USS Razorback

USS Razorback, a Balao-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named after the razorback, a species of whale found in the far southern reaches of the Pacific Ocean. It is arguably the longest-serving submarine still existing in the world, having been commissioned by two different countries for 53 years of active duty. In 2004, the state of Arkansas adopted the submarine, although it was not named after the University of Arkansas mascot. Her keel was laid down by the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine on 9 September 1943. She was launched on 27 January 1944 along with Redfish and Ronquil. Scabbardfish was launched a few hours later, making 27 January 1944 the first and only time the US Navy has launched four submarines at one shipyard in a single day. Razorback was sponsored by Mrs. H. F. D. Davis, and commissioned on 3 April 1944 with Lieutenant Commander Albert M. Bontier in command.

Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum

The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is a maritime museum located at 120 Riverfront Park Drive, North Little Rock, Arkansas which opened on May 15, 2005. Its primary exhibit is the USS Razorback, a World War Two Balao-class submarine which later served in the Korean, Vietnam and Cold Wars. The submarine was later transitioned to the Turkish Navy before becoming a museum ship. It is arguably the longest-serving submarine still existing in the world, having been commissioned by the United States and Turkey for 53 years of active duty. Plans are in place to also acquire the USS Hoga, a tug which survived and responded to the attack on Pearl Harbor. The museum has recently begun to offer sleepovers on the submarine. The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum is the chartered organization for the Quapaw Area Council Sea Scout ship number 394. Sea Scout Ship 394, which meets aboard the USS Razorback, as part of the Venturing program, have a particular emphasis on water-based activities.

Crestview Park

Crestview Park is a small neighborhood park in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is roughly bounded by Cherry Hill Drive, Crestview Drive, and the westbound onramp to Interstate 40 from Arkansas Highway 107. The park, set on a steeply sloping parcel, has no major amenities, and was established for passive recreational uses of the nearby population. The park is notable for the presence of two naturalistic sculptures by Dionicio Rodriguez that were installed c. 1933. One is a footbridge that appears to have been fashioned out of a fallen tree, and the other is rustic shelter, one of Rodriguez more unusual works. The artwork within the park was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.

Amboy Overpass

The Amboy Overpass is a historic bridge in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Built in 1941, it carries MacArthur Drive across the railroad tracks of the Union Pacific Railroad in the northwestern part of the city. It is a twelve-span structure with a total length of 573 feet, whose longest span is 80 feet . The carrying piers and abutments are all fashioned out of reinforced concrete, and a concrete balustrade runs along each side of the deck. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

Edgemere Street Bridge

The Edgemere Street Bridge is a historic bridge in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It carries Edgemere Street over a small part of Lakewood Lake Number Three. It is a masonry structure with closed spandrels, and has a span of about 18 feet and a total length of 57 feet . It is built out of rustic, roughly squared fieldstone, that is laid in uncoursed fashion. Vertical columns project from either side of the spandrels, rising above the deck level to form a decorative parapet. It was built, along with the similar Lakeshore Drive Bridge as part of the innovative Lakewood Development project of developer Justin Matthews in the 1930s. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Verizon Arena

Verizon Arena is an 18,000-seat multi-purpose arena in North Little Rock, Arkansas, directly across the Arkansas River from downtown Little Rock. The arena opened in October 1999. It is Little Rocks main entertainment venue. The University of Arkansas at Little Rock Trojans played home games at the arena from the time when the arena opened until the team moved in 2005 to a new arena, the Jack Stephens Center, on the schools campus in Little Rock. The Arkansas RiverBlades, a defunct ice hockey team of the ECHL, the Arkansas RimRockers, a defunct minor league basketball team of the NBA Development League, and the Arkansas Diamonds, a defunct Indoor Football League team, also played at the arena. The arena is also used for other events, including concerts, rodeos, auto racing, professional wrestling, and trade shows and conventions.

Immaculate Heart of Mary Church

The Immaculate Heart of Mary Church is a historic church in northern Pulaski County, Arkansas. It is located off Arkansas Highway 365 in the community of Blue Hill, north of North Little Rock and east of Marche. The church building is a Gothic Revival structure, built out of brick on a stone foundation. It was designed by the noted Arkansas architect Charles L. Thompson, and was completed in 1932. The church building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Cherry House

The Cherry House is a historic house at 217 Dooley Road in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, finished with a painted brick veneer. The main block has single-story flanking wings, which join it a two-story wing on the left and a garage on the right. The main entrance is sheltered by Georgian Revival style semicircular portico. Built in 1930, it is the finest example of Colonial Revival architecture in the city's Edgemont neighborhood. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Hodge-Cook House

The Hodge-Cook House is a historic house at 620 North Maple Street in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a 1-1/2 story wood frame structure, with clapboard siding and a hip roof pierced by hip-roof dormers on each side. A gable-roof section projects from the right side of the front, with a three-part sash window and a half-round window in the gable. A porch extends across the rest of the front, supported by tapered Craftsman-style fluted square columns. The house was built c. 1898 by John Hodge, a local businessman, and is one of the city's finest examples of vernacular Colonial Revival architecture. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Jeffries House

The Jeffries House is a historic house at 415 Skyline Drive in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a 2-1/2 story wood frame structure, finished in a fieldstone veneer, and is three bays wide, with a side gable roof, end chimneys, and symmetrical single-story wings at the sides. The house is distinctive as a fine example of Colonial Revival architecture, rendered in the unusual veneered stone finish. Built in 1931 by the Justin Matthews Company, it was the last house Matthews built in the Edgemont subdivision before the Great Depression brought the development to an end. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Justin Matthews Jr. House

The Justin Matthews Jr. House is a historic house at 257 Skyline Drive in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a large two story Mediterranean Revival house, designed by Little Rock architect Max F. Meyer and built in 1928. It has all of the hallmarks of this style, including a red tile roof, stuccoed walls, arched openings for doors and windows, and wrought iron grillwork. The house was built for the son of developer Justin Matthews in his Park Hill development. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Owings House

The Owings House is a historic house at 563 Skyline Drive in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a two story brick building, with classic Spanish Revival features, including a tile roof, arched openings, and iron grillwork. It is unusual in that its brick has not been stuccoed. The house was built in 1927 by Justin Matthews as part of his large Edgemont development. It was the first house to be completed, and was lost by its owners to foreclosure during the Great Depression. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Engelberger House

The Engelberger House is a historic house at 2105 North Maple Street in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a two-story wood frame structure, with a hip roof and asymmetrical massing characteristic of the Queen Anne style of architecture. It has several projecting gable sections, an octagonal tower at one corner, and a porch that wraps around two sides. It was built in 1895, and is one of only two high-style Queen Anne houses in the city (the other is the Baker House). The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Barth-Hempfling House

The Barth-Hempfling House is a historic house at 507 Main Street in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a single-story wood frame structure, five bays wide, with a side gable roof and vernacular Late Victorian styling. It was built in 1886 for German immigrants, and is the last surviving house on Main Street in downtown North Little Rock, an area that was once lined with similar houses. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. It is also a contributing element of the Argenta Historic District.

Duffy House

The Duffy House is a historic house at 124 East "A" Street in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a two-story stuccoed structure with a tile roof in the Spanish Colonial style, with a single-story addition to the west, and a garage to the southwest, with a small attached maid's quarters. The house was built in 1929 by Justin Stewart as part of a large subdivision. Due to the effects of the Great Depression, it remained unsold for several years, and typifies the houses built in the subdivision before the 1929 stock market crash. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

East End Methodist Episcopal Church

The East End Methodist Episcopal Church is a historic church at 2401 E. Washington Avenue in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a single-story brick structure, with a broad gable roof and a porch extending across part of its front facade. It was built in 1922 for a congregation founded in 1915, and is a fine local example of vernacular Craftsman architecture. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2008.

Baker House

The Baker House is a historic house at 109 5th Street in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is an L-shaped structure, 2-1/2 stories in height, with a three-story round tower at the crook of the L. A highly decorated porch is built around the tower, providing access to the entrance. Built in 1898-99, it is one of the few surviving high-style Queen Anne Victorians in the city. It was built by A. E. Colburn, a local contractor, as his private residence, and was purchased in 1916 by C. J. and Annie Baker. Baker was from 1904 to 1906 the superintendent of North Little Rock's schools. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is also listed in the residential section of the Argenta Historic District.

Park Hill Fire Station and Water Company Complex

The Park Hill Fire Station and Water Company Complex is a collection of historic public facilities at 3417-21 Magnolia Street in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The complex consists of a fire station, a water company office, two concrete reservoirs, and two stone pump houses, all built in 1938 with funding support from the Works Progress Administration. The fire station and water company office are distinguished architecturally by their fieldstone exteriors and Mediterranean style, including red tiled roofs. They were designed by the Little Rock firm of Brueggeman, Swaim and Allen. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1993.

Waterside Street Bridge

The Waterside Street Bridge is a historic bridge, carrying Waterside Street across an inlet of Lake Number 1 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a rustic closed-spandrel masonry structure, with an exterior of rough uncoursed fieldstone that rises to parapet above the side of the roadbed. It is one of four masonry bridges built between 1929 and 1939 by developer Justin Matthews as part of the Lakewood subdivision. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

T. R. Pugh Memorial Park

T. R. Pugh Memorial Park is a re-creation of an 1880s era water-powered grist mill located in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It was used in the opening scenes of the movie classic Gone With The Wind. In 2010, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park was built in 1933 by Justin Matthews and named in honor of Thomas R. Pugh, of Portland, Arkansas, who was a close friend and benefactor of Matthews. The architect for the park and the mill was Frank Carmean with artist Dionicio Rodriguez serving as sculptor of the concrete work to simulate wooden, iron, and steel structures. In present day, due to its picturesque views, the Old Mill serves as the backdrop for weddings and portrait photography. In 2008, the roof was set on fire, but no permanent damage resulted.

Dickey-Stephens Park

Dickey-Stephens Park is a baseball park in North Little Rock, Arkansas, USA. The ballpark is primarily used for baseball and serves as the home for the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League. The capacity of the ballpark is 7,200 which includes 5,800 fixed seats capacity for 1,500 on the berms. It opened in 2007 as a replacement for Ray Winder Field in Little Rock, Arkansas. The ballpark is named after four local Arkansas brothers: Baseball Hall of Famer Bill Dickey, former Major League Baseball catcher George Dickey, and businessmen Jackson T. Stephens and W.R. Stephens.

Lake No. 1 Bridge

The Lake No. 1 Bridge is a historic bridge, carrying Avondale Road across the northern tip of Lake Number 1 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a closed-spandrel stone arch bridge with Rustic styling, built in the 1920s as part of the Lakewood development promoted by developer Justin Mathews. It has a single elliptical arch, spanning 18 feet , with a total structure length of 30 feet . It was one of eight stone-arch bridges built in the state between 1923 and 1939, and one of the few that was privately built. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Lakeshore Drive Bridge

The Lakeshore Drive Bridge carries a closed-off portion of Lakeshore Drive across a tributary stream on the west side of Lake Number 3 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a stone arch bridge with closed spandrels and a total structure length of 53 feet . The bridge consists of a single elliptical curved arch, which spans 20 feet and is 5 feet high. Rustic square stone columns rise from the spandrels, creating uneven parapets on the sides of the structure. The bridge was built in the late 1930s as part of developer Justin Matthews' construction of the Lakewood area. It is one of a small number of documented masonry arch bridges in the state. The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Lakewood Park

Lakewood Park is a private park located at the northern end of Lake Number Three in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is roughly bounded on the east by Edgemere Drive, the south by the lake, and the west by Lakeshore Drive, although a portion of the park lies west of Lakeshore Drive. Use of most of the park's athletic and recreational facilities are limited to members of the Lakewood Property Owners Association, which owns and manages the park. The park includes seven artworks by the Mexican artist Dionicio Rodriguez, which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Faucette Building

The Faucette Building is a historic commercial building at 4th and Main Streets in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a two story masonry structure, with three storefronts, and a false parapet above the second floor. It was built in 1890 by William Faucette, one of the leading citizens of the unincorporated area of Argenta. The area was annexed to Little Rock in the 1890s, and it was Faucette who engineered the formation of North Little Rock in the early 20th century. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It is also a contributing property to the commercial section of the Argenta Historic District.

Big Dam Bridge

Originally intended to be called Murray Bridge, the Big Dam Bridge in Arkansas spans the Arkansas River and Murray Lock and Dam between Little Rock and North Little Rock and is open only to pedestrian and bicycle traffic. At 4,226 feet in length it is the longest pedestrian/bicycle bridge in North America that has never been used by trains or motor vehicles. It rises to 90 feet over the Arkansas River and 30 feet over the dam. The span over the river is 3,463 feet , with the ramps on either side of the river accounting for the rest of the length. The southern end of the bridge is near Little Rock's Murray Park, while the northern end is at Cook's Landing Park in North Little Rock. The nickname was given by Pulaski County Judge F.G. “Buddy” Villines, who was concerned about the financing needed and was quoted to say, "We're going to build that dam bridge." (He insisted he was referring to its location on a dam, and was not using the mild expletive.) The construction cost was $12.8 million. The opening ceremony was held on Saturday, September 30, 2006. Local politicians boasted that the bridge will boost the local economy and contribute to the health of the population. The bridge and adjacent parks are used for several races including the Big Dam Bridge 100 cycling tour, the BDB Twilight 5k race, and the BDB Duathlon. The Federal Highway Administration gave one of its first Exemplary Human Environment Initiative awards to the bridge, and Illuminating Engineer Society gave its Award of Merit at the international level to the bridge's LED lighting design.

Rock Island-Argenta Depot

The Rock Island-Argenta Depot is a historic former railroad station at 4th, Beech, and Hazel Streets in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a single-story brick structure with a roughly cruciform plan. It has a gabled red tile roof with parapeted gable ends, in the Mediterranean style common to railroad stations of the Rock Island Railroad. The building houses two waiting rooms, with the telegrapher's bay projecting on the former track side, and a baggage room projecting on the street side. Built in 1913, it is a well-preserved example of a Rock Island station, and a reminder of the importance of the railroad to the city's growth. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Shorter College

Shorter College is a two-year, private, historically black liberal arts college located in North Little Rock, Arkansas. It was founded in 1886 by the African Methodist Episcopal Church as a logical and pragmatic response to the need of recently freed slaves to overcome the many disadvantages and deprivations of slavery and racial discrimination. This was a time, little more than twenty years after the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery, when black people had no access to institutions of higher learning. In fact, the prevailing attitude was that Blacks had no capacity for learning and the vast majority lacked basic education and skills. The church seized the opportunity to provide instruction leading to a general education, but also aimed at developing competent leadership among Black people. In November 1886, under the leadership of Bishop T.M.D. Ward, the Arkansas Annual Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, less than twenty years after it was organized, formulated a plan for establishing an institution of higher learning. When it opened on September 15, 1886, the school was housed in the basement of Bethel A. M. E. Church on Ninth and Broadway in Little Rock, Arkansas and was named Bethel University. Its first session opened with an enrollment of 109 students, and a long-standing commitment to providing quality education to Central Arkansas was established. In December 1892 the Annual Conference renamed the school to Shorter University in honor of Bishop James Alexander Shorter, organizer of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Arkansas. On May 18, 1894, Shorter University was chartered under its new name. A year later, under the leadership of Principal F. T. Vinegar and Bishop W. B. Derrick, Shorter acquired land and buildings in North Little Rock, Arkansas, with financial donation from local businessman and Prince Hall Masons leader Ed Wood Sr. in 1895. On August 14, 1903, the charter was amended to change the name of the institution to Shorter College, in that same year, the first building was Bishop J.A. Shorter erected and named Tyree Hall. In 1955, a decision was made to operate the college as a 2-year institution under the leadership of President Theophilus D. Alexander and Bishop William R. Wilkes. In 1958, the positions were combined, and Reverend A.O. Wilson served as both President and Regional A.M.E. Bishop. Dr. Katherine P. Mitchell, elected on September 21, 1989, by the Board of Trustees, took office on November 1, 1989 becoming the first woman to be elected President of the College. Under Dr. Mitchell’s leadership, the college made significant progress to include the completion of the Henry A. Belin Health-Plex and the Alexander-Turner Child Development Center. Under the administration of the College’s 43rd President, Lillie Alexis, the Board of Trustees elected to bring back one of its former Presidents, Dr. Katherine P. Mitchell, to lead the effort to gain candidacy status with Transnational Association of Colleges and Schools . On April 13, 2011, Shorter College received notification of its successful completion of this accomplishment. In October 2013, under the leadership of O. Jerome Green, 45th president, Shorter College became fully accredited with TRACS allowing students to earn associate degrees that are recognized by other institutions.
