on 19th-century historical sources, and it was suggested that its frame may be even older, based on analysis conducted during a 1974 move of the building. The building is a two story timber frame house, with a two story ell on the northeast. The front door is a distinctive six-panel door, flanked by sidelights and topped by a fanlight. Originally located at 1030 Main Street, it was moved in 1974 to its present location and converted for use as a bank. Restoration done at the time exposed Federal style details that had been covered over in the intervening years. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts

The Hanover Theatre for the Performing Arts in Worcester, Massachusetts, United States was originally built in 1904 as the Franklin Square Theatre regularly scheduling burlesque shows, Broadway touring shows and headline acts transitioning to showing silent films by 1912 when vaudeville magnate Sylvester Poli purchased the theatre from the estate of Pauline L. Taylor.

Worcester Palladium

The Worcester Palladium, also known as The Palladium or Palladium Theatre, is an all-ages concert hall and performance venue located in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Palladium was designed by architect Arlan W. Johnson and opened as a theatre in 1928 as the Plymouth Theatre. It was renamed the E.M. Loew's Center for the Performing Arts on April 14, 1980. It has a seating capacity of 2,160 in the Main Room and 500 in the upstairs room. Typically it holds shows for metal and rock bands. In July 2012, owners John Fischer and John Sousa filed a waiver to Worcester's demolition delay ordinance after receiving an increase in the Palladium's property taxes. Artists that have performed at the theater include: Jerry Garcia Band, Gov't Mule, Logic, Blink-182, Evanescence, Fall Out Boy, Four Year Strong, My Chemical Romance, Jimmy Eat World, Chelsea Grin, Wiz Khalifa, Rob Zombie, Kanye West, Ensiferum, King Diamond, Nightwish, Sonata Arctica, Straight Line Stitch, Periphery, Protest the Hero, Twelve Foot Ninja, Suicide Silence, Whitechapel , and more. Since 1990, the booking agency MassConcerts has handled all booking for the Palladium.

Emmanuel Baptist

Emmanuel Baptist or the Main Street Baptist Church is a historic Baptist church building at 717 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is the only example of Norman Style architecture in the city. The brick church was built in two parts: the chapel was built in 1853, and the main church body was built in 1855. The elements characteristic of this particular style include recessed wall paneling, the corbelled roofline, buttresses, and the recessed entry framed by an arch. The church was built for the Third Baptist congregation, which merged with the First Baptists in 1902, at which time the building was sold to the First Presbyterian Church of Worcester. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Holy Name of Jesus Complex

The Holy Name of Jesus Complex is an historic religious complex on Illinois Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. It consists of four main buildings, a church, rectory, convent, and school. It was the third Roman Catholic parish established in the city to serve its French Canadian population, and was a significant work of a Canadian-born Worcester architect, O. E. Nault. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. The first building of the complex to be completed was the school, begun in 1893 an dedicated in 1898. It is a three story brick building, with projecting entry bays at its ends. It underwent some alterations in 1926, but its Romanesque Revival styling is still evident in the round entry arch and other details. The church, although it was also begun in 1893, was not finished until 1916. It is also a brick structure, with granite trim elements providing contrasting details. The church facade is flanked by a pair of buttressed towers, which have been topped by parapets. Windows and doorways on various elevations are in characteristic Romanesque round arch forms. The Convent of St. Anne was built 1922-24, and is a three story brick Georgian Revival structure. It has a hip roof above an elaborately detailed Classical cornice, and its entrance is sheltered by a barrel-roofed portico. The rectory was also begun in 1922, and completed in 1928. It is a two story brick building also in Georgian Revival styling, with a Classical frieze and cornice, and porches sporting Ionic columns.

Mission Chapel

The Mission Chapel is an historic church at 205 Summer Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. A rare example of the early Victorian Norman styling, it was built by Ichabod Washburn in 1854, and is one of the city's oldest church buildings. The exterior side walls are divided into bays separated by piers which rise to a layer of corbelling, with a second layer of corbelling just below the eave. The main facade is divided into three bays, with arched windows in the gable. The Evangelical City Missionary Society, for whom the chapel was built, was established by a group of local Protestant congregations as a missionary site for serving the city's poor and needy. The building was rented out for commercial purposes during the mid-20th century, but has otherwise been used for religious and missionary purposes. The chapel was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Pilgrim Congregational Church

Pilgrim Congregational Church is a historic Congregational church building at 909 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. The brick Romanesque Revival building was constructed in 1887 to a design by local architect Stephen Earle. The buildings windows and other details are trimmed in sandstone, and a tower with projecting rounded corners rises from one corner. It features an open belfry with round-arch openings and is capped by a steeply pitched roof, with decorative finials at the corners. The church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

St. John's Catholic Church

St. John's Catholic Church, established in 1834, is an historic Roman Catholic parish church in Worcester, Massachusetts. It is the oldest established Catholic religious institution in the city, and the oldest Catholic parish in New England outside of Boston. On March 5, 1980, its 1845 church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

St. Mark's Episcopal Church

St. Mark's Episcopal Church is an historic Episcopal church building at 6 Freeland Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. The Romanesque Revival stone building was designed by local architect Stephen C. Earle, and built in 1888 for a congregation established the preceding year. On March 5, 1980, the church building was added to the National Register of Historic Places as St. Marks. The current minister is Rev. Donald F. Chamberlain.

St. Matthew's Episcopal Church

St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church is an historic stone Episcopal church building located at 693 Southbridge Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. Designed by Stephen Earle of Earle and Fisher in the Gothic Revival style of architecture with some Romanesque details, it was built in 1894 by the Norcross Brothers. Construction of the church was funded in part by Matthew Whittall, proprietor of the Whittall Mills. It was the first Episcopal church in Worcester. On March 5, 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as St. Matthews.

St. Peters Catholic Church

St. Peter's Catholic Church is a historic church building at 935 Main Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. Built in 1884, the church is one of the city's finest and most ornate examples of Gothic Revival architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Union Congregational Church

The Union Congregational Church or Chestnut Street Congregational Church is a historic Congregational church building at 5 Chestnut Street in Worcester, Massachusetts. The church is a well-preserved local example of Victorian Gothic Revival styling. Its basic appearance is reminiscent of the Notre Dame de Paris, although on a more modest scale. The building was designed by Earle & Fisher and construction took place between 1895 and 1897. Its main facade features twin towers flanking an entrance consisting of three trefoil arches, above which is a large rose window and an arched arcade connecting the two towers. The upper levels of the towers are open areas surrounded by paired narrow pointed-arch openings, and are decorated by crenellations and gargoyles. The main body of the church is covered in a slate roof (original replaced in 1948), and the stained glass of some of its windows was brought over from the buildings of other church congregations which merged into the Union congregation. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.

Congregation Beth Israel

Congregation Beth Israel is an egalitarian Conservative congregation located at 15 Jamesbury Drive in Worcester, Massachusetts. Founded in 1924 as an Orthodox synagogue, it formally affiliated with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism in 1949, and describes itself as the "leading Conservative congregation in Central Massachusetts." The congregation first worshiped at a house on Pleasant Street; it constructed a synagogue building in its place in 1941. It completed its current location on Jamesbury Drive in 1959. The congregation hired its first permanent rabbi in 1938. Subsequent rabbis have included Israel Chodos , Herbert Ribner , Abraham Kazis , Baruch Goldstein , and Jay Rosenbaum . In 1994, the synagogue and Rosenbaum were the subject of the book And They Shall be My People: An American Rabbi and His Congregation by Paul Wilkes. Joel Pitkowsky succeeded Rosenbaum as rabbi in 2003. Pitkowsky left in 2011 and was succeeded by Rabbi Steven Schwarzman. Rabbi Schwarzman left in 2014 and was succeeded by Rabbi Aviva Fellman.

Temple Emanuel Sinai

Temple Emanuel Sinai is a medium-sized Reform Jewish synagogue located in Worcester, Massachusetts, New England's second largest city . A product of the 2013 integration of Worcester's two original Reform congregations (Temple Emanuel and Temple Sinai), the synagogue traces its roots to 1921 and is affiliated with the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), a network of over 900 progressive congregations representing the largest denomination of affiliated American Jews. The congregation worships and studies in a pair of buildings at 661 Salisbury Street, adjacent to the Worcester Jewish Community Center, where Temple Sinai acquired property for its permanent home in 1962. Temple Emanuel's building at 280 May Street was sold to the Worcester State University Foundation in 2013, though the terms of the sale allowed the congregation to use the building for two additional years, until June 2015. Planning to determine a final siting for the synagogue concluded during the fall of 2014, resulting in a plan to expand and renovate the Temple Sinai facility at 661 Salisbury Street (rather than share a campus with Conservative Congregation Beth Israel at Beth Israel's location on Jamesbury Drive). Temple Emanuel Sinai's first rabbi, Matthew Berger, also served as the last rabbi of Temple Emanuel, who hired him in 2009. In February 2014, Rabbi Valerie Cohen, spiritual leader since 2003 at Jackson, Mississippi's Beth Israel Congregation accepted an offer to replace Berger at the end of his contract in June 2014. A near-unanimous vote in favor of ratifying Rabbi Cohen's contract was held during a special congregational meeting at the May Street campus on March 9, 2014.
