Battle of Djerba

The Battle of Djerba took place in May 1560 near the island of Djerba, Tunisia in which the Ottomans under Piyale Pasha's command overwhelmed a large joint Christian Alliance fleet, chiefly Spanish, Papal, Maltese and Neapolitan forces. The allies lost 27 galleys and some smaller vessels as well as the fortified island of Jerba. This victory marked perhaps the high point of Ottoman power in the Mediterranean Sea. Until about 1573 the Mediterranean headed the list of Spanish priorities under Philip II ; under his leadership the Habsburg galley fleet increased to about 100 ships, and more in wartime. Spain sent a major fleet against the Turks in 1560, aiming for the island of Djerba off the coast west of Tripoli. The Ottoman fleet won a resounding victory, killing more than 10,000 men and sinking many vessels. However, typical of the aftermath of Mediterranean battles, they did not follow up the victory. Spain was able to rebuild its fleet in the next two years and prepared a new offensive in 1563-64 with nearly 100 ships. Despite the Ottomans being victorious in the battle, they were unable to attack the Venetian center of gravity.

Bin Qirdan

Ben Gardane or Bengardane or Benguerdene in French is a commune and coastal town in south eastern Tunisia, close to the border with Libya. There is a mixture of Amazighi and Arabs; called Twazin Alliance that took place centuries ago as a tribal defense shield against the invaders and foreign attacks, especially from the eastern side . There is no actual reference stating in which century or year this alliance had been established, but, the dwellers of Bengardane still have that specific bond and proud of that alliance. Beside the Twazin, there are other large tribes ex. Jelidat, Rabai'a which have participated in shaping the heritage, culture and way of life today in Bengardane . Bengardane has witnessed many historical events since the ancient times to our modern era. There had been a US airfield and royal air operations that helped to tilt the balance in the favor of the allies during the WWII. Ben_Gardane_Airfield The town belongs to the governorate of Medenine. Located 423 km 559 km by road from Tunis, it is the city furthest from the capital. It is the last major city in the governorate of Medenine with total population estimated at 79,912 inhabitants in 2014. It is located 32 kilometers from the Tuniso-Libyan border. It is best known both in Tunisia and Libya as a trade road and an open exchange market. Tunisians take advantage of the availability and variety of the goods existing in the shops. The great amount of these goods are basically imported from Libya and deemed less expensive. It is distinguished for its large population of dromedaries estimated at 15,000 head. An annual festival devoted to them during the month of June.
