Puncak Jaya

Puncak Jaya or Carstensz Pyramid is the highest summit of Mount Carstensz in the Sudirman Range of the western central highlands of Papua Province, Indonesia (within Puncak Jaya Regency). Other summits are East Carstensz Peak (4,808 m), Sumantri and Ngga Pulu (4,863 m). Other names include Nemangkawi in the Amungkal language, Carstensz Toppen and Gunung Soekarno. At 4,884 metres above sea level, Puncak Jaya is the highest mountain in Indonesia, the highest on the island of New Guinea (which comprises the Indonesian West Papua region plus Papua New Guinea), the highest on the continent of Australia (which comprises New Guinea, the country of Australia, Timor, other islands, and submerged continental shelf), the highest in Oceania, and the 5th highest mountain in political Southeast Asia. It is also the highest point between the Himalayas and the Andes, and the highest island peak in the world. Some sources claim Papua New Guinea's Mount Wilhelm, 4,509 m (14,793 ft), as the highest mountain peak in Oceania, on account of Indonesia being part of Asia (Southeast Asia). The massive, open Grasberg mine is within 4 kilometers from Puncak Jaya.

Jayapura

Jayapura City is the provincial capital of Papua, Indonesia. It is situated on the island of New Guinea, on Yos Sudarso Bay (formerly known as Humboldt Bay). It covers an area of 935.92 km2, and borders Jayapura Regency to the west, Keerom Regency to the south, the nation of Papua New Guinea to the east, and the Pacific Ocean to the north. It had a population of 256,705 at the 2010 Census; the latest official estimate (as at January 2014) is 315,872. Jayapura is the largest city in the Indonesian part of New Guinea. It is served by Sentani Airport, located near Lake Sentani. A highway connects the city to Skow, a small town near the border with Papua New Guinea and continues beyond the border to Vanimo. The government is currently planning to build a railway from Jayapura to Sarmi. Further plans could connect Jayapura with Manokwari and Sorong. The project is planned for completion by 2030.

Lorentz National Park

Lorentz National Park is located in the Indonesian province of Papua, formerly known as Irian Jaya . With an area of 25,056 km2, it is the largest national park in South-East Asia. In 1999 Lorentz was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. An outstanding example of the biodiversity of New Guinea, Lorentz is one of the most ecologically diverse national parks in the world. It is the only nature reserve in the Asia-Pacific region to contain a full altitudinal array of ecosystems ranging through marine areas, mangroves, tidal and freshwater swamp forest, lowland and montane rainforest, alpine tundra, and equatorial glaciers. At 4884 meters, Puncak Jaya is the tallest mountain between the Himalayas and the Andes. Birdlife International has called Lorentz Park “probably the single most important reserve in New Guinea”. It contains five of World Wildlife Funds "Global 200" ecoregions: Southern New Guinea Lowland Forests; New Guinea Montane Forests; New Guinea Central Range Subalpine Grasslands; New Guinea Mangroves; and New Guinea Rivers and Streams. Lorentz Park contains many unmapped and unexplored areas, and is certain to contain many species of plants and animals as yet unknown to Western science. Local communities ethnobotanical and ethnozoological knowledge of the Lorentz biota is also very poorly documented. The park is named for Hendrikus Albertus Lorentz, a Dutch explorer who passed through the area on his 1909–10 expedition.

Mopah International Airport

Mopah International Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Internasional Mopah) (IATA: MKQ, ICAO: WAKK) is an airport in Merauke, Papua, Indonesia. The airport is considered to be Indonesia's easternmost airport. The airport serves as the main gateway to several tourist destinations around Merauke, the most notably is the Wasur National Park. The airport was constructed by the Allied forces in 1943 during the time of World War II. The airport was built so that the allied forces can coordinate attack on the Japanese forces. After the Surrender of Japan in 1945, the allied forces started leaving the airport and military control of the airport was handed back to the government of Dutch East Indies in 1945. The airport is then managed by the Dutch organization Netherlands Indies Civil Administration (NICA). Following the New York Agreement, the Dutch handed the control of the airport to the Indonesian government in 1962 as they left New Guinea. With the continued increase in tourist visits, the activity of airlines using the airport is also increased. The old terminal building which only has an area of 1,972 m2 and can only accommodate up to 331 passengers at peak hours are no longer sufficient because it exceeds the capacity of the terminal. To increase the capacity of the terminal, the terminal building was extensively renovated in 2015. The airport terminal was expanded from just 1.972 m2 to 4.634 m2. It can now cater around 200,000 passenger annually. The check-in counter and baggage claim area now has a more minimalist interior. The airport's parking lot was also expanded to cater more vehicles. The airport's toilet was also renovated extensively. The boarding lounge was also expanded and now contains 381 seats for the passengers to seat on. Outside the terminal building, canopy has now been installed at the drop off location so that passengers avoid the heat and rain when they arrive at the terminal building. In one corner of the terminal, ATM Center also food court are now built. To add to the beauty and comfort for the passengers, around the terminal has been planted with trees and green grass. In total, the rehabilitation and expansion of the terminal building cost around Rp 16 billion. A new terminal building is planned to be constructed. It is predicted to start by the end of 2016. The new airport terminal is slated to be the largest airport terminal in the province of Papua and West Papua. The new terminal would have an area of 21,000 m2.

Nop Goliat Dekai Airport

Nop Goliat Dekai Airport (IATA: DEX, ICAO: WAVD) is an airport serving the town of Dekai, the capital of Yahukimo Regency, Papua, Indonesia. Nop Goliat Airport is one of the seven pioneer airports that connects 517 villages in Yahukimo. Construction of the airport Nop Goliath is built on an area of 230 hectares, there have been initiated in the period 2004-2010 by using a budget of Rp 321 billion The airport was built to be a logistics distribution center in the highland region of Papua, as well as supporting the mobility of people and goods. Construction of airports is intended as a logistics distribution center for central highland region of Papua Province, which previously concentrated through Wamena Airport. After extensive delays, the airport was finally inaugurated by President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) on 18 October 2016. Jokowi personally wants this airports continue to be developed and requested Minister of Transportation Budi Karya Sumadi to extend the runway from 1,950 m to 2,500 meters for the next 2 years. Then, the Ministry of Transportation has allocated Rp 350 billion ($26.8 million) for the expansion, so the expansion runway can serves Boeing 737-200 and Boeing 737-300. It is predicted that the expansion will be finished in 2017. Currently Nop Goliath airport runway equipped with measuring 1.950 m x 30 m, 2 exit taxiway with a size of 75 m x 23 m each, an apron measuring 320 m x 60 m and equipments as well as other supporting facilities. In the meantime the airport terminal building itself has a n area of 1,900 m2 and can accommodate 300 passengers at peak hours.

Wamena Airport

Wamena Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Wamena) (IATA: WMX, ICAO: WAVV), is an airport serving the town of Wamena, Puncak Jaya Regency, Papua Province, Indonesia. The airport also serves the neighboring Lanny Jaya Regency and Tolikara Regency. It is currently the only airport in the highland region of Papua that can accommodate narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320, Boeing 737 and C-130 Hercules. The airport also serves as the entry point to the Baliem Valley, where it is known for the Baliem Valley Cultural Festival (Indonesian: Festival Budaya Lembah Baliem) which is held annually. Due to being located at a high altitude and surrounded by high mountains, Wamena Airport is dubbed as one of the most dangerous airports in Indonesia. Unpredictable weather in the highland of Papua has resulted some aircraft accidents, which sometimes resulted in fatalities. Moreover, the presence of the Free Papua Movement guerrilla in the mountains and jungles nearby has posed a serious risk to the safety of passengers in the airport.
