Lincoln

Lincoln is a cathedral city and the county town of Lincolnshire, within the East Midlands of England. The non-metropolitan district of Lincoln has a 2012 population of 94,600. The 2011 census gave the entire urban area of Lincoln a population of 130,200. Lincoln developed from the Roman town of Lindum Colonia, which developed from an Iron Age settlement. Lincolns major landmarks are Lincoln Cathedral, a fine example of English Gothic architecture, and Lincoln Castle, an 11th-century Norman castle. The city is also home to the University of Lincoln and Bishop Grosseteste University. Lincoln is situated in a gap in the Lincoln Cliff 141 miles north of London, at an elevation of 20.4 metres above sea level by the River Witham, stretching up to 75 metres above sea level in the uphill area around the cathedral.

Sleaford

Sleaford is a market town and civil parish in the North Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, a non-metropolitan county in the East Midlands of England. It is on the edge of the fertile Fenlands, about 11 miles north-east of Grantham, 16 miles west of Boston, and 17 miles south of the city and county town of Lincoln. With an estimated resident population of 17,671 at the time of the 2011 Census, the town is the largest settlement in North Kesteven, and makes up roughly 15% of its total population. Bypassed by the A17 and the A15, it is connected to Lincoln, Newark, Peterborough and Kings Lynn. Sleaford railway station is on the Nottingham to Grantham and Peterborough to Lincoln Lines. The first settlement formed during the Iron Age where a prehistoric track crossed the River Slea. It was a tribal centre and home to a mint for the Corieltauvi during the 1st centuries BC and AD. Evidence of Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlement has been uncovered, and by the late Saxon period the town was an economic and jurisdictional centre with a court and market. During the medieval period, records differentiate between Old and New Sleaford, the latter emerging in the areas around the present day market place and St Denys Church. Sleaford Castle was constructed in the 12th century for the Bishops of Lincoln, who owned the manor. Granted the right to hold a market in the mid-12th century, New Sleaford developed into a market town and became locally important in the wool trade, while Old Sleaford declined. From the 16th century, the landowners were the Carre family, who operated tight control over the town, and it grew little in the early modern period. The manor passed from the Carre family to the Hervey family by the marriage of Isabella Carre to John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol, in 1688. The towns common land and fields were legally enclosed by 1794, giving ownership mostly to the Hervey family; this coincided with making the Slea into a canal, and heralded the first steps towards modern industry. The Sleaford Navigation brought economic growth until it was superseded by the railways in the mid-1850s. In the 20th century, the sale of farmland around Sleaford by Bristol Estates led to the development of large housing estates. The subsequent availability of affordable housing combined with the towns educational facilities and low crime rates made it an attractive destination for home-buyers. As a result, the towns population underwent the fastest growth of any town in the county during the 1990s. Sleaford was primarily an agricultural town until the 20th century, supporting a cattle market, with seed companies, such as Hubbard and Phillips, and Sharpes International Seeds, being established in the late 19th century. The arrival of the railway made the town favourable for malting. Industry has declined, and in 2011 the most common occupations are in wholesale and retail trade, health and social care, public administration and defence and manufacturing. Regeneration of the town centre has led to the redevelopment of the old industrial areas, including the construction of the National Centre for Craft Design on an old wharf.

Spalding

Spalding is a market town with a population of 28,722 on the River Welland in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire, England. Little London is a hamlet directly south of Spalding on the B1172, whilst Pinchbeck, a village to the north, is part of the built-up area. The town was well known for its annual Spalding Flower Parade, dating from 1959, which attracted many regular visitors from around the world. The parade celebrated the regions vast tulip production and the cultural links between the Fens and the landscape and people of South Holland. At one time, it attracted crowds up more than 100,000, but attendance decreased to fewer than 40,000 in 2012. That year, two local councils announced they would no longer fund the parade, and the 2013 parade was the last. Since 2002 the town has held an annual Pumpkin Festival in October.

Grantham

Grantham is a market town within the South Kesteven district of Lincolnshire, England. It bestrides the London to Edinburgh East Coast Main Line railway and the River Witham, and is bounded to the west by the A1 main north-south road. Grantham is about 26 miles south of the city and county town of Lincoln, and about 24 miles east of the city of Nottingham. The resident population at the 2001 Census was 34,592 in about 18,000 households, excluding the adjacent village of Great Gonerby. The town is best known as the birthplace of former prime minister Margaret Thatcher, and the place where Isaac Newton went to school, at The Kings School. It is close to an ancient Roman road, and was the scene of Oliver Cromwells first advantage over Royalists during the English Civil War at Gonerby Moor. Grantham is also notable for having the first female police officers in the United Kingdom, notably Edith Smith in 1914, and producing the first running diesel engine in 1892, and the UKs first tractor in 1896.

Saltfleetby St. Clement

Saltfleetby is a village and civil parish in the East Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is on the coast of the North Sea, approximately 7 miles east from Louth and 10 miles north from Mablethorpe. The village had a population of 599 in the 2001 Census, decreasing to 568 at the 2011 Census. Until 1999, the village comprised three parishes, Saltfleetby St Peter, Saltfleetby All Saints and Saltfleetby St Clement, each one centred on the church that gave it its name. However, the village has operated as one entity for many years. The hamlet of Three Bridges is south of Saltfleetby St Peter. A section of the village seashore is part of the Saltfleetby-Theddlethorpe Dunes National Nature Reserve, which has sea dunes and both saltwater and freshwater marshes. The reserve is one of only five places in the UK where the natterjack toad is found. Saltfleetby Gas Field, north of North End Lane, is part of the neighbouring village of South Cockerington. Saltfleetby has a village hall, The Prussian Queen public house, and fishing lakes with a campsite. The village school is Saltfleetby C of E Primary School.

South Killingholme

South Killingholme is a village and civil parish in North Lincolnshire, England. The parish was predominately agricultural and sparsely populated and the village small until the 1960s when industrialisation of the south humber bank took place throughout area northwest of Grimsby within the parish of South Killingholme the Humber Oil Refinery was built in the late 1960s. At the same time the village greatly expanded reaching near its present scale by the early 1970s. The expansion of the Port of Immingham westwards encroached on the parish from the 1970s onwards, mainly due to the Immingham Bulk Terminal and later Immingham Gas Jetty ; in 2004 a 730MW powerstation Conoco Philips Power Station was built alongside the refinery. As of 2006 the land area of the parish consists of an approximately 50:50 split of heavy industry petroleum storage, refining and power generation; and agricultural land. South Killingholme is the only village in the parish and is located roughly in the centre of area.

Stow

Stow (or archaically, Stow-in-Lindsey) is a small village and civil parish within the West Lindsey district of Lincolnshire, England. It is 11 miles (18 km) north-west of the city of Lincoln and 6 miles (10 km)) south-east of Gainsborough, and has a total resident population of 355, increasing to 365 (& including Thorpe in the Fallows) at the 2011 census. The parish of Stow, which extends to include other localities such as Coates-by-Stow, is today a mixture of modern brick and older stone built housing, some of the latter being thatched. The village has a public house, the Cross Keys, a Methodist chapel, and the remains of a large minster church. There is another Stow in Lincolnshire, the site of a lost village and medieval fair, between Threekingham and Billingborough. The location is now known as Stow Green Hill. There is also Shepeau Stow near Spalding.
