Top Attractions in Ernakulam

Hill Palace

Hill Palace is the largest archaeological museum in Kerala, at Tripunithura, Kochi, near Karingachira area. It was the administrative office of Kochi Rajas. Built in 1865, the Palace complex consists of 49 buildings in the traditional architectural style, spreading across in 54 acres . The complex has an archaeological museum, a heritage museum, a deer park, a pre-historic park and a children’s park. The campus of the museum is home to several rare species of medicinal plants. Presently the palace has been converted into a museum by The Kerala State Archaeology Department and is open to public all days except Mondays from 9:00 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The palace is about 12 km from Ernakulam mainland and approachable by road and rail. The Centre for Heritage Studies; an autonomous research and training institute set up by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala also functions at the site. CHS is designated as the Manuscript Conservation Centre and Manuscript Resource Centre by the National Mission for Manuscripts.

Marine Drive, Kochi

Marine Drive is a picturesque promenade in Kochi, Kerala, India. It is built facing the backwaters, and is a popular hangout for the local populace. Ironic to its name, no vehicles are allowed on the walkway. Marine Drive is also an economically thriving part of the city of Kochi. With several shopping malls it is as an important centre of shopping activity in Kochi. Major fast food joints, including Marrybrown, DiMark, Coffee Bar are present along the walkway. The view of the setting and rising sun over the sea mouth, and the gentle breeze from the Vembanad Lake has made Marine Drive an important tourist destination in Kochi.Hundreds of people throng the walkway during the evenings. The walkway starts from the High Court Junction and continues until the Rajendra Maidan. There are also several boat jetties along the walkway. The walkway has two contemporarily constructed bridges, the Rainbow bridge and the Chinese Fishing Net Bridge.

Goshree bridges

Goshree bridges is a system of bridges that link the mainland side of the city of Kochi to the islands lying to the north of the backwaters. It provides the vital road connectivity to the islands of Bolgatty and Vallarpadam and also links the western island of Vypin to the mainland. The bridges start from the northern end of Marine Drive between High Court and Pachalam. The bridges are constructed by the Goshree Island Development Authority, constituted by the Government of Kerala. The construction was funded by the sale proceeds of reclaimed land adjacent to the bridge. The foundation stone was laid on 29 December 2000. The first segment between Ernakulam and Bolgatty was opened on 29 December 2003. The segment between Bolgatty and Vallarpadam was opened on 10 February 2004. The last segment was completed on 17 March 2004 and the entire bridge is formally opened on the 5th of June. The bridge is the only means road connectivity to the Bolgatty and Vallarpadam islands. The launching of the International Container Transshipment Terminal was made possible by these bridges. It also provides direct road connectivity to the city for the Vypin island and the suburbs to the northwest, which was relying upon ferry services earlier. The new container road NH from Mulavukad will link the Malabar, Cochin, North Paravur with mainland.

Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium

Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium is a multipurpose international stadium situated in Kochi, Kerala. The stadium has a capacity of 60,500 spectators making it one of the largest stadiums in India. The stadium was built in 1996 by the Government of Kerala with Greater Cochin Development Authority . The stadium is widely touted to be one of the most noisiest cricket stadium in the world due to its distinctive architecture. Originally constructed as a football stadium, it has played host to a number of international cricket and football matches. The extensive grounds of the stadium serve as venue for important exhibitions, cinema events and political rallies in the city. The most innovative aspect of the stadium is its unique lighting towers of 2 kW Floodlights which when switched on fully can provide lighting levels for HD telecast. The Structure of the tower is itself one of a kind in India. Greater Cochin Development Authority leased out the Jawaharlal Nehru International stadium at Kaloor to the Kerala Cricket Association for a period of 30 years. The stadium acts as the home ground for teams including Kerala cricket team, Kerala Blasters FC . Kochi is selected as one of the six host cities for 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup to be held in India. This stadium will be the venue for matches in Kochi.

Thrikkakara Temple

Thrikkakara Temple is one of the few temples in India dedicated to Lord Vamana. It is situated in Thrikkakara, a village panchayat near Kochi in the state of Kerala, South India. It is located 10 km north east of Ernakulam between Thrissur-Ernakulam highway, Seaport-Airport Road, Cochin University of Science and Technology and Model Engineering College. The temple houses lithic records of historic significance, and it finds mention in many of the hymns sung by the Tamil Vaishnavite Alwars, particularly Nammalvar of the 7th-9th century CE. It is also one of the 108 Divya Desams . The temple complex, which is enclosed in a large area in picturesque surroundings, holds the main sanctum dedicated to Lord Vamana. The sanctum sanctorum of the main shrine houses the idol of Maha Vishnu. The temple is under the administration of the Travancore Devaswom Board. The Temple festival is during Onam season, which falls on the month of August or September. The most important event of the religious calendar here is Onam. The Onasadya or the Onam feast is held in a grand manner in the temple with a large number of people cutting across religious barriers participating in it. In earlier times the Onam festival was jointly organized by the 61 Naduvazhis under the leadership of the Maharaja of Travancore. Communal harmony continues to be the hallmark of the celebrations, with people belonging to different faiths and religions turning out in large numbers for the Sadya in keeping with the spirit of the festival.

Vallarpadam Church

The Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom, Vallarpadam-Ernakulam is a famous centre of pilgrimage. People from all parts of Kerala and outside, irrespective of caste or creed go to the church to seek the blessings of Mary, the mother of Jesus, popularly known as "Vallarpadathamma". This is an ancient Christian Church built in 1524. Portuguese merchants headed by Vasco da Gama enthroned this miraculous picture of Our lady of Ransom at the shrine. The church was dedicated to the Holy Spirit, which was the first of its kind in Asia. The beautiful church was however destroyed by a heavy flood in 1676. The church was re-established in 1676 and the famous picture of the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected by Portuguese who brought it from their native land. The picture is believed to have miraculous powers. The Portuguese built the first church on the site of the present church in 1524. It was destroyed in a flood in the late 17th century and a new church was built on the same spot in 1676. It was declared a special church by Pope Leo XIII in 1888 and in 1951 the Union Government declared it a major pilgrim centre.

Rajagiri

Rajagiri is the provincial headquarters of the Sacred Heart Province, Kochi, and part of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate , an indigenous religious congregation founded in 1831. It is located on a small hill in the outskirts of the rapidly expanding urban center of Kochi, in the southern Indian state of Kerala. It was acquired after Indian independence and developed by the Sacred Heart province. The literal meaning of Raja Giri in the Malayalam language is the Hill of the King, where the King refers to Christ the King. Nowadays, Rajagiri is synonymous with Sacred Heart Province of the CMI congregation and its many social and educational institutions. CMI educational missions to date is a vast network of 448 institutions: over 200 schools, 14 university affiliated colleges, 1 engineering college, 12 technical institutes, 1 university, 1 medical college, 3 teacher training colleges, 5 special schools, 18 non formal educational institutions and 17 cultural centres which are spread all over India and a few located abroad. Due to constraints in space for the expansion of its various initiatives at the Kalamaserry campus, Rajagiri has extended into a new 90-acre campus on the banks of the Chitrapuzha river. This location is now called Rajagiri Valley, and is where Rajagiri has begun establishing a national science, arts and technology university Rajagiri Vidyapeetham. It has tied up with a leading Kochi based property developer RDS Projects Limited, to develop a modern university township.

Syro-Malabar Catholic Church

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church or Church of Malabar Syrian Catholics is an Eastern Catholic Major Archiepiscopal Church in full communion with the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. It is one of the 23 sui iuris Eastern Catholic Churches in the Catholic communion. The Church is headed by Major Archbishop Cardinal George Alencherry of the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly in Kerala, India. The members of the Church are or have been known at various times as Syrian Catholics, Nasranis, St. Thomas Christians, or Syro Malabar Catholics. It is the largest of the Nasrani denominations with around 4.6 million believers and traces its origins to the evangelistic activity of Thomas the Apostle in the 1st century. The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church follows a variant of the East Syrian Rite liturgy, traditionally attributed to saints Addai and Mari, which dates back to 3rd century Edessa, and like the Chaldean Rite is a Syro-Oriental Rite. It is the second largest Eastern Catholic Church, the largest being the Ukrainian Catholic Church. It is one of the two Eastern Catholic Churches from India, the other being the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church which follows the West Syrian Rite liturgy. Saint Alphonsa is the first canonized saint from the Church.

Ernakulam Shiva Temple

Ernakulam Shiva Temple, also known as Ernakulathappan Temple is one of the major temples of Kerala, located in heart of Ernakulam, the downtown area of the city of Kochi. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is considered as the city temple, with the presiding deity as the protector of the city, as per local Hindu faiths and traditions. As per the common practice in Kerala, the deity is reverently called Ernakulathappan, which means Lord of Ernakulam. The temple is located within the Durbar Hall Ground. The temple history itself has deep association with history of the city and was one of the 7 royal temples of Kochi Maharajas. The temple is now under administration of Cochin Devasom Board. The temple in its current form was built under active patronage of Diwan Sri Edakkunni Sankara Warrier in year 1846 and raised it level of a Royal temple in the Kochi Kingdom. The temple is built on 1-acre land. The temple is one of the major Shiva temples in Kerala counted along with the Ettumanoor Mahadevar Temple, Kaduthruthy Mahadeva Temple, Vaikom Temple, Chengannur Mahadeva Temple and Vadakkunathan temple.

Sree Poornathrayesa Temple

Sree Poornathrayesa temple is situated in Tripunithura, Kochi, the capital of the former Kingdom of Cochin. The temple is considered among the greatest temples in Kerala and was first among 8 royal temples of erstwhile Kochi Kingdom. The deity was also considered as National deity of Cochin and protector guardian of the town of Tripunithura. The temple is famous for its yearly Utsavams or festivals. The main one is the Vrishchikoltsawam, which is conducted every year in the month of Vrishchikam , kicking off the 'Ulsava' Season in Kerala. And this Vrishchikolsavam is the biggest temple festival of Ernakulam District and one of the biggest temple festivals of Kerala also. The deity in this temple is Lord Vishnu who is in the form of Santhanagopala Murthy. It is well believed that childless couples will be blessed with children on praying Poornathrayesan.

Chittoor Sree Krishnaswamy Temple

Chittoor Sree Krishnaswamy Temple, located at South Chittoor in the city of Kochi, is a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is a major temple under the Cochin Devaswom Board. For centuries the temple was closely associated with the Kartha family of Cheranelloor Swaroopam and was later taken over by Rama Varma Maharaja of Cochin Royal Family. It is a classic example of Kerala temple architecture. The sreekovil or sanctum sanctorum is square in shape, with a pyramidal roof covered with copper plates. Similar to the idol at Guruvayoor, the idol of Lord Krishna faces east in standing posture with 4 arms, carrying the conch named Panchajanyam, Sudarshana Chakra, Lotus and Gada. There is a small shrine of Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesh to the right of the inner sanctum. The outer sanctum is built with tiled roof, houses the temple kitchen, storage and preparation areas. The shrines of Naga, brahmarakshas and Bhagavathi are located outside the outer sanctum, but within the complex. The shrine of Lord Hanuman is located outside the west entrance to the complex. The temple pond, called Agnihotratheertham lies to the north of the complex. There is a huge statue of kaaliya mardanam, where Lord Krishna is shown standing on the hood of a huge serpant. This is in reference to the legend of the serpant Kaliya being banished by Lord Krishna.

St. Albert's College

St. Albert's College located at Kochi, India, started in 1946 an accredited first grade Arts, Science and Commerce College affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala, India. It has eighteen degree courses, twelve postgraduate courses and five research centres. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has accredited the College at the A level with an aggregate score of 3.23. And the UGC Peer team had visited the College for the Autonomy in October 2015. The college was founded by late Dr. Joseph Attippetty, the first Indian Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Verapoly. Archbishop Attippetty started a new college at Ernakulam, the then capital of the former State of Cochin. In 1946 the University of Madras permitted to set up a second grade college, which began functioning on 16 July 1946, in the old St.Albert’s High School building, situated in front of the present college campus with 150 students in the first year intermediate class. As of 2014 the college was under the patronage of His Grace The Most Rev. Dr. Francis Kallarakal, Metropolitan Archbishop of Verapoly, affiliated to the Mahatma Gandhi University.

Ernakulam Junction railway station

Ernakulam Junction is the largest railway station in the city of Kochi. The station has six platforms and two terminals (the Main entry and the Eastern entry). It is a junction, joining lines going in four different directions namely: north towards Shornur, south towards Alappuzha, south-west towards Willingdon Island and east towards Kottayam. This station has 6 platforms to handle long distance trains and local trains. The station is operated by the Southern Railway zone of the Indian Railways and comes under the Thiruvananthapuram railway division. It is one of the major railway stations in Kerala with trains to any part of India and also one of the A1 graded stations in the Southern Railway. The Station also has a Train Care Centre in its premises. Another major railway station in downtown Kochi is the Ernakulam Town Railway Station. Besides this there are numerous railway stations in the Greater Cochin Region. Because of the loop structure of the tracks, trains going from the Thrissur side to the Kottayam side via Ernakulam Junction have to reverse their directions, whereas those going to the Alappuzha do not face this problem. Ernakulam Junction is one of the most important stations in India. It is the largest of the 3 major stations serving the city other being Ernakulam north and Aluva railway station. It is the second busiest in terms of no of trains after aluva. Even though there have been many proposals to convert Ernakulam junction into a world class station, no development activity is happening at present. Ernakulam Junction was the first railway station in Kerala to have an escalator. It was installed on 9 September 2013.
