Allahbad

Allahabad , also known as Prayag प्रयाग and Ilahabad, is a city in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and the administrative headquarters of Allahabad District, the most populous district in the state. As of 2011, Allahabad is the seventh most populous city in the state, fifteenth in the Northern India and thirty-sixth in India, with an estimated population of 1.11 million in the city and 1.21 million in its metropolitan region. In 2011 it was ranked the world's 130th fastest-growing city. Allahabad, in 2013, was ranked the third most liveable city in the state (after Noida and Lucknow) and twenty-ninth in the country. The city's original name – Prayag प्रयाग, or "place of offerings" – comes from its position at the Sangam (confluence) of the Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Sarasvati rivers. It is the second-oldest city in India, and plays a central role in Hindu scriptures. Allahabad was originally called Kaushambi (now a separate district) by the Kuru rulers of Hastinapur, who developed it as their capital. Since then, Allahabad has been a political, cultural and administrative centre of the Doab region. Mughal emperor Akbar renamed it Ilahabad, which the British changed to Allahabad. In 1833 it became the seat of the Ceded and Conquered Provinces region before its capital was moved to Agra in 1835. Allahabad became the capital of the North-Western Provinces in 1858, and was the capital of India for a day. The city was the capital of the United Provinces from 1902 to 1920 and remained at the forefront of national importance during the struggle for Indian independence. Located in southern Uttar Pradesh, the city's metropolitan area covers 70.5 km2 (27.22 sq miles). Although the city and its surrounding area are governed by several municipalities, a large portion of Allahabad District is governed by the Allahabad City Council. The city is home to colleges, research institutions and central and state government offices. Allahabad has hosted cultural and sporting events, including Kumbh Mela and the Indira Marathon. Although the city's economy was built on tourism, most of its income now derives from real estate and financial services.

St. Joseph's College

St. Joseph's College, founded in the nineteenth century by the Capuchin Friars of the province of Ancona & Bologna, Italy, is the best CICSE school in Allahabad under the management of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Allahabad. The school began with a small parochial school for the Cathedral Parish located first in a rented house. The foundation stone of the nucleus of the present building was laid by Rt. Rev. Dr. Peschi on 1 January 1884. Bishop Poli called this little school St. Joseph’s Collegiate. In 1887 it was recognized as a middle school; it was recognized as ‘European High School’ affiliated to Cambridge University. In 1907, it came directly under the Bishop & the parish priest of the Cathedral. It was handed over to the Irish Christian brothers of Nainital in 1908 & they looked after till 1916 when Bishop Gamigna took it over. With a boarding of 26 students, the total went up to 63 in 1920. Another story was put up in 1922 by Rev. Fr. Camilus, OFM Cap. The coming of the new head master in 1921 in the person of Msgr. O. Hogan who graduated from the Allahabad University & trained in Oxford, put the school on the top of academic results. This excellence was continued by his successors such as Fr. A. G. Rego & still continues to be the top school of the city. The school building was further extended with the class 7th & 8th block, Chemistry Lab block put up by Rev. Fr. Augustine between 1932-1942. In the 1960s the Class IX-X block & the junior section block was built along with a large auditorium, a gymnasium & a swimming pool by Re. Fr. Cyril E. George. The boarding was closed in 1980 & the existing buildings were converted into biology & physics laboratories along with four class rooms. In 1983 the commerce section was added by Rev. Fr. Thomas D’Souza. However, it had to be closed due to unavoidable reasons in 1985. Later, it was started again in 2006-2007 by Rev.Fr. Louis Mascarenhas. In 2007 a state of art Computer Lab was added followed by a toilet block in 2008. In 2009, another wing ‘Jubilee Block’ was added to the junior section with a broad staircase and an elevator by the present principal Rev. Fr. Louis Mascarenhas. Presently, the college is affiliated to the Council for the Indian School Certificate, New Delhi. Accommodates more than 7990 male students offering commerce and science steams. The motto of the College is Semper Sursum .
