Glenwood Canyon

Glenwood Canyon is a rugged scenic 12.5 mi canyon on the Colorado River in western Colorado in the United States. Its walls climb as high as 1,300 ft above the Colorado River. It is the largest such canyon on the Upper Colorado. The canyon, which has historically provided the routes of railroads and highways through western Colorado, currently furnishes the routes of Interstate 70 and the Central Corridor between Denver and Grand Junction. The canyon stretches from near Dotsero, where the Colorado receives the Eagle River, downstream in a west-southwest direction to just east of Glenwood Springs, on the mouth of the Roaring Fork. Most of the canyon is in Garfield County, with the upper portion near Dotsero lying in Eagle County. In 1906, the canyon provided the route of the Taylor State Road, a gravel road that was the first route for automobiles through the Colorado Rockies. The canyon also provided the route for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad in the late 19th century. Through acquisitions, the line is currently part of the Union Pacific system. As Glenwood Canyon was one of the iconic scenic views along the California Zephyr passenger train, a monument to the dome car design was originally installed in the canyon. In the 1990s the monument was relocated to the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden to make way for the construction of Interstate 70. The canyon is widely considered one of the most scenic natural features on the Interstate Highway System of the United States. Foot access to the canyon is available at four rest areas along Interstate 70 in the canyon. The Hanging Lake Rest Area provides access to the canyon along a stretch where I-70 is concealed in the Hanging Lake Tunnel. The canyon was formed relatively recently in Pleistocene time by the rapid cutting of the Colorado down through layers of sedimentary rock. The upper layers of the canyon are sandstone from Pennsylvanian and Mississippian. Sections of the lower canyon walls are made of Cambrian rock. The Mississippian layer that is prominent throughout much of the upper rim sections of the canyon is part of the Leadville Formation.

No Name

No Name is a census-designated place in Garfield County, Colorado. The population as of the 2010 Census was 123. It is located east of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, off exit 119 of Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon. It is named for No Name Creek and No Name Canyon. The No Name Tunnel of I-70 is nearby. The exit sign for No Name is visible in passing in the film Vanishing Point. When Interstate 70 in Colorado was being built, developers planned an exit at a then unnamed area. They decided to mark the exit sign "No Name" and, after the area was built up, the name stuck. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names. There are two other exits along Interstate 70 in Colorado that are nameless: Exit 218 east of Loveland Pass, and Exit 354 west of Limon - in both these instances, advance signage is marked merely with an exit number and the distance to that exit.

Glenwood Springs station

The Glenwood Springs station is a railway station in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. It is served by Amtrak's California Zephyr, which runs once daily between Chicago and Emeryville, California in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Glenwood Springs station was originally built by the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW) in 1904, and sits close to the southern bank of the Colorado River. The station is composed of brick and Frying Pan River red sandstone, while the roof line is done in a jerkinhead, or Half-hip roof style. The entrance is flanked by medieval-inspired brick towers with pyramidal roofs. The Glenwood Railroad Museum occupies the former Ladies’ Waiting Room. The station also serves as one of two Greyhound bus stops in Glenwood Springs. However, The Roaring Fork Transportation Authority city bus does not stop here. On June 7, 1977 Amtrak introduced the Pioneer, with service between Chicago and Seattle. On October 28, 1979, Amtrak initiated the Desert Wind service between Chicago and Los Angeles. Both trains serviced Glenwood Springs. In 1991, the Pioneer was rerouted through Wyoming, and no longer stopped in Glenwood Springs. Both the Desert Wind and the Pioneer were discontinued on May 10, 1997. The California Zephyr entered service on April 24, 1983, and services Glenwood Springs to this day. According to the Amtrak Fact Sheet (Colorado), Fiscal Year 2016, Glenwood Springs was the second busiest of the nine Colorado stations served by Amtrak. The station and the town feature in an episode of the BBC television series Michael Palin: Around the World in 80 Days.
