Top Attractions in Saint Kitts and Nevis

St. Thomas Lowland

Saint Thomas Lowland is one of 5 Nevis parishes which are in turn part of the 14 administrative parishes that make up the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. Leeward Islands, Lesser Antilles, West Indies. The coast of this parish consists primarily of sand beaches, most notably the 3-mile long Pinney's Beach. Behind the sandy coastline are several small lagoons, including the freshwater lagoon of Nelson's Spring, which is next to the village of Cotton Ground. Some of the island's most important hotel developments are located in this area, including the Four Seasons Resort Nevis. The small but steep hill at Cades Point is a weathered remnant of an ancient volcanic core. Further inland, many small villages and homes are located on the gently sloping landscape which gradually rises up towards Nevis Peak. Further inland as the elevation increases, the vegetation becomes more lush because of higher rainfall on the steeper slopes of Nevis Peak. The summit of the Peak is the Parish's interior land boundary.

St. George Gingerland

Saint George Gingerland, also known as St. George's Gingerland, is a parish in the southeastern part of the island of Nevis, Leeward Islands, West Indies. It is one of five parishes on the island, and has a total population of about 2,500. The five parishes, in combination with the nine parishes of St. Kitts, make up the fourteen administrative parishes of the two-island Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The parish is commonly referred to as Gingerland, and is named after the valuable ginger crop that used to be grown there. The Anglican parish church of Saint George is located within the main village of Market Shop, and Gingerland also encompasses numerous other villages such as Chicken Stone, Zetlands and Zion. Gingerland is one of the most populous parishes on Nevis, primarily because the higher parts of the parish have fertile soil and good rainfall. The parish is on the windward side of the island (meaning that it faces into the trade winds). Many of the villages in Gingerland are situated at an altitude of nearly 1,000 feet (over 300 meters), making them considerably cooler than coastal villages (especially at night). Gingerland supplies most of Nevis with fresh fruits and vegetables. The farms are mostly small holdings, where crops are grown for private consumption and for sale. The livestock include sheep and goats, which wander and graze freely; and pigs, cows and horses, which are either fenced or tethered. Feral donkeys roam freely. On the coast around Indian Castle, fishing is important economically. Tourism is an important industry in Gingerland. The main buildings of hotels such as Old Manor and Golden Rock Estate were originally sugarcane plantation "great houses", and some of the other plantation buildings, including the old windmills, have been turned into guest suites or dining areas. A third plantation hotel in the parish is Montpelier Plantation, which is situated not far from the Botanic Garden. The island's racetrack is located in the area near Red Cliff, and the well-attended Nevis horse races take place at approximately monthly intervals.

Mount Liamuiga

Mount Liamuiga is a 3,792 feet stratovolcano which forms the western part of the island of Saint Kitts. The peak is the highest point on the island of Saint Kitts, in the federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and in the entire British Leeward Islands, as well as one of the tallest peaks in the eastern Caribbean archipelago. The peak is topped by a 0.6 miles wide summit crater, which contained a shallow crater lake until 1959. As of 2006, the crater lake had re-formed. The last verified eruptions from the volcano were about 1,800 years ago, while reports of possible eruptions in 1692 and 1843 are considered uncertain. Mount Liamuiga was formerly named Mount Misery. The renaming took place on the date of St. Kitts independence, September 19, 1983. However, many older citizens still refer to it as Mount Misery. The name Liamuiga is derived from the Kalinago name for the entire island of St. Kitts, which means, "fertile land." The mountain sides are covered in farmland and small villages up to the 1,500 feet height, after which lush tropical rainforests drape the slopes until cloud forest takes over at 3,000 ft . Many tours and guided hikes are organized to the peaks summit and surrounding rainforests, usually starting from Belmont Estate in the village of St. Pauls. From the summit, the views are outstanding, including the entire island and the beautiful Caribbean Sea, as well as the neighbouring islands of Saba, Statia, St. Barths, St. Martin, Antigua, and Nevis.

Charlestown

Charlestown is the capital of the island of Nevis, in the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Leeward Islands, West Indies. Charlestown is situated on the leeward side of the island of Nevis, near the southern end of Pinneys Beach. Historically, in colonial times, the town of Charlestown was protected by Fort Charles to the south and Fort Black Rocks to the north. Many of the oldest two-story stone buildings were severely damaged over time by earthquakes, which tended to cause the upper story to collapse into the lower story. This unfortunate design flaw lead to the common practice of building a wooden upper floor above a stone ground floor. Charlestown was the birthplace and childhood home of Alexander Hamilton. The restored stone building which was his place of birth now houses the Museum of Nevis History on the ground floor, and the Nevis Island Administration Assembly Room on the upper floor. There are two other museums in Charlestown: the Nelson Museum, and the Nevis Sport Museum, as well as the Philatelic Bureau. There are many other important buildings in the town, some historical and some recent, such as the Post Office, the old Treasury Building which is now the Nevis Tourism Authority, the Court House and Public Library, the new Police Station and the Alexandra Hospital. At the northern end of town is the Bath Hotel and Spring House, which was a famous tourist hotel and spa during the 18th century. The main building of the Bath Hotel is now occupied by government offices. Charlestown has a population of 1,500. It is the main administrative and commercial center for the island of Nevis, and is also the most concentrated residential area on the island. It is the hub for much of the transportation in Nevis. There is a modern port area with a dock where the ferries from St. Kitts load and unload passengers. However, Charlestown lacks a commercial airport. Memorial Square commemorates all the Nevisian soldiers who died during World Wars I and II. Nearby is the Cotton Ginnery Mall which supplies some of Nevis' residents' recreational shopping needs. The education system on Nevis is similar to the British system. There are five pre-schools and seven primary schools . Primary schools are government-provided. Nevis Peak

Nevis Peak is a potentially active volcano which is located in the centre of the island of Nevis of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the West Indies. The stratovolcano rises to a height of 985 metres and is the highest point on the island. There have been no eruptions since prehistory, but there are active fumaroles and hot springs on the coastal slopes of the island, and these represent low-level volcanic activity. The steeper parts of Nevis Peak are impossible to farm. During the height of the islands exploitation, when every available scrap of arable land was under sugar cane, the mountain, which occupies a large part of the islands interior, was never really changed in any way and therefore most of the original flora and fauna is still intact. At the lower levels of the mountain there is dry forest and humid forest, and then above that rain forest. At the top of the peak, which is covered with cloud most of the time, there is cloud forest, a montane habitat. It is possible to hike to the top of the peak and back, but the route has some challenging sections. Hikers need to be quite physically fit to complete this route, and for safetys sake, it is necessary to go with a qualified guide. On days when the peak is completely free of clouds, there are remarkable views from the top of the mountain, not only of Nevis itself, but also out over the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the many surrounding islands of the Leeward Island chain. The fauna of the mountain includes birds such as the Red-necked pigeon and the Bridled quail dove, as well as many troops of the African Green Vervet monkey, which was introduced in the historical past and has become naturalized. The flora of Nevis Peak includes five different kinds of tree fern, some Heliconia species, and a number of small wild orchid species.

St. James Windward

Saint James Windward is the largest of five parishes on the island of Nevis. These five parishes are in turn part of the 14 administrative parishes making up the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, in the Leeward Islands, Lesser Antilles, West Indies. Saint James Parish is located in the northeastern section of the island of Nevis and the parish capital is Newcastle, which is next to the Nevis airport. Not far east from Newcastle is the hotel Nisbet Plantation Beach Club, and the Newcastle Pottery. A small distance further east still is the Medical University of the Americas. In terms of land area, Saint James is the largest in Saint Kitts and Nevis, but it is also the least populated, as it mainly consisting of small communities separated by larger areas of dry scrub. The villages in this parish include Newcastle, Rawlins, Mount Lily, Fountain, Camps, Burnaby, Hicks, Brick Kiln, Whitehall, and Butlers. All the Nevis parishes were drawn up to include a segment of Nevis Peak itself, but this parish also includes a secondary peak at 1901 feet, which is unnamed on the Ordnance Survey map, but which is locally known as "Butlers Peak" because it is near the village of Butlers. The parish also includes an ancient weathered volcanic core called Round Hill and a smaller coastal core called Hurricane Hill. The northern coast of Saint James Parish has several long sandy beaches: Lover's Beach, Newcastle Beach and Long Haul Bay. The more easterly part however is mostly rocky coast. Behind Butler's peak, there is flourishing rain forest. At the southern end of the parish there are extensive colonial sugarcane plantation ruins, at Eden Brown Estate, New River Estate and Coconut Walk Estate.

Siege of Brimstone Hill

The French invasion of Saint Kitts also known as the Siege of Brimstone Hill (19 January – 13 February 1782) was a siege of the American Revolutionary War. After landing on Saint Kitts, the French troops of the Marquis de Bouillé stormed and besieged Brimstone Hill, and after a month of siege the heavily outnumbered and cut-off British garrison surrendered. The Comte de Grasse, who delivered de Bouillé's troops and supported the siege, was outmanoeuvred and deprived of his anchorage by Admiral Hood. Even though Hood's force was inferior by one-third, de Grasse was beaten off when he attempted to dislodge Hood. Hood's attempts to relieve the ongoing siege were unsuccessful, and the garrison capitulated after one month. About a year later, the Treaty of Paris restored Saint Kitts and adjacent Nevis to British rule.
