Top Attractions in Vadodara

Sayajigunj

Sayajigunj is an area in the western side of Vadodara City in the state of Gujarat in India. Vadodara Railway Station and Central State Transport Bus depot is located in Sayajigung, which is why it is referred as a gate way to Vadodaracity. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara Stock Exchange and Sayaji Baug are also located in this area. This area has attraction of youngster, due to the fact area being close to University, Some Major Hotels are located in this area, to name some Sayaji, Surya Palace, Kalyan(one of the oldest fast food restaurant in area), Dairy Den , recently Amul has opened one retail counter in this area. Subway has also established its presence in Sayajigunj. Mostly, area is covered with stock brokers offices, hotels for stay, restaurants, banks, commercial Complex and University.

Kirti Mandir

Kirti Mandir, or Temple of Fame, is the cenotaph of the Gaekwads, located in the city of Vadodara. It was built by Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III of the Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathasto perpetuate the glorious memory of his beloved ancestors. The sun, the moon and the earth in bronze with the undivided map of India adorn the shikhara of Kirti Mandir. It was built in 1936 as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. The temple houses five wall paintings by artist Raja Ravi Varma showing various phases of battle of Mahabharata.The city of Vadodara, also popularly known as Baroda, used to be the seat of the Gaekwad or Gaikwad monarchs. It was formerly called by many names. The city was referred to as Chandravati, then Viravati, and Vadpatra due to the great quantity of banyan trees on the River banks of Vishwamitri. Kirti Mandir is situated in the city of Vadodara .It is a collection of temples built by Sayajirao Maharajah near the Vishwamitra Bridge of the city. It is believed that Sayajirao Maharaja built this Kirti Mandir in the memory of deceased members of the royal Gaekwad family and the edifice is dedicated to Lord Mahadev. Today it is a major tourist attraction in the city. The outstanding stone building is constructed in the shape of a letter “E” with terraces, balconies, domes and a central shikhara that rises to approximately 35 metres. The interiors of the Kirti Mandir are marble treated and brilliantly decorated with intricately carved murals. The walls of the central hall are adorned with many impressive murals such as the Gangavataran, Life of Meera, battle of Mahabharat and Natir Poojan which are all very well preserved works from the renowned Bengali artist Nandalal Bose. Statues as well as precious photographs of eminent members of the Gaekwad family are also displayed for public viewing. According to annals of history, the golden era in the Maratha rule of Baroda commenced when Sayajirao Maharaja came into power in 1875. He is well remembered by people even today for his work to establish necessary primary education, a university, a library system, tile factories and model textile and thereby modernize Baroda, which resulted in building the image of Baroda as a modern industrial hub. In addition to the Kirti Mandir, Vadodara has a number of diverse attractions such as palaces, buildings, monuments, gardens, museums as well as modern entertainment. For the tourist there are endless possibilities to indulge in sightseeing. Though the town is lesser known compared to other major tourist attractions in India. Vadodara’s one of the tourist attraction is Kirti Mandir situated on the north of the statue of Prince Fatehsinhrao Gaekwad near the Vishwamitri Bridge. With a cluster of shiva temples it was built to commemorate the cremation of the members of the Gaekwad family. This “E” shaped large magnificent stone building with domes, terraces, balconies and central shikhara rising to about 33 metres. According to Sayajirao Gaekwad it was built to commemorate the benefactors of his state irrespective of their race, caste or creed. The Kirti Mandir of Baroda was built at the cost of Rs.50,000, it preserves in its various rooms the statues and photographs of the members of the royal family. The interior of this elegant structure is marble finished and on the walls of the central hall are the murals Gangavataran, battle of Mahabharat, Life of Meera and Natir Pooja-executed by the famous Bengali artist Nandalal Bose. . The Kirti Mandir in Vadodara is actually a cluster of temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temples were constructed by His Highness Maharaj Sayajirao Gaekwad in 1936, on the occasion of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Also known as the Temple of Fame, it is situated near the picturesque Vishwamitra Bridge of the city, in the memory of deceased members of the royal Gaekwad family. The marble treated interiors of the Kirti Mandir is wonderfully decorated with intricately carved murals.The characteristic ‘shikhara’ of this statuesque monument represents the sun, the moon and the earth in bronze with the undivided map of India.

Nazarbaug Palace

Nazarbaug Palace or Nazar Bāgh Palace was the Gaekwad's royal palace in the city of Vadodara, Gujarat state, western India. The Nazar Bāgh Palace' was built in 1721. It had three storeys and is the oldest palace in Baroda. It was constructed by Malhār Rāo Gaekwad in the late 19th century. This palace was used on ceremonial occasions by the Gaekwads. Till recently, it housed the royal family heirlooms. It had solid gold and silver guns, each barrel weighing over 100 kg. In the grounds it also has contains the Shïsh Mahal, a Palace of Glass. The Palace had a classic look, so in Gujarati it was told about its look as 'Nazar na laage' from which it was named Nazar. The Palace also had beautiful garden from which its name included baug. So it was named as Nazarbaug Palace. The white-stucco palace was the depository of the jewels of the Gaekwad family, and in 1927 the collection was believed to be worth $10,000,000 at the time, including a diamond necklace which carried both the Star of the South diamond, weight around 125 carats, and the English Dresden; another important part of the collection was a cloth embroidered with precious stones and seed pearls, made to cover the tomb of Muḥammad. The palace was in a state of ruin and does not reflect its former glory. The inside was ripped out after an alleged robbery. The grounds was used as a car park. Visitors are allowed to walk around but not allowed to take photos. Such is the state of this once beautiful palace the root of Gaekwad rule in Vadodara that today it is unrecognisable and possibly the land will be sold off for apartment constructions. In October, 2014, the palace has been completely razed with only rubble and some parts of the floor now remaining.

Manjalpur

— Manjalpur is a major area in Vadodara city of the Gujarat state in India. The area code is 390011. Manjalpur is one of the finest residential area with upper middle class of Vadodara. Developed finely with good infrastructure. Area which was known to be a remote place, now coming up with good shopping and residential complexes and it has been among one of the best choices for home buyers. Manjalpur has best of the Hospitals in the recent times like Sunshine Global Hospitals, Spandan Hospital,etc. Manjalpur is housed by most of the businessmen of the city as it is next to Gujarat Industrial and Development corporation . Manjalpur fly over near Lalbaug is one of the biggest fly over in Vadodara connected from Manjalpur to Raj Mahal road and from Pratap Nagar to Viswamitri bridge. Manjalpur has famous schools like Shreyas Vidyalaya, Vidyakunj High School, Don Bosco High School, Bharatiya Vidhya Bhavan High School, Baroda High School , Kendriya Vidyalaya, Little Flowers School, Mahatma Gandhi High School, Panchsheel High School, Auxillium High School etc. Famous spots in this area are Saraswati Complex, Silver Coin, Indra Complex, Darbar Chokdi, Manjalpur Naka, Deep Chambers, Tulsidhaam Chokdi and Virjdham Mandir. From this area a daily newspaper called Vadnagari in Gujarati is published.

Hazira Maqbara

The mausoleum known as Hazira contains the graves of Qutb-ud-din Muhammad Khan who was the tutor of Salim, son and successor of Akbar, and also that of his son Naurang Khan who held important offices in Gujarat under Akbar. Qutb-ud-din was uncle of Mirza Aziz Koka foster brother of Akbar and Governor of Gujarat thrice in between 1573 AD. To 1583 AD. He was killed in 1583 by Muzaffar III in the last sultan of Gujarat. Built on high octagonal platform with smaller gates on the cardinal directions and five arches on each side. It is in the style of Mughal tombs at Delhi. The real grave is in an underground chamber and the false grave in the tomb chamber. The Quranic texts in Arabic are carved, inside tomb chamber, on lintels, arches and also above Jali work on eastern side walls. The extant parapet wall on the roof terrace is embellished with Merlon designs in brick red color evident from the traces. The lower portion of cylindrical dome surrounding the tomb was covered with thick plaster of brick red color, The mausoleum has a double dome and seems to have been a garden tomb and vav or step well to its across west the modern road was perhaps used for supplying the water to the garden

Sayaji Baug

Sayaji Baug is a garden located in Vadodara, Gujarat, India. Sayaji Baug was dedicated to the citizens of Vadodara by Maharaja Sayaji Rao Gaekwad III in 1879. Sayajirao III built Sayaji Baug, well known as Kamati Baug, on the river Vishwamitri. Sayaji Baug is the largest garden in Western India, stretching over 113 acres . It has a rich flora of more than 98 species of trees. The garden is home to the Baroda Museum Picture Gallery, the Sardar Patel Planetarium, and the Sayaji Baug Zoo. There are three entrance Gate First is at Sayaji square and 3rd one is at Ranapratab square and secound is in between first and Third. First Entrance gate is just nearby to Vadodara Railway Station and new Bus Stand .This is one of the finest Garden in India, and is maintained by Vadodara Municipal Corporation. Thousands of Citizens of the city do come here for morning walk as well as for pleasant view of the Garden

Sursagar Lake

Sur Sagar lake also known as the Chand Talao is a lake situated in middle of the city of Vadodara in the State of Gujarat in India. The lake was rebuilt with stone masonry in the 18th Century. The water in this lake remains in it for the whole year. A concrete wall surrounds the lake on which the people use to sit. A 120 ft tall statue of lord Shiva built by the Vadodara Mahanagar Seva Sadan stands in the middle of the lake. There are many underwater gates in the lake which empty the lake if it overflows. The water from the lake empties in the Vishvamitra River. The lake is used for boating. The statue of Lord Shiva is lit with lights on Mahashivratri. As of 2015, boating has been prohibited in the lake for various issues. The lake also serves as idol visarjan spots in various occasions such as Ganesh and Durga Puja.

Baroda Museum & Picture Gallery

The famous museum was built in 1894 on the lines of Victoria & Albert and Science Museums of London. Major Mant in association with R.F. Chisholm who refined some of Mant's finest works to make genuine Indo-Saracenic architecture designed the Building of this Museum. It preserves a rich collection of art, sculpture, ethnography & ethnology. Several of the paintings are not only original but masterpieces at the picture gallery. The picture gallery which offers an excellent collection of originals by famous British painters Turner and constable and many others attract tourists from every part of the country. The Egyptian mummy and skeleton of a blue whale are major attractions for those who visit the museum. Other treasure includes the famous Akota bronzes dating the 5th Century AD, A collection of Mughal miniatures, a full-fledged gallery of Tibetan Art and oils by several European masters. Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III belonging to the Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas founded the museum in 1887. The museum building was completed in 1894, when it opened to the public. Construction of the art gallery commenced in 1908, was completed in 1914, but did not open until 1921 as the First World War delayed transfer of pieces from Europe intended for the gallery.

Nyay Mandir

The "Nyaya Mandir", means Temple of Justice, is a piece of Byzantine architecture in India. It houses the District Court of Vadodara city in the state of Gujarat, western India. The central hall is decorated with mosaic tiles and a statue of Chimnabai, wife of Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III. Parts of the historical building have been damaged and yellow Italian marble tiles on its exterior have started to come off at some places. At several locations, one can see plaster coming off even as the grills of the windows and galleries of the structure are damaged. Superintending engineer of the department, AK Patel said the renovation was among the work taken up for the golden jubilee celebration of Gujarat's statehood. Patel said the renovation and restoration work would be conducted under expert advice. He said the exterior of the building will be cleaned. Its roof is already being repaired. Patel said the work on the building will be completed by March next year. The restoration and renovation will take care of all the damages to the building so far. The restoration work was kicked off by district judge Atul Vakil.

Karelibaug

Karelibaug is an area towards the north of the city of Vadodara in the state of Gujarat in India. It is the most developed and easily approachable to all parts of vadodara city. Almost all major schools, marriage party plots, temples, malls, food markets and university are within a mile radius of karelibaug area. Airport, railway station and bus depot are near by. All state highwyas, national highways and express way are within a mile to karelibaug area. Historically, it was one of the earliest areas to be developed outside the downtown Vadodara region. A sizeable portion of middle-income group in Vadodara choose to stay here. The Swaminarayan Temple in Karelibaug is one of the most famous temples of Vadodara. The founder of this Temple is Sadguru Shree Gyanjivandasji Swami(Kundaldham).

Baroda college

The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is a university in the city of Vadodara, in Gujarat state, India. Originally known as the Baroda College of Science , it became a university in 1949 after the independence of the country. It was later renamed after its benefactor Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the former ruler of Baroda State belonging the royal Gaekwad dynasty of the Marathas. It is a teaching and residential university and the only university in Gujarat whose medium of instruction is English for all courses. University has Faculty Of Sciences, which is recognized as one of the renowned Science Departments in India, having maximum number of Staffs to Students in Department of Physics in India. India Today has ranked it at tenth place in their list of India's best universities. while Hindustan Times has ranked it at sixth place.
