Olympic Stadium

The Stadium at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, commonly known as the Olympic Stadium, is a stadium located in Stratford, London, England. It is located at Marshgate Lane in Londons Stratford district in the Lower Lea Valley. It was constructed primarily to serve as the host stadium for the 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, where it hosted the track and field events, along with its opening and closing ceremonies. The stadium is located 6.5 miles from Central London, but six minutes away from the London St. Pancras rail station via Stratford International Highspeed rail services. The stadium is currently under renovation, having been closed since 2013 for transformation works. Once re-opened in 2016, it will have a standard capacity of 54,000 and will be the long-term home of West Ham United Football Club and British Athletics. As part of the renovation, the lower seating bowl will be replaced with a retractable seating system allowing for acceptable seating for both Athletics and Pitch sports. In 2015 the Stadium will be temporarily reopened as a host of several 2015 Rugby World Cup matches, individual rugby matches, the Race of Champions and the three-day Anniversary Games athletics event. The stadium will also host both the 2017 IAAF World Championships in Athletics and the 2017 IPC Athletics World Championships, the first time both events have been held in the same location consecutively. Land preparation for the Stadium began in mid-2007, with the official construction start date on 22 May 2008, although piling works for the foundation unofficially began four weeks ahead of that date. The stadium held its first public event in March 2012, serving as the finish line for a celebrity running event organized by the National Lottery. The stadium had a capacity of 80,000, making it the third-largest stadium in England behind Wembley and Twickenham.

Eton Manor

Eton Manor is a former sports and leisure venue in Leyton, London Borough of Waltham Forest. It is in the northernmost venue of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and remains as a permanent venue as part of the 2012 Olympic legacy. It is now known as Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre and is made up of four indoor and six outdoor tennis courts and two state-of-the art hockey pitches. During the 2012 Summer Olympics, Eton Manor housed temporary training pools for participants in aquatics events, including three 50m pools for swimmers, and smaller pools for synchronised swimmers and water polo competitors. For the 2012 Summer Paralympics it hosted the wheelchair tennis, with nine competition courts and four courts for warm-up. There were a total of 10,500 seats for spectators, with a 5,000-capacity centre court. The site covers 27 acres within Lee Valley Regional Park and is owned and run by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority. Conversion work started after the end of the London 2012 Paralympic Games and Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre will be opened to the public on 21 June 2014. A range of events and programmes, from grassroots to elite will be held at the venue.

Hackney Wick

Hackney Wick is an area straddling the boundary between the London Borough of Hackney and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, in east London. It is an inner-city development situated 5 miles northeast of Charing Cross. West of its broad area, and with greater tube access, lies Hackney Central, the historic centre of Hackney Borough. It is in the far east of the borough and it is at the southern tip of Hackney Marshes and includes part of 2012 Olympic Park west of the River Lea, and forms part of the Lower Lea Valley. Here it abuts the Waltham Forest and the London Borough of Newham and the district extends southwards beyond the Overground line and the boundary with the Tower Hamlets. West of the old River Lea The Lee Navigation, here called Hackney Cut meets the Hertford Union Canal.

ArcelorMittal Orbit

The ArcelorMittal Orbit is a 114.5 metre tall sculpture and observation tower in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, London. It is Britains largest piece of public art, and is intended to be a permanent lasting legacy of Londons hosting of the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, assisting in the post-Olympics regeneration of the Stratford area. Sited between the Olympic Stadium and the Aquatics Centre, it allows visitors to view the whole Olympic Park from two observation platforms. Orbit was designed by Turner-Prize winning artist Sir Anish Kapoor and Cecil Balmond of engineering Group Arup. Announced on 31 March 2010, it was expected to be completed by December 2011. The project came about after Mayor of London Boris Johnson and Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell decided in 2008 that the Olympic Park needed "something extra". Designers were asked for ideas for an "Olympic tower" at least 100 metres high, and Orbit was the unanimous choice from proposals considered by a nine-person advisory panel. The project was expected to cost £19.1 million, with £16 million coming from Britains richest man, the steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, Chairman of the ArcelorMittal steel company, and the balance of £3.1 million coming from the London Development Agency. The name "ArcelorMittal Orbit" combines the name of Mittals company, as chief sponsor, with "Orbit", the original working title for Kapoor and Balmonds design. Kapoor and Balmond believe that Orbit represents a radical advance in the architectural field of combining sculpture and structural engineering, and that it combines both stability and instability in a work that visitors can engage with and experience via an incorporated spiral walkway. It has been both praised and criticised for its bold design. It has also been criticised as a vanity project, of questionable lasting use or merit as a public art project. The ArcelorMittal Orbit closed after the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, while the South Plaza area of the Park underwent reconstruction. It re-opened to the public on 5 April 2014. The structure is being re-purposed to become the the worlds longest slide, expected to be completed in 2016.

Pudding Mill Lane DLR station

Pudding Mill Lane is a station on the Docklands Light Railway in directly next to the Stratford district of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in the London Borough of Newham, Greater London. It opened in 1996 on the road of the same name, in a light industrial area. It is next to the Olympic Park; however, it was closed for the duration of the 2012 Olympic Games and reopened on 12 September 2012. The original island platform station was permanently closed on 18 April 2014 in order to allow for the construction of a ramp from the new Crossrail portal nearby. A new, larger station built a short distance to the south opened on 28 April 2014. The station is located on the DLR's Stratford branch, between the Bow Church and Stratford stations and is on the boundary between Travelcard Zone 2 and Zone 3.

Stratford International station

Stratford International station is a main line railway and Docklands Light Railway station located in Stratford in the London Borough of Newham in east London, United Kingdom. The station opened on 30 November 2009 for Southeastern services on High Speed 1, although the station building was completed in April 2006. The station is managed by Southeastern, who operate all trains serving it. It is located on the eastern edge of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, adjacent to the subsequently opened Westfield Stratford City shopping centre. On 31 August 2011 an extension of the Docklands Light Railway was opened to connect the station directly to the wider London public transport network and Stratford station slightly to the south. The DLR station is physically separate, across the road from the High Speed 1 station. Oyster Cards are valid for travel at the DLR station, and at the High Speed 1 station but at a special fare. The four-platform station is built within Stratford Box, a 1.1-kilometre concrete-sided cutting.

Stratford station

Stratford station is a large multilevel railway station in Stratford, east London. The station is served by National Rail services operated by Abellio Greater Anglia, TfL Rail, London Overground and c2c, by London Undergrounds Central and Jubilee lines, and by the Docklands Light Railway . Stratford is in London Travelcard Zone 3, and Network Rail owns the station. To distinguish it from Stratford-upon-Avon, this station is called Stratford by National Rail, and is sometimes referred to as Stratford Regional to distinguish it from Stratford International station some 1,210 feet away. The station served as a key arrival point for the London 2012 Summer Olympics and Paralympics. The mainline station, in terms of arrivals and departures, handles over 25 million passengers a year, making Stratford the ninth busiest station in London and the twelfth busiest within the UK.

Hackney Marshes

Hackney Marshes is an area of grassland on the western bank of the River Lea in the London Borough of Hackney. It was incorporated into the Lee Valley Park in 1967. It was originally a true marsh, but was extensively drained from Medieval times, and rubble was dumped here from buildings damaged by air raids during World War II. The principal area of the marsh lies below Lea Bridge Road between the Old River Lea, and the Hackney Cut – an artificial channel of the Lee Navigation, dug about 1770, to avoid a loop in the natural watercourse. The southern extent is marked by the A12; although the industrial land around Hackney Wick Stadium was originally an extension of the marsh, it now forms a part of the Olympic Park for the 2012 Summer Olympics. Hackney Marsh is one of the largest areas of common land in Greater London, with 136.01 hectares of protected commons.

Water Polo Arena

The Water Polo Arena was a venue of the 2012 Summer Olympics held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012. It is situated in the south-east corner of the Olympic Park, alongside the Aquatics Centre, and opposite the Olympic Stadium on the opposite bank of the Waterworks River. Construction on the temporary structure began in spring 2011. During the Olympics, the 5,000-seat arena hosted both the men's and women's water-polo competitions, and contained both a warm-up pool and a 37-metre competition pool. The Aquatics Centre and Water Polo Arena are adjacent to each other in one of the most compact areas of the park. To make the best use of the space available, some back-of-house facilities, such as space for broadcasters, catering and security were shared between the two venues. The first dedicated water-polo venue to be built for an Olympics, the structure will be taken down after the games. Elements of the venue are expected to be reused or relocated elsewhere. Parts of the roofing covers and membranes of different temporary venues of the building will be recycled via Vinyloop. This allows to meet the standards of the Olympic Delivery Authority, concerning environmental protection. Through this recycling process, the Olympic Games PVC Policy is fulfilled. It says that Where London 2012 procures PVC for temporary usage or where permanent usage is not assured, London 2012 is required to ensure that there is a take-back scheme that offers a closed loop reuse system or mechanical recycling system for post-consumer waste. London 2012 are the first Olympic Games whose guidelines include the recycling of PVC.
