Capital Brewery

Capital Brewery is a brewery in Middleton, Wisconsin, USA. Founded on March 14, 1984, by Madison, Wisconsin entrepreneur Ed Janus, it is in a former egg processing plant. The company first began production in spring, 1986, and now produces over 28,000 barrels of beer annually. It produces 24 distinct beers, of which nine are annuals, five are seasonals, and ten are limited release. Most are made using the strict Reinheitsgebot guidelines. The companys brews have won awards at a number of competitions, including the Great American Beer Festival, and The Great Taste of the Midwest. The brewery was awarded the distinction of Madisons Favorite Local/Regional Beer from 1998 to 2004 in the The Capital Times/Wisconsin State Journal Readers Choice Awards. The company has received over 200 major awards in both domestic and international competitions in over 15 categories, and the flagship Wisconsin Amber beer has been available in cans since 1997. Capital Brewery was named "Americas #1 Rated Brewery" by the Beverage Testing Institutes World Beer Championships in 1998. The brewery was also rated #7 in the world at this time. Capital was named the Grand National Champion in the 2013 US Open Beer Championship, winning six medals. Capital Brewery’s beers are currently distributed in four Midwestern States: Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, as well as Florida. Capital Brewery has an indoor Bier Stube as well as a large outdoor beer garden that is host to events throughout the year. One of the more popular is Bockfest, held on the last Saturday in February. Bockfest celebrates and ushers in the annual release of Capital Blonde Doppelbock, Capitals most highly decorated brew. Blonde Doppelbock has been awarded platinum six times in the past ten years at the World Beer Championships. The Capital Brewery Bike Club was formed in 2009 and currently has over 400 members. The bicycle rides are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings from April through October and originate from the Bier Garten.

National Mustard Museum

The National Mustard Museum is a museum near U.S. 14 in the heart of downtown Middleton, Wisconsin. It boasts a large display of prepared mustards. It is often featured in lists of unusual museums in the United States. The museum was conceived and founded by Barry Levenson, former Assistant Attorney General of Wisconsin. It centers on a mustard collection he began in 1986 while despondent over the failure of his favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, to win the 1986 World Series. The initial dozen jars have grown to a collection of more than 5,300 mustards from more than 60 countries, along with hundreds of items of mustard memorabilia and exhibits depicting the use of mustard through history. The museum opened its doors in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin on April 6, 1992. It moved across the street to a larger site in October 2000. In November 2009, the museum moved to Middleton and changed its name to the present one. Admission is free of charge, and the museum is open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., though it is closed on Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. The museums gift shop occupies about half of its floor space and offers free tasting of mustard samples from a refrigerated case containing scores of varieties; the museum also operates a mail-order mustard business. Among the displays are sweet hot mustards, fruit mustards, hot pepper mustards, horseradish mustards, and spirit mustards. The collection includes a large variety of French and English mixes, but many other countries are also represented. In 2002, the museum was showcased on the Food Network television series, Unwrapped. The museum and its curator have also been featured on National Public Radios Morning Edition broadcast of July 29, 2010, and Weekend Edition Saturday on February 18, 1995 .

Middleton Depot

The Middleton Depot, Chicago, Milwaukee, and St. Paul Railroad is a railway depot built by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as The Milwaukee Road) in 1895 in Middleton, Wisconsin. The depot is a rectangular single-story wood-frame building. It was built to replace an earlier depot that burned. The depot consisted of a passenger waiting room, a freight room and a station agent's office. The depot served passenger trains until 1960 and was used as a freight depot until 1975. The depot was sold to the City of Middleton, which uses it as a senior citizen's center. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its architecture and also because of its association with the development of railroads in Middleton and Wisconsin.
