Martinsburg

Martinsburg Station is a railway station in Martinsburg, West Virginia, United States, served by Amtrak and MARC. The station also included the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad roundhouse, and Martinsburg Shops. Located on the mainline of CSX, Martinsburg Station sits among the citys many cultural and historic destinations. The station is a restored 1848-1876 railroad hotel and its sympathetic modern train station addition at 229 East Martin Street in Martinsburg. It is also a contributing property to the Baltimore and Ohio and Related Industries Historic District. The station has seen many events historic to Berkeley County and the nation. In 1863, the hotel witnessed the destruction of the BO Roundhouses and shops by General Stonewall Jackson and was also the site of the first national labor strike. Martinsburg Station is the portal to the states first Civil War Trail and the Gettysburg Campaign: General Robert E. Lees army retreated through Martinsburg two blocks west following the "high-water mark of the Confederacy."

Wheeling

Wheeling is a city in the State of West Virginia and is the county seat of Ohio County, but it also has some subdivisions in Marshall County. Located along the Ohio River in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Wheeling was originally a settlement in the British colony of Virginia and later an important city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Wheeling was the first state capital of West Virginia. Thanks to its location along major transportation routes, including the Ohio River, National Road, and the BO Railroad, Wheeling became a manufacturing center in the late nineteenth century. After experiencing the closing of factories and substantial population loss following World War II, Wheelings major industries now include healthcare, education, law and legal services, entertainment and tourism, and energy. Wheeling is the county seat of Ohio County and the principal city of the Wheeling Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, the Wheeling, WV MSA had a population of 147,950, and the city had a population of 28,486.

Charleston

Charleston is the capital and largest city of the State of West Virginia. It is located at the confluence of the Elk and Kanawha Rivers in Kanawha County. As of the 2013 Census Estimate, it had a population of 50,821, while its metropolitan area had 224,743. It is a center of government, commerce, and industry. Early industries important to Charleston included salt and the first natural gas well. Later, coal became central to economic prosperity in the city and the surrounding area. Today, trade, utilities, government, medicine, and education play central roles in the citys economy. The first permanent settlement, Ft. Lee, was built in 1788. In 1791, Daniel Boone was a member of the Kanawha County Assembly. Charleston is the home of the West Virginia Power minor league baseball team, the West Virginia Wild minor league basketball team, and the annual 15-mile Charleston Distance Run. Yeager Airport and the University of Charleston are also located in the city. West Virginia University and the WVU Institute of Technology, Marshall University, and West Virginia State University also have higher education campuses in the area. Charleston is also home to McLaughlin Air National Guard Base of the West Virginia Air National Guard. The city also contains public parks, such as Cato Park and Coonskin Park, and the Kanawha State Forest, a large public state park that sustains a pool, camping sites, several biking/walking trails, picnic areas, as well as several shelters provided for recreational use.

Huntington

Huntington is a city in the State of West Virginia. A major river port, the city is in Cabell and Wayne counties at the confluence of the Guyandotte River and the Ohio River. The first permanent settlement, Holderbys Landing, was founded in 1775 in what was then the Colony of Virginia. The City of Huntington was founded as the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway in 1871. It serves as the county seat of Cabell County. As of the 2010 census, the metropolitan area is the largest in West Virginia. It spans 7 counties across 3 states, with a population of 364,101. Huntington is the largest city in the MSA and the second largest city in West Virginia, with a population of 49,138 at the 2010 census. The Huntington-Charleston TV market is the 64th-largest in the nation. The city is the home of Marshall University as well as the Huntington Museum of Art; the Big Sandy Superstore Arena; the Huntington District-U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; the Collis P. Huntington Historical Society and Railroad Museum; Camden Park, one of the worlds oldest amusement parks; the headquarters of the CSX Transportation-Huntington Division, the largest division in the CSX network; and the Port of Huntington-Tristate, the largest river port in the United States. The largest employers are Marshall University, Cabell Huntington Hospital, St. Mary’s Medical Center, CSX Transportation, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Amazon, DirecTV, and the City of Huntington. The 2006 Warner Bros. motion picture We Are Marshall and the 2010 ABC series Food Revolution were filmed in Huntington.

Romney

Romney is a city in and the county seat of Hampshire County, West Virginia, USA. The population was 1,940 at the 2000 census, while the area covered by the citys ZIP code had a population of 5,873. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. Originally settled in 1725 by hunters and traders, Romney was known as Pearsalls Flats and was the site of the French and Indian War stockade Fort Pearsall. Romney is the oldest town in West Virginia, chartered December 23, 1762. Named for the Cinque Ports town of Romney, Kent, England by Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron, the town still bears placenames and symbols from its colonial past such as its Marsham Street, named for Robert Marsham, 2nd Baron Romney. It is also home to the West Virginia Schools for the Deaf and Blind and the nations First Confederate Memorial in Indian Mound Cemetery.

Berkeley Springs

Berkeley Springs is a town in, and the county seat of, Morgan County, West Virginia, USA, in the state's Eastern Panhandle. While the area was part of Virginia , the town was incorporated as Bath. Since 1802, it has been referred to by the name of its original Virginia post office, Berkeley Springs. The population of the town was 624 at the 2010 United States Census. The town is located within the Hagerstown-Martinsburg, MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area. Berkeley Springs is a sister city to Bath, Somerset, England. The area contains mineral water springs that were frequented by Native Americans indigenous to the area, possibly for thousands of years. After settlement by Europeans, the mineral springs drew many visitors from urban areas. Notable colonial visitors to the area included George Washington and James Rumsey. Berkeley Springs remained a popular resort area during the early years of the United States. It is the home of the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting, the longest running and largest such event in the world. The area continues to be a popular resort area with tourism the main industry in the county and four full-service spas using the mineral water. A historic building whose construction began in 1888, was built as a retreat for Rosa and Samuel Taylor Suit, and it overlooks the town . It often is called "Berkeley Castle". Berkeley Springs is a noted arts community with working artists accounting for approximately 1% of the county population of 16,000. Since 1994, the town has been listed in all four editions of John Villani's "100 Best Art Towns in America" (one of only 11 towns so rated).

Williamson

Williamson is a city in Mingo County, West Virginia, United States, along the Tug Fork River. The population was 3,191 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Mingo County, and is the countys largest and most populous city. Williamson is home to Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. The Tug Fork River separates Williamson from South Williamson, Kentucky. Williamson is the site of a large rail yard built by the former Norfolk and Western Railroad, which was built to service the many coal mines of the region. The city is protected by a floodwall, completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1991 in response to devastating floods along the Tug Fork River in 1977 and again in 1984. The wall incorporates floodgates along major access points which, when locked, form a solid barrier against floodwaters. There have only been two uses of the gates thus far: the first occurring in 2002 during a major flood in the region, and the second occurring in 2003, when only two lower lying gates were closed in anticipation of rising water levels. The local economy is largely fueled by coal mining, transportation, health care and retail.

Pence Springs

Pence Springs is an unincorporated community in Summers County, West Virginia, United States. It lies along the Greenbrier River to the east of the city of Hinton, the county seat of Summers County. Its elevation is 1,539 feet , and it is located at 37°40′41″N 80°43′30″W . Although it is unincorporated, it had a post office, with the ZIP code of 24962 until it was closed in October 2011. Once a hot spot for travelers, Pence Springs is now a quiet community home to a large flea market, which is held in the area that was once used as the bottling facility by Andrew Pence. The water that flows from the spring won awards at the St Louis Expo in 1904. In 1918 Pence built a 3 story brick hotel above the spring. It attracted tourists and those wishing to visit the spring. The hotel was used as a state women's prison through the fifties, sixties and seventies. The old resort is currently being occupied by the Greenbrier Academy for Girls. The Pence Springs Hotel Historic District is a national historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Throughout the years several other hotels/hostels and boarding homes were built, none of which stand any longer. Across the Greenbrier River was the stock yards and the train station combination, that used to be as busy as nearby Hinton. Train service stopped in 1952. There is a small grass landing strip known as the Hinton-Alderson Airport.

Hinton

Hinton is an Amtrak station in Hinton, West Virginia, served by the Cardinal. The station is a former Chesapeake and Ohio Railway depot, and is located in the Hinton Historic District. Constructed in 1905, the brick building includes wood canopies supported by heavy brackets featuring a wood-fan pattern trim. A December, 2007, fire damaged the building, but it reopened a short time later following repairs. The depot is currently undergoing a $1.5 million series of phased repairs and renovations. Work in the early phases included installation of a new slate roof, re-pointing of the brickwork and repairs to the windows and decorative woodwork. A new concrete platform with tactile edging was also installed. Due to a bend in the adjacent New River, eastbound trains actually head southwest when passing the station .
