Alabama Museum of Natural History

The Alabama Museum of Natural History is the states natural history museum, located in Smith Hall at the University of Alabama campus in Tuscaloosa. The oldest museum in the state, it was founded in 1831. The exhibits depict the natural diversity of Alabama from the Age of Dinosaurs, the Coal Age, and the Ice Age. Collections include items relating to geology, zoology, mineralogy, paleontology, ethnology, history, and photography. The Grand Gallery Exhibition Hall houses a replica of a Basilosaurus cetoides, an Eocene whale that has been designated as the State Fossil. Exhibits of special interest include the skull of an American mastodon dredged from the Tombigbee River near Demopolis and the Hodges meteorite. The latter hit a woman as it fell to earth near Sylacauga on November 30, 1954. The museum sponsors expeditions throughout the year, as it has since 1979.

Bryant–Denny Stadium

Bryant–Denny Stadium, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States, is the home stadium for the University of Alabama football team. The stadium opened in 1929 and was originally named Denny Stadium in honor of former University of Alabama president George H. Denny. The stadiums name was amended to Bryant–Denny Stadium in 1975 after the Alabama legislature chose to honor famed Alabama coach Paul "Bear" Bryant. It has a seating capacity of 101,821, and is the fourth largest stadium in the SEC, the eighth largest stadium in the United States and the tenth largest stadium in the world.

University of Alabama Arboretum

The University of Alabama Arboretum is a 60 acre arboretum located near the intersection of Veterans Memorial Parkway and Pelham Loop Road in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The Arboretums primary emphasis is on Alabamas native flora and fauna. It includes 2.5 miles of walking trails through native piney woods and oak-hickory climax forest, a wildflower garden containing more than 250 species, ornamental plants, an experimental garden, a bog garden, an open-air pavilion, and a childrens garden. Two greenhouses contain collections of orchids, cacti, and tropical plants. The Arboretum is open daily without charge from sunrise to sunset, except for a few major holidays. It is part of the University of Alabama Museums, which also include the Alabama Museum of Natural History, Gorgas House, Moundville Archaeological Museum, the Office of Archaeological Research and Paul W. Bryant Museum.

NorthRiver Yacht Club

NorthRiver Yacht Club is a private golf club in Tuscaloosa, Alabama which officially opened in 1978. The course was originally designed by professional golfer Gary Player but was redesigned in 1997 by noted architect Bob Cupp. The course features bent grass and is set up to both challenge expert players while being forgiving to beginners still new to the game. In September 2012 Honours Golf acquired management rights of NorthRiver Yacht Club from The Westervelt Company. The signature hole at NorthRiver is the 17th, which is a par 3 hole featuring a green on a peninsula, surrounded on three sides by water. Besides golf, NorthRiver offers several amenities. The Paul W. Bryant Museum is located on the campus of the University of Alabama, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Founded in 1985, the museum was opened in 1988 to "house the history of Alabama football, with special emphasis on the legendary coach" Bear Bryant.

Battle-Friedman House

The Battle Friedman House is an antebellum town home located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The house was built in 1835 by Alfred Battle and his wife, Millicent Battle. The houses grounds include the only remaining documented antebellum garden in the state, the house itself is noted for its vernacular use of monumental boxed columns. The Battle family lived in the house until 1875, when the home was purchased by Bernard Friedman. The Friedman family continued to reside in the house until Victor Hugo Friedman died in 1965, leaving the house to the city of Tuscaloosa. The Tuscaloosa County Preservation Society currently maintains the house as a historic house museum. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion

The Jemison-Van de Graaff Mansion is a historic house in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States. The structure remained a private residence until 1955, when it served first as a library, then publishing house offices, and lastly as a historic house museum. The mansion was added to National Register of Historic Places on April 19, 1972, due to its architectural significance.

Old University of Alabama Observatory

The Old University of Alabama Observatory, now known as Frederick R. Maxwell Hall, was an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Although no longer used as an observatory, the building has been restored and preserved. It currently houses the universitys Creative Campus, an organization dedicated to building a collaborative environment between students, faculty, and the community. Significant for its architectural and historical importance, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 1972.

Dr. John R. Drish House

The Dr. John R. Drish House, also known simply as the Drish House, is a historic plantation house in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, United States. It is considered by state preservationists to be one of the most distinctive mixes of the Greek Revival and Italianate styles in Alabama. First recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1934, it was added to the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on July 31, 1975, and subsequently to the states "Places in Peril" listing in 2006. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015.

Foster Auditorium

Foster Auditorium is a multi-purpose facility at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was built in 1939 as a Works Progress Administration project and has been used for Alabama basketball, womens sports, graduations, lectures, concerts, and other large gatherings, including registration. Its status as the largest indoor building on campus came to an end in 1968 with the opening of the Memorial Coliseum. The building housed the Department of Kinesiology until 2006. In April 2009, the University announced a major renovation for the auditorium. After the renovation, the Crimson Tide womens basketball and volleyball programs moved back to Foster Auditorium, their original home. The facility is named for Richard Clarke Foster, president of the University of Alabama from 1937 to 1941. The building was declared a National Historic Landmark on April 5, 2005.

Alabama Soccer Stadium

The University of Alabama Soccer Stadium was built in 2004. The complex features covered bench areas for both teams and a press box with seating for 1,500 spectators and standing room for many more. The University of Alabama soccer field was the first home of Alabama soccer and it saw its first action on Oct. 2, 1994, as Alabama played Furman University. The Tide has compiled a 109-56-11 overall record on campus and a 36-29-4 ledger since playing at the Alabama Soccer Complex. Upon the renovation of Bryant-Denny Stadium the soccer field received a new high definition scoreboard, which was previously housed in Bryant-Denny. The scoreboard is the biggest in the nation for a college soccer field.

The amphitheater is located on Jack Warner Parkway, just beside the Hugh R. Thomas Bridge; only minutes away from the University of Alabama campus and blocks from the downtown. It is the largest outdoor theater in West Alabama.

Collier-Overby House

The Collier-Overby House was built in the 1820s in Tuscaloosa, Alabama by James Walker. The colonnaded Greek Revival house was bought by Henry W. Collier, who became chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and in 1949 became the Governor of Alabama, serving two terms. Following the American Civil War the house was occupied by former Confederate General Phillip Dale Roddey. After a number of other transactions the house became the headquarters of the Associated Charities of Tuscaloosa before returning to private ownership. The two-story frame house rests on a brick foundation with a two-story columned portico across the entire front of the house. The facade under the portico is stuccoed, while the other elevations have wood siding. A small balcony with elaborate railing details covers the front door. The house and portico are capped by a hipped roof. As originally built the house was one room deep with a center hall. The Collier-Overton House was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 14, 1971.

President's Mansion

The President's Mansion is a historic Greek Revival style mansion on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It has served as the official residence of university presidents ever since its completion in 1841. The structure narrowly avoided destruction during the American Civil War, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings on campus today. The mansion was added to National Register of Historic Places on January 14, 1972, due to its architectural and historical significance.

The bathhouse and pool were added to the National Register of Historic Places on September 9, 1992, due to their architectural and historical significance.

University of Alabama Quad

The Quad is an approximately 22-acre quadrangle on the campus of the University of Alabama located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Home to most of the university's original buildings, this portion of the campus remains the geographic and historic center of the modern campus. Originally designed by noted English-born architect William Nichols, construction of the university campus began in 1828, following the move of the Alabama state capital from Cahaba to Tuscaloosa in 1826. The overall design for this early version of the campus was patterned after Thomas Jefferson's plan for the University of Virginia, with its Lawn and Rotunda. Following the destruction of the campus during the American Civil War, a new Quad emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Different in form and function from the original design of the early 19th century, the modern Quad continues to fill its role as the heart of the campus. Although completely surrounded by academic and administrative buildings, only five structures are built directly on the Quad: the Little Round House, Tuomey Hall, Oliver-Barnard Hall, Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library, and Denny Chimes. The remainder of the space is occupied by a grove of trees on the west side and a great lawn on the east. A feature on the northwestern side, known as The Mound, is the site of the old Franklin Hall. A popular gathering place, the Quad is home to pep rallies, a bonfire during homecoming, and numerous day-to-day student activities.

The Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame was founded in 1998 for the purpose of honoring Alabamians who have made significant contributions to film, television or theatre. The organization is sponsored jointly by Theatre Tuscaloosa and Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

ULM Soccer Complex

The ULM Soccer Complex was built in 2006. The complex features covered bench areas for both teams and a press box, with seating for 500 spectators and standing room for many more. ULM soccer field was the first home of ULM womens soccer and it saw its first action on Aug. 27, 2006, as ULM played McNeese State University, but lost 0-2. The Warhawks has compiled an 18-37 overall record on ULM Soccer Complex field. The soccer field received a new scoreboard in 2011, upon the other renovations. The scoreboard an led scoreboard with both teams names and period-time.

City National Bank

The City National Bank in Tuscaloosa, Alabama was designed in the Classical Revival Style by William Leslie Welton and was built in 1922. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

First African Baptist Church

First African Baptist Church is a historic church at 2621 9th Street in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It was built in 1907 from a congregation established in 1866, and was added to the National Register in 1988.

Bama Theatre

The Bama Theatre is a historic theater in Tuscaloosa, Alabama that currently serves as the city's performing arts center. Its modern redevelopment is the result of cooperation between the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa and the Tuscaloosa County Parks and Recreation Authority. The three-story brick and limestone building is located at the corner of Sixth Street and Greensboro Avenue in downtown Tuscaloosa. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 30, 1984.

In the first year, the vestry hired the architect William Nichols to design the building and oversee its construction. University of Alabama Observatory

The University of Alabama Observatory is an astronomical observatory owned and operated by the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The new domed observatory was built atop Gallalee Hall, completed in 1949. It replaced the Old Observatory, which had been in use from 1849 until the 1890s. Initially equipped with a 10-inch refracting telescope, this was the universitys primary telescope from 1950 until 2004. The old telescope was removed and then sold to an antique telescope collector to make way for the new instrument. A new 16-inch Ritchey-Chrétien reflector, manufactured by DFM Engineering, was installed in 2005.

Denny Chimes

Denny Chimes is a 115-foot tall campanile tower on the south side of The Quad at the University of Alabama, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The tower was named in honor of George H. Denny, who served as university president from 1912 to 1936 and then again in 1941. It is equipped with a 25-bell carillon. The tower is one of the most visible landmarks on campus.

Strode House

The Strode Mansion is the former residence of Hudson Strode. The residence includes the main house, a small caretaker's cabin, and a separate writing studio, as well as 27 acres of woodland. The Strodes bequeathed their residence to the University of Alabama's Department of English. The property is located at 49 Cherokee Road, Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The home was designated a historic landmark by the Alabama Historical Association in 1987. These days, it is usually occupied by the director of the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies. In the past, it was assigned to notable visiting faculty. The caretaker's cabin is occupied by a student from the University's Master of Fine Arts program.

Gorgas–Manly Historic District

The Gorgas-Manly Historic District is a historic district that includes 12 acres and eight buildings on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The buildings represent the university campus as it existed from the establishment of the institution through to the late 19th century. Two buildings included in the district, Gorgas House and the Little Round House, are among only seven structures to have survived the burning of the campus by the Union Army, under the command of Brigadier General John T. Croxton, on April 4, 1865. The other survivors were the President's Mansion and the Old Observatory, plus a few faculty residences. Woods Hall was the first building constructed following the American Civil War. The remaining five buildings, Clark, Manly, Garland, Tuomey and Barnard Halls, represent campus construction during the economic recovery that followed the end of the Reconstruction era. The construction of Manly, Clark, Garland, and other buildings was financed by the sale of a large portion of 46,800 acres of land given by the United States Congress to the University as repayment "for the fiery ruin brought by Federal troops in 1865."

University Mall

University Mall is the largest mall in western Alabama. It is located at the intersection of McFarland Boulevard and Veterans' Memorial Parkway in Tuscaloosa, the busiest in the city. Owned and managed by Montgomery-based Aronov Realty, the mall opened on August 20, 1980. Anchor stores of the 733,254 sq ft enclosed mall include J.C. Penney (99,450 sq ft (9,239 m2)), Sears (105,000 sq ft (9,800 m2)), Belk Women (82,222 sq ft (7,638.7 m2)) and Belk Men, Home & Kids (90,174 sq ft (8,377.4 m2)). The only outlier property on mall premises is a branch of Regions Bank. The property where University Mall now stands was previously home to the ruins of World War II-era Northington Naval Hospital and associated support buildings. These ruins were finally destroyed during the filming of the climactic scene of the 1978 Burt Reynolds film Hooper. The ruins of the hospital had lain derelict for many years and included a few dozen buildings as well as two immensely tall brick smoke-stacks. A few of the old barracks buildings remained until 2000; they housed the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education offices until they were relocated to the old Tuscaloosa High School building on Queen City Avenue. On April 27, 2011, the mall was damaged by a powerful tornado that ripped through Tuscaloosa killing dozens of people. The mall was directly in the path of the tornado and sustained moderate damage.

Ol' Colony Golf Complex

Ol Colony Golf Complex is a municipal public golf course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The 18-hole course opened in December 2000 on 597 acres that was once a farm plantation for a mental institution named Boys Colony. Ol Colony was designed by professional golfer Jerry Pate, who played golf for The University of Alabama. The University of Alabama made Ol’ Colony its home course and constructed a training facility, The Jerry Pate Center, on the grounds in 2005. In 2008, Golf Digest ranked Ol’ Colony as one of the Top 100 "Best Places You Can Play" and recently a "Top 10 in Alabama Course." Ol’ Colony also operates the Tuscaloosa Chapter of The First Tee program, a youth golf program designed to promote character development and life-enhancing values through the game of golf.
