Top Attractions in Isle of Arran

Caisteal Abhail

Caisteal Abhail is a mountain on the Isle of Arran in Scotland. It is the northernmost Corbett on the island. The mountain forms the main part of a view known as The Sleeping Warrior due to its distinctive outline as seen from the mainland. The most notable feature of the mountain is Ceum na Caillich , a deep gash in the eastern ridge. It is the northernmost peak in a chain of three Corbetts: Goat Fell is in fact an eastern outlier to this chain. The summit lies at the junction of four ridges: those running east, north and northwest eventually descend, whilst the southern ridge continues on to the central summit of the range, Cìr Mhòr. The summit is crowned with a series of rocky tors, and in poor visibility it may be difficult to ascertain which one marks the highest point. The mountain is most frequently climbed from North Glenn Sannox. There is a car park on the A841 road about 3 km west of Sannox. From here, the summit can be via the northern, northwestern or eastern ridge. Ascent over the eastern ridge requires the walker to negotiate Ceum na Caillich, a tricky scramble that is not easily by-passed. Ceum na Caillich and the eastern ridge may also be reached from the village of Sannox on the east coast of the island by way of Glen Sannox. The northwestern ridge can be climbed via a longer route following the Gleann Easan Biorach from Lochranza. An ascent of Caisteal Abhail is often combined with Cìr Mhòr, and indeed other Arran peaks. .

Kildonan Castle

Kildonan Castle stands in the small village of Kildonan on the southern coast of the Isle of Arran in Scotland. The castles name is derived from the name of a former resident, Saint Donan, who is said to be buried on the island. It was built in the 13th century by the MacDonalds, the Lords of the Isles. The castle stands on the cliffs, overlooking the island of Pladda and the entrance to the Firth of Clyde. It was built to defend against enemies attacking through the Firth. It was used as a hunting lodge by the Kings of Scotland, including Robert III, when the island belonged to the crown. The castle became the property of the Earls of Arran in 1544. Kildonan castle stands out on the old raised beach behind and above the village. It was once, with Lochranza Castle and Brodick Castle, one of three fortresses guarding Arrans strategically important position in the approaches to the Clyde. Todays Kildonan Castle is only a shadow of its former self, but still reflects its origins as a 13th Century keep. The castle was originally built by the Lords of the Isles, but by 1406 was in the ownership of Robert III, who in that year passed it on to his illegitimate son, John Stewart of Ardgowan. In 1544 it was acquired by the Hamilton family, the Earls of Arran. Kildonan Castle has long been ivy clad and unstable, making close examination a dangerous proposition. It also stands in the garden of a house, meaning that it can only be seen from a nearby right of way leading to the beach. Not far from the castle is an increasingly ruinous lookout tower, a relic from Kildonans days as the location of Arrans only Coastguard station, which moved to Lamlash in 1981.

Arran distillery

Arran distillery is a whisky distillery in Lochranza, Scotland, the only distillery on the Isle of Arran. In 1994 Arran Distillers was founded by Harold Currie, former director of Chivas with the intention of building a distillery on Arran. During the construction of the distillery, a pair of Golden Eagles built their nest on a cliff near the distillery; since Golden Eagles are a protected species, construction of the distillery was temporarily halted. The distillery opened in 1995. There used to be about fifty distilleries on the island, but most of them were "moonlight" or illegal distilleries. The most recent legally founded distillery on Arran, called 'Lagg', closed in 1837. Until recently a proportion of the casks were stored in the warehouses of Springbank, due to a lack of room in the distillery, and the legal impossibility of extending the current warehouses at the Arran distillery. However, the distillery now has a revolutionary storage warehouse, on site, that allows easier access to barrels. The distillery offers a cask purchase scheme which offers private individuals the opportunity to own their own cask of whisky, which can be stored on site at the distillery. The Arran Distillery is a patron of the World Burns Federation and as such has created a Robert Burns Single Malt and Robert Burns Blended Whisky in honour of Scotland's National Poet. They are the only whisky distillery to be able to use the image and signature of Robert Burns on their packaging. The whisky of Arran is mostly used to produce their Single Malt Whisky, but a small proportion also goes into the production of their range of blended whiskies : Lochranza Blend, Robert Burns Blend and Arran Gold Single Malt Whisky Cream Liqueur. The Arran Distillery is now owned by a group of private shareholders and the Managing Director is Euan Mitchell. 2010 saw the release of a 15th Anniversary bottling on the occasion of the Distillery Open Day on 3 July. Autumn 2010 also saw the release of the first official 14-year-old to be released by the Distillery. The first peated Arran Single Malt has been available since December 8, 2010.

Creag Ghlas Laggan

Creag Ghlas Laggan is a hill on the Isle of Arran in south-western Scotland. It is the highest point of the seven-mile-long ridge of land that runs north-west to south-east between the A841 road and the Sound of Bute in the north-eastern part of the island. It is classed as a Marilyn (a hill with topographic prominence of at least 150m). The best way up in terms of scenery is to follow the well-trodden and easily graded path from Lochranza to Bearradh Tom a' Muidhe at grid ref 962508, and strike south-east up the ridge from there. The shortest way up is a straight line from the parking area at Boguillie at grid ref 973483. The hill has a remarkable variety of geology. On its north-western slopes is the famous Hutton's Unconformity in the Dalradian metasediments. On the north-east shore can be found Carboniferous limestone and Permian desert deposits. At the south-eastern end is some Devonian Old Red Sandstone. Creag Ghlas Laggan offers stunning views towards Caisteal Abhail and the other peaks such as Goat Fell.
