Ethel M Chocolate Factory and Botanical Cactus Gardens

The Ethel M Chocolate Factory is located in Henderson, Nevada and continues to produce gourmet premium chocolate for all of the Ethel M and Ethel's brand chocolates. The company distributes their products mainly via phone and internet on their website , although they also operate several retail outlets located in and around Las Vegas, Nevada. Also located at this plant are the Ethel M Botanical Cactus Gardens (which feature over 300 species of desert plants), and a small branch of M&M's World. A part of the factory is open to the public and visitors can take self-guided tours. Customers who visit the Ethel M Chocolates factory and cactus garden are welcome to take a free self-guided tour of the botanical cactus garden and gourmet chocolate factory to learn about premium chocolate making and the traditions of Mars Inc. chocolate making. The botanical cactus garden is also host to several community events throughout the year, including the Cactus Lighting Event hosted every November. Ethel M is owned by Mars, Incorporated and was named after the mother of Forrest Mars, Sr. The company is perhaps most known for its fine liqueur-filled chocolates.Forrest E. Mars, Sr. created Ethel M Chocolates in 1978, which opened in 1980, as a project to cure the boredom he experienced after retiring. According to researcher J.G. Brenner, "Forrest established the venture in Nevada because it is one of the few states that allowed the sale of liqueur-filled cordials." He started Ethel M with two of his past associates, Alan Thomas, as General Manager, and Dean Musser, as CFO. Mars commissioned engineer Stephen H. Edelblute to design and build the factory, former candy factory owner Fred Dent to assist in developing his chocolates and Karen Grover, a recent research assistant. Within a few years of its opening "the company had reached annual sales of $150 million, from seventy Ethel M stores throughout the West." In 2007 introduced a new line of 48 different handmade-gourmet chocolates designed by master chocolatier Jin Caldwell. In late 2007 the company responded to public demand for the classic line of chocolates by re-releasing six varieties of chocolates in their retail stores in the Las Vegas area. Other than at the factory (located at 2 Cactus Garden Drive), Ethel's stores can be found in Nevada at the California Hotel, and Gates A-D of McCarran International Airport.

Ethel M Botanical Cactus Garden

Ethel M Botanical Cactus Gardens is a 3-acre botanical garden located at the Ethel M Chocolate Factory, 2 Cactus Garden Drive, Henderson, Nevada. The gardens, and the factory itself, are open to the public with no admission charge. The Botanical Cactus Gardens also include a "Living Machine", their name for a demonstration waste water treatment facility. Using bacteria, algae, protozoa, snails and fish, the facility recycles 100 percent of the chocolate factorys waste water without the use of any chemicals. The water is recycled for use in providing water for the gardens. The ponds from the waste water facility attract many of the birds that inhabit the gardens. Throughout the year the Botanical Cactus Gardens are host to several community events including the annual cactus garden lighting. The cactus garden holiday lights show is hosted in November and December and is free to the general public.

Railroad Pass Casino

Railroad Pass Hotel Casino, named after nearby Railroad Pass, is a casino and hotel in Henderson, Nevada. The property is sited in the far southeast corner of the city of Henderson, where it meets the northwestern portion of Boulder City, and is sandwiched between Boulder Highway and the currently orphaned portion of the Boulder City spur on the Union Pacific Railroads Henderson branch line. The initial phase of the Nevada Department of Transportations Boulder City Bypass highway project will reconnect those tracks after relocating and upgrading this portion of the Boulder Highway to full freeway status by 2015, with a new traffic interchange and a dedicated access road maintaining full connectivity to this casino/hotel. The trailhead for the River Mountains Loop Trail is adjacent to the casino. The original junction of highways 93 and 95 was also once located in front of the property, before the present-day interchange between these two routes was constructed about one mile to the east in Boulder City.

Frenchman Mountain

Frenchman Mountain is located east of Las Vegas in the U.S. state of Nevada. Made up of rocks similar to those found on the bottom of the Grand Canyon, Frenchman Mountain formed when faulting elevated and tilted the rocks followed by erosion, giving it its sharp triangular profile. It is the site of the Great Unconformity with the tilted Paleozoic strata underlain by Paleoproterozoic Vishnu Schist, which is some of the oldest rock on the North American continent, having been created about two billion years ago. The peak lies on a north to north-northeast trending ridge about 2000 feet above the nearby valleys. Sunrise Mountain lies 3.6 miles to the northeast adjacent to Nellis Air Force Base. The north end of the McCullough Range about 12 miles to the south has a parallel trend. The River Mountains lie to the southeast. State Route 147 crosses its northern slope. A geologically rich area called Rainbow Gardens is located to its southeast, as is an igneous laccolith, Lava Butte. The Frenchman Mountain Fault is a potential earthquake danger to the region. It is commonly, and mistakenly, referred to as Sunrise Mountain, the name of a smaller peak to the north of Frenchman Mountain. The area from Cheyenne Avenue and Boulder Highway and Lamb Boulevard is commonly known as Sunrise Manor Township CDP.

Rio Secco Golf Club

Rio Secco Golf Club is a country club and golf course located in the affluent Seven Hills neighborhood of Henderson, in the Las Vegas Valley. The course has hosted the annual Tiger Woods Jam and other charity and competitive events including the VegasGolfer Pro Showdown. The golf course was recently honored as the 19th best public golf course in the western United States. The course was also ranked in the Top 10 in Nevada by Golfweek Magazine. Rio Secco Golf Club was designed and built in 1997 by golf course architect Rees Jones. When Rio Secco opened in 1997, Golf Digest and Golf Magazine voted it among the top ten new public courses. Rio Secco features six holes through steep canyons, six holes on a plateau overlooking the city and six holes in a broad desert mountain range. The range is 5778 to 7332 feet.

Railroad Pass

Railroad Pass, 2367 ft , is a mountain pass through the Black Hills of the River Mountains in the southeastern portion of the city of Henderson, Nevada, which is part of the Las Vegas metropolitan area. Traversed by the Union Pacific Railroad's Boulder City spur of the Henderson branch line and by the Boulder Highway , the pass connects Henderson with Boulder City. In 1998, the Nevada Department of Transportation paved over the at-grade crossing of the railroad tracks on Boulder Highway. The sharp skew angle at this junction, high speeds on the highway, and little to no rail usage made this dangerous crossing a prime candidate for elimination. However, the historical significance of this rail spur and future potential for use by excursion and/or commuter trains merited its preservation. The initial phase of NDOT's Boulder City Bypass project will result in a new grade separation of the highway by 2015, allowing the rails to be reconnected so trains can once again reach Boulder City via Railroad Pass. The Railroad Pass Hotel/Casino, is sited along Boulder Highway on the south side of the pass. Opened in 1931, it is one of the oldest casinos still operating in Nevada.

Nevada State College

Nevada State College is a four-year public college located in Henderson, Nevada, and is part of the Nevada System of Higher Education . The college opened on September 3, 2002, and its main campus is located on a 509 acres site in the southern foothills of Henderson, Nevada. The college was founded as Nevadas first state college. Nevada State College has around 3,300 undergraduate students from a wide variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In terms of minority or underrepresented students at NSC, close to 20% of the student body is Hispanic/Latino, 11% is Black or African American, 10% is Asian, and 2% is Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander. The colleges average student age is 29, and 61% of its students attend part-time. The vast majority of Nevada State Colleges students are from Nevada. Nevada State Colleges enrollment as a whole has grown from 177 students in 2002 to 3,389 in 2012 making it one of the fastest growing institutions of higher education in the country on a percentage basis. During this period, however, some of Nevada State Colleges programs suffered from lower than expected enrollments. However, enrollment for 2010 increased by 23.3% compared to the year before. Nevada State Colleges six-year graduation rate in 2010 was 21%, a roughly 10% increase from its 2008 six-year graduation rate. From 2004 to 2010, 1214 students have graduated from NSC, over 500 of them earning nursing degrees. Approximately 45% of Nevada State Colleges students are first-generation college students. An equivalent percentage are members of racial or ethnic minorities. Campus activities and organizations include student government and a student-run newspaper, The Scorpions Tale. Nevada State College does not currently have any varsity sports teams, but it offers a few club sports. The schools colors are black and gold and its mascot is a scorpion.
