Family Kingdom Amusement Park

Family Kingdom Amusement Park is a seaside amusement park in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Located on Ocean Boulevard, in the heart of Myrtle Beach, the amusement park has 37 rides for adults and children of all ages, including thrill rides, family rides, kiddie rides and go karts. In 2007, TripAdvisor ranked it at number five on its list of the top 10 amusement parks outside Orlando. In business for more than 40 years, the park has a 2,400 foot, figure eight Swamp Fox wooden roller coaster, which is one of only 122 wooden roller coasters operating in North America and ranked number 10 on About.coms list of the top 10 most underrated roller coasters in North America. Other signature rides include O.D. Hopkins Log Flume, Great Pistolero Round-up and the Giant Wheel. Family Kingdoms "Giant Wheel" has round open gondolas that take riders to a height of more than 100 feet where they get a panoramic view of Myrtle Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. For 19 years, until 2011, it reigned as the highest Ferris wheel in the state Family Kingdom is one of the few remaining free-admission parks in the U.S. There is no admission price to enter the open park. Ride tickets can be purchased independently. Wristbands that entitle patrons to ride all day are available. The park provides free entertainment such as clowns, magicians, jugglers, stilt walkers, face painters and balloon sculptors. Family Kingdom Amusement Park is located on both banks of historic Withers Swash. The swash is a point where a natural stream meets the beach and ocean, and through which tides flow. Much of the surrounding area was part of a 66,000-acre kings grant to Robert Francis Withers in the early 1700s, who operated it as an indigo plantation overlooking the swash. Family Kingdom Amusement Park is approximately 13 acres.

Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge

Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1997, is a recent addition to the United States National Wildlife Refuge system. It is located in parts of northeastern Georgetown County, South Carolina, southern Horry, and southeastern Marion counties, and contains lands adjacent to the Pee Dee River, the Little Pee Dee River, and the Waccamaw River near their confluence. Currently the size of the refuge is 22,931 acres but plans call for the total refuge to be over 50,000 acres . It was founded to preserve valuable undeveloped coastal wetland and adjacent uplands that provide habitats for many species of wildlife. One endangered species that is given a home, primarily on longleaf pine forest on Sandy Island is the red-cockaded woodpecker. It is also a nesting area for swallow-tailed kites and bald eagles. The stated objectives of this refuge are: Provide habitat for waterfowl, shorebirds, wading birds, raptors, neo-tropical migratory birds, and resident species. Environmental education and interpretation. Provide opportunities for hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The Refuge visitors center is located just north of Georgetown on Highway 701 overlooking the Great Pee Dee River in the small community of Yauhannah, SC.

Broadway at the Beach

Broadway at the Beach is a shopping center located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Since its inception in 1995, it has grown to be one of Myrtle Beachs premier shopping destinations. Broadway at the Beach is owned and operated by Burroughs Chapin Company, Inc. The $250 million attraction is set on 350 acres in the heart of Myrtle Beach and features three theaters, over 20 restaurants and more than 100 specialty shops as well as attractions, nightclubs, and hotels, all surrounding the 23-acre Lake Broadway. The complex is a past recipient of the South Carolina Governors Cup and was deemed the states best travel destination by the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation Tourism. Over 14 million people visit Broadway at the Beach annually, making it the region’s most popular destination. The complex contains three hotels, a Hampton Inn, Fairfield Inn, and Holiday Inn Express.

Myrtle Beach Speedway

The Myrtle Beach Speedway, originally named Rambi Raceway, was built in 1958 and is located on U.S. Route 501 near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The speedway is a semi-banked asphaltic oval track that spans 0.538 miles . The NASCAR Busch Series raced at Myrtle Beach Speedway from 1988 to 2000. Currently the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series race on Saturday nights from April until November. The track also runs various other classes of racing including Late Model Charger, Super Trucks and Mini Stocks. The speedway is home of the Myrtle Beach 400, NASCAR Racing Experience and the Wheels of Destruction Thrill Show. NASCAR's recent testing ban on active national and regional series tracks may make the D-shaped oval popular for testing, as it is close enough for NASCAR teams to use as a testing venue as none of the four series in question race there. Over the years, Myrtle Beach Speedway has been the training grounds for some of NASCAR’s biggest stars including Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Gordon (former Busch Series track record holder). All four generations of Pettys and three generations of Earnhardts have taken a green flag around the asphalt oval that spans 0.538 miles .

Swamp Fox

The Swamp Fox wooden roller coaster is located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina It is one of 37 rides at Family Kingdom Amusement Park. The coaster is named after American Revolutionary War leader, Francis Marion. The Swamp Fox is a wooden roller coaster that runs over a 2,400 feet , figure-eight track. The “double out and back” design takes riders to heights of 75 feet at speeds up to 50 miles per hour and features dramatic drops of up to 65 feet . It is number 10 on About.com's list of “The 10 Most Underrated Coasters In North America.” The visual beauty and architectural design of wooden roller coasters such as the Swamp Fox add to their mystique. The Swamp Fox seems to have a personality all its own. Because it is a wooden roller coaster, it delivers a very different ride experience from the Twist 'n Shout, a steel roller coaster that Family Kingdom Amusement Park added in 2013. From its rumbling, shuddering sounds to its thrilling vibrations, the Swamp Fox delivers a heightened sense of danger for riders. Functioning as a shock absorber, the coaster's structure is designed to sway with the force of the moving train. In addition, the experience on this wooden roller coaster can be different throughout the day as the temperature and the weather changes. Rain brings out the rich smell of the wood, and expansions and contractions in the wood can translate into more movement. Some people even claim that wooden coasters like the Swamp Fox run better at night when the grease on the track and the wheel bearings loosen up. In one experiment performed on the Swamp Fox, operators found that the train ran its track anywhere from eight to 10 seconds faster at 9 p.m. than it did around 2 p.m. in the afternoon. The Swamp Fox roller coaster, built by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company of Pennsylvania, opened in 1966 as one of the rides at Grand Strand Amusement Park. In 1992, that park was purchased by the Ammons family and rechristened "Family Kingdom Amusement Park". The Swamp Fox was then totally refurbished according to the original specifications of the original design by John C. Allen.

Chesterfield Inn

Chesterfield Inn, also known as Chesterfield Inn and Motor Lodge, was a historic hotel located at Myrtle Beach in Horry County, South Carolina. The Chesterfield Inn consisted of two three-story, rectangular buildings constructed in 1946 and 1965. The 1946 building was of frame construction with a brick veneer exterior, with an end to front gable roof, and a raised basement foundation. It was an unusual example of Colonial Revival style architecture in the Myrtle Beach area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. It was removed from the list on October 23, 2013 after being demolished to make way for a miniature golf course in 2012. The original Chesterfield was a five-room house built in 1936 by Steven Chapman of Chesterfield, South Carolina. That house burned and was replaced in 1946. Clay Brittain, whose uncle built the brick building, worked there as a teenager and became an owner in 1965, running the hotel until 1991. In April 2002, Parkside Inn & Suites of Anaheim, California bought the inn and improved it after Centura Bank foreclosed. By 2004, Karon Mitchell and her family owned the Chesterfield. In 2009, Mitchell announced plans to tear down the inn for a mini golf course to accompany the new Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. The plan was delayed by the economic downturn, but by the end of June 2012 demolition was scheduled. People who wanted artifacts were able to collect them on June 19, 2012. The mini golf course was scheduled to open the following March. On August 22, 2012, the Chesterfield Inn was demolished by construction crews. Shark Attack Adventure Golf opened on the site in Spring 2013, with bricks from the old inn painted with the green and white "Chesterfield" sign. Hammerhead Grill following in the summer in June, with tables made from the inn's floors, and inn-related items on display.
