Arizona State University Tempe campus

Arizona State University Tempe campus is the largest of four campuses that compose Arizona State University. The campus lies in the heart of Tempe, Arizona, about eight miles east of downtown Phoenix. The campus is considered urban, and is approximately 642 acres in size. ASU's Tempe campus is arranged around broad pedestrian malls and is completely encompassed by an arboretum. ASU has an extensive public art collection, considered one of the ten best among university public art collections in the United States. Against the northwest edge of campus is the Mill Avenue district which has a college atmosphere that attracts many students to its restaurants and bars. ASU's Tempe Campus is also home to all of the university's athletic facilities.

Tempe Butte

Tempe Butte is the official name of an andesite butte of volcanic origin, located partially on Arizona State Universitys Tempe campus in Tempe, Arizona. It is often referred to by locals as A Mountain, after the 60-foot-tall gold-painted letter A near the top. Another name for the area, used by the City of Tempe, is Hayden Butte. The highest point of Tempe Butte stands at 1,398 feet in elevation, while its base is at approximately 1,150 feet in elevation. Tempe Butte is most often seen as the backdrop to games held in Sun Devil Stadium, including until recently the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, as well as Super Bowl XXX.

Arboretum at Arizona State University

The Arboretum at Arizona State University is an arboretum located in small exhibit sites scattered across walkways and open areas throughout the campus of the Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. All of the sites are open to the public daily without charge, since the campus public areas are not shut off from city streets. The arboretum was formally dedicated in 1990, and now includes over 300 species from the Sonoran Desert and other regions. It contains one of the best collections of date palms and conifers in the desert Southwest, as well as a growing collection of native southwestern plants. Center for Meteorite Studies

The Center for Meteorite Studies was founded in 1960, on the Tempe Campus of Arizona State University, and houses the worlds largest university-based meteorite collection. The collection contains specimens from over 1,600 separate meteorite falls and finds, and is actively used internationally for planetary, geological and space science research. The Center also operates a meteorite museum which is open to the public.

Big Surf

Big Surf is a waterpark located in Tempe, Arizona. Opened in 1969 and financed by the Clairol Company, it boasted the first wave pool in the United States. The wave pool was designed by Phil Dexter. At a ceremony on August 17, 2013 the Waikiki Beach Wave pool was designated as an ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. The recognition is for being the "first inland surfing facility in North America". The Big Surf Water park became the first amusement park or waterpark to receive such an ASME landmark status.

Wells Fargo Arena

Wells Fargo Arena is a 10,754-seat multi-purpose arena at 634 E Veterans Way in Tempe, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix, Arizona. Constructed in the spring of 1974 as the ASU Activity Center and at the cost of $8 million, the facility also plays host to graduation ceremonies and a variety of concerts and shows. The building replaced Sun Devil Gym as the primary arena for the Sun Devils basketball team. Naming rights for the arena were purchased by Wells Fargo Co. in 1997.

Marquee Theatre

Marquee Theatre is a small-sized music venue in Tempe, Arizona. The theater sits on the north side of Tempe Town Lake near the Mill Avenue Bridge, at the intersection of Mill Avenue and Washington Street, the primary business and entertainment district in Tempe.

Arizona Mills

Arizona Mills is an indoor outlet mall in Tempe, Arizona. It was co-owned by Simon Property Group and Taubman Centers and managed by Simon. However, Taubman has since sold the remaining 75% stake to Simon, which now wholly owns it. It opened on November 20, 1997, with 6,000 parking spaces and approximately 200 retailers. It is currently anchored by Sears Outlet Appliance, Neiman Marcus Last Call, and Burlington Coat Factory. The mall is located on the Southeast corner of US 60 and I-10. Despite the presence of 'Mills' in its name, it is not geographically close to or affiliated with Mill Avenue, a shopping and entertainment district near Hayden Butte to the north. The name comes from that of the property developer, formerly known as the Mills Corporation. Like other Mills Centers, Arizona Mills has abstract graphics from the entrances and inside the whole mall. Likewise for this mall, numerous artworks are displayed throughout Arizona Mills from the people of Arizona. In June 2008, the mall's website was changed from its former Mills Corporation format to its Simon Malls format along with 16 other sister Simon-Mills malls. It was the last Simon-Mills mall to make the switch. It is one of two malls Simon currently owns in Arizona, the other being the Phoenix Premium Outlets on the Gila River Indian Community near Chandler, Arizona, which opened on April 4, 2013. It is the third mall Simon has ever owned in Arizona, previously having owned Southgate Mall in Yuma, Arizona, and Metrocenter Mall in Phoenix, which is now owned by Westcor.

Double Butte Cemetery

The Double Butte Cemetery is the official name given to a historic cemetery in Tempe, Arizona. The cemetery was founded in 1888 on the baseline of the Double Butte Mountain for which it is named. It is the final resting place of various notable pioneers of the City of Tempe. The cemetery, which is located at 2505 W. Broadway Rd., is listed in the Tempe Historic Property Register Designation #46. The pioneer section of the cemetery was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on July 30, 2013, reference #13000020.

Gammage Memorial Auditorium

Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium is considered to be the last public commission of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Groundbreaking took place and construction on the building began on May 23, 1962. It took 25 months to complete. The built-on-time, under-budget building opened in 1964 with the Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Eugene Ormandy. The auditorium is named for Dr. Grady Gammage, President of Arizona State University from 1933 to 1959. The auditorium is located on the main campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona at the crossroads of Mill Avenue and Apache Boulevard. The building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Borden Milk Co. Creamery and Ice Factory

The Borden Milk Co. Creamery and Ice Factory is a historical site in Tempe, Arizona. Built originally as an ice plant, it was altered to also produce pasteurized bottled milk. The Pacific Creamery Plant was sold in 1927, and it operated under the Borden name until its closure in 1953. The building stood empty until it was reopened as Four Peaks Brewery, a restaurant and regional brewery. The Borden operation had enough impact on the city that a new park was designated "Creamery Park" in 1999. Built in the Mission Revival style, the building is almost entirely red brick, with wooden ceilings and a glass clerestory reaching as high as 35 feet, supported by steel suspension. The nine buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

President's House

The President's House is a building on the Tempe campus of Arizona State University. It was built in 1907 to serve as the lodgings for the president of what was then known as the Tempe Normal School. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985 and currently houses the Virginia G. Piper Center for Creative Writing, known as the writer's house.

Arizona State University Art Museum

The Arizona State University Art Museum is an art museum operated by Arizona State University, located on its main campus in Tempe, Arizona. The Art Museum has some 12,000 objects in its permanent collection and describes its primary focuses as contemporary art, including new media and "innovative methods of presentation"; crafts, with an emphasis on American ceramics; historic and contemporary prints; art from Arizona and the Southwestern United States, with an emphasis on Latino artists, and art of the Americas, with one historic American pieces and modernist and contemporary Latin American works. The art collection was established in 1950. The current director of the Art Museum is Gordon Knox. The director of the museum reports to the dean of the ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, and community members are represented through an Art Museum Advisory Board. The museum is located in two buildings. The main exhibition space is the Nelson Fine Arts Center, designed by architect Antoine Predock. A second museum facility, the Ceramics Research Center lies to the north, on 7th Street and Mill Ave in the Brickyard Engineering Building. Admission to the museum is free. Parking at the main museum is free if you use the reserved spaces across 10th Street. Parking at the Brickyard location is metered.

Karsten Golf Course

ASU Karsten Golf Course is a classic designed links-style golf course in Tempe, Arizona, located on the campus of Arizona State University. Designed by noted course architect Pete Dye, it opened for play in September 1989 and is the home venue of the Sun Devils golf teams. Privately funded, the largest single contributor was Karsten Solheim, the founder of Phoenix-based PING golf clubs. The clubhouse and ASU players facility were completed in November 1994. It is located at the northeast edge of campus, among the other athletic venues at ASU, just east of Sun Devil Stadium. The elevation of the course is approximately 1,150 feet above sea level. Considered to many as the Home of Champions, referring to ASUs strong collegiate golf programs national titles; twice in mens and seven times in womens . Alumni among PGA and LPGA Tour professionals include Phil Mickelson, Billy Mayfair, Paul Casey, Howard Twitty, Tom Purtzer, Heather Farr, Grace Park, Azahara Muñoz, and Carlota Ciganda. Awarded a high 4½ rating by Golf Digest Rating Panel, a number of holes could be considered the course’s signature hole. The short par-four 4th hole, the tough par-four 9th, the dauntingly long par-three 16th from the tips) or the ill humor par-four 18th which is guarded by water down the left side and is considered one of the toughest finishing holes in the state. The course has hosted tournaments, including the collegiate Men’s and Women’s Pac-10 and NCAA Championships, Phoenix Thunderbirds Collegiate Invitational, PING Invitational, and U.S. Open Qualifying.

Arizona State University Research Park

The Arizona State University Research Park is a business and recreational park that is operated by Arizona State University. Located in the city of Tempe, Arizona, United States; the park sits on eastern half of the square mile bordered on the north by East Elliot Road, on the east by the Arizona State Highway: Route Loop 101 Price Freeway, on the south by East Warner Road, and the west by South McClintock Drive. Dr. Morgan R. Olsen, Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer at ASU, is the current President of the ASU Research Park Board. Sunbelt Holdings has provided asset management services to the ASU Research Park since 1992.

Tempe Diablo Stadium

Tempe Diablo Stadium is a baseball field located in Tempe, Arizona. It is the spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the home field for night games of the Arizona League Tempe Angels. It was the spring training home of the Seattle Pilots in 1969 and 1970the Milwaukee Brewers in 1971 and 1972, and the Seattle Mariners from 1977 through 1993; the Mariners now play at the Peoria Sports Complex, with the San Diego Padres. The stadium was built in 1968 and holds 9,558 people. The stadium underwent an extensive $20 million renovation and was rededicated on Mar. 3, 2006. The renovation included the main stadium, the Major League Fields and the Minor League Complex on site. In return for the newly updated stadium, the Angels agreed to extend their spring training lease through Dec. 31, 2025. $12 million of the renovations were funded by the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority, a municipal corporation charged with funding renovations of Cactus League stadiums throughout Maricopa County. Tempe Diablo Stadium can be seen from the Maricopa Freeway.

Sun Devil Gym

Sun Devil Gym is a 4,609 seat multi-purpose arena in Tempe, Arizona. It was home to the Arizona State University Sun Devils basketball team from 1953 until the Wells Fargo Arena opened in 1974. The building is now known as Physical Education West and is used mostly for intramural sports at the university. Prior to its opening, the basketball team played at either College Gym on the Tempe campus, or at the Mesa Civic Center. ASU Sun Devils 2009-10 Mens Basketball Media Guide, p. 35.

Sun Devil Soccer Stadium

Sun Devil Soccer Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium on the campus of Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona. It is home to the Arizona State Sun Devils Womens Soccer team. The stadium opened in 2000 and features chair-back bleachers and individual seats with a capacity for 1,051 fans. On December 11, 2012, Phoenix FC and Arizona State Sun Devils announced a stadium agreement for the 2013 season. As part of the deal, the seating capacity was expanded by more than 2,500 additional seats, taking the total capacity to 3,400 seats. The temporary stands, rented from the Phoenix Open Golf Tournament, were returned on July 2nd. The Stadium is back to its original capacity of 1,051 seats. The agreement was not renewed after the season ended.

Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium

Alberta B. Farrington Softball Stadium is the home of the Arizona State University Sun Devils college softball team. The stadium holds 1,535 fans and was built around the old stadiums existing field and the new stadium was designed by the architecture firm of Jones Studio, Inc. and was completed in 2000. Farrington Stadium is considered one of the nations top collegiate softball fields providing high-end amenities such as chair-back bleachers and individual seats, restrooms, built-in concessions, and stadium shop for fans. A new press box with a seating capacity of 16 was added in 2013. In 2014, solar panels were added to the stadium. The panels were placed above the seating areas providing shade for the spectators. The Sun Devils have earned 16 postseason bids, fourth all-time in the Pac-10 Conference, and has made four trips to the Womens College World Series. Prior to the current NCAA format, ASU went to seven WCWS, claiming back-to-back national tiles in 1972 and 1973.In 2008, the softball team won the universities first Womens College World Series sweeping the Texas AM Aggies in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Tempe Town Lake

Tempe Town Lake is a reservoir that occupies a portion of the currently dry riverbed of the Salt River as it passes through the city of Tempe, Arizona just north of Tempe Butte. On July 20, 2010, a portion of the west side of the dam that contained the water in the lake collapsed sending a flood of water into the Salt River bed which drained the lake.

St. Mary's Church-Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church

St. Mary's Church—Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, now All Saints Catholic Newman Center, is a historic church at College and University Avenue in Tempe, Arizona, United States. It was built in 1903 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. It has been home to the Arizona State University Newman Center since 1968.

Decision Theater

The Decision Theater at Arizona State University is an 8,000-square-foot visualization environment that accommodates up to 30 participants. The core component of the Decision Theater is the ‘drum’ comprising a 260-degree faceted screen, seven rear-projection passive stereo sources, tracking devices and surround sound. This enables data to be displayed and interacted with in a panoramic setting using 2D or 3D stereoscopic video. Unlike some visualization labs and flat-wall display facilities, the Decision Theater is an immersive environment designed for collaboration. Participants are often arranged in a conference configuration to improve human engagement with each other and to interact with the visual information around them. They can take advantage of a variety of tools to improve decision making including 3D and geospatial visualization, simulation models, system dynamics, and computer-assisted tools for collecting participant input and collaboration. They also have access to the university’s ongoing research in policy informatics, design, geography, computational science, business, psychology and mathematics. The facility is used by federal, state and local government agencies, community planners and policy makers in business to address complex problems ranging from hyper growth, and water resource management to disease monitoring. These fall into four domains: Urban growth, Public health, Education, and Environment. The Decision Theater concept originated in 2005 and reflects the university leadership’s desire to create a different type of visualization center, one focused on issues related to new urbanism, smart growth and sustainability. That vision called for the creation of a space where researchers at the university and community could explore common issues in a neutral setting.

Four Peaks Brewery

Four Peaks Brewery is an Arizona brewery and restaurant. The original and main location is in an old creamery and warehouse on 8th Street in Tempe, Arizona, about 1/2 mile east of the campus of Arizona State University. Nearby Scottsdale, Arizona boasts an additional location, and, in response to high demand, another Tempe brewing site will be up and running by the summer of 2012. The Tempe site was selected following a review of 25 potential sites, including the famed Sunkist facility in Mesa, Arizona and numerous warehouses in downtown Phoenix. The original Tempe location has a small display of Minnesota Viking and Elvis Presley paraphernalia. The brewing equipment is visible in the northern and western sections of this historical property. The building was built in 1892 as an ice plant. The current architecture dates back to 1927 when it was remodeled in a Mission Revival style. It served as a creamery until 1953. The selection at the brewery varies, but several favorites are available on tap, in bottles, in cans at local bars, and restaurants throughout the Southwestern United States. The brewery usually also has one or more Real ale ready to serve, and depending on the season, cult favorites like Pumpkin Porter may also be available. Four Peaks has gained nationwide notoriety in recent years as a result of earning numerous awards at the annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver, Colorado. Categories in which Four Peaks brews were recognized and awarded medals include Scottish Style Ale, American-Style Strong Pale Ale and English-Style Bitter, just to name a few. If seated inside the brewery itself, one will notice a blackboard listing all the beers and their alcohol content, which currently runs up to 12.0%.

Sun Devil Stadium

Sun Devil Stadium is an outdoor football stadium, located on the campus of Arizona State University, in Tempe, Arizona, United States. The stadiums current seating capacity is 65,870 and the playing surface is natural grass. Although the stadium is called Sun Devil Stadium, in 1996 the gridiron within the stadium was named Frank Kush Field in honor of the former coach of the ASU football team. It is home to the Arizona State Sun Devils, of the Pacific-12 Conference. It has previously been the home of the NFLs Arizona Cardinals, from 1988–2005 and was the annual site of the Fiesta Bowl, from 1971-2006 and the Cactus Bowl since then.

In conjunction with the transition of the mens ACHA club hockey team to Division I of the NCAA, the 24th varsity sport will be an NCAA women’s team: Rowing is among the favored possibilities. The Arizona State Sun Devils are members of the Pacific-12 Conference and have won 23 NCAA championships. Along with multiple athletic clubs and recreational facilities, ASU is home to more than 1,100 registered student organizations, reflecting the diversity of the student body. To keep pace with the growth of the student population, the university is continuously renovating and expanding infrastructure. The demand for new academic halls, athletic facilities, student recreation centers, and residential halls is being addressed with donor contributions and public-private investments. ASUs residential halls accommodate one of the largest residential populations in the nation.

Mona Plummer Aquatic Center

The Mona Plummer Aquatic Center is the aquatic center used by the Arizona State University Sun Devil swim team. It opened in 1981, costing four million dollars to build, and is named after Mona Plummer, a national championship winning coach who died in 1979. The complex consists of three pools, including an Olympic-size competition pool, a diving tower, and seating for 2,000. It is located on the ASU campus in Tempe, Arizona. The facility hosted the 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1998 Pac-10 Diving Championships, as well as the 1981, 1991, and 1999 NCAA Zone E Diving Championships. The venue is regarded as one of the best collegiate aquatic centers in the nation. In October 2011, a former swimmer drowned at the facility.
