Lubbock Lake Landmark

Lubbock Lake Landmark, also known as Lubbock Lake Site, is an important archeological site and natural history preserve in the city of Lubbock, Texas. The preserve is 336 acres and is a protected state and federal landmark. There is evidence of ancient people and extinct animals at Lubbock Lake Landmark. It has evidence of nearly 12,000 years of use by ancient cultures on the Llano Estacado. It is run by the Museum of Texas Tech University. Visitors can watch active archeological digs. Volunteers from around the world help with the ongoing excavations each summer, and local people can volunteer also, making the site accessible for non-scientists. There are both guided and self-guided tours offered throughout the year. The landmarks hours of operation are Tuesday-Saturday from 9am-5pm, and Sunday from 1pm-5pm. The site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is a designated National Historic and State Archeological Landmark.

National Ranching Heritage Center

The National Ranching Heritage Center, a museum of ranching history, is located on the campus of Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. The NHRC features almost fifty authentic ranch buildings dating from the late 18th to the mid-20th century. These structures include a railroad depot, homesteads, barn, schoolhouse, windmills and other historic structures. One views the exhibits through a self-guided walking tour. It is free to the public. Until 1999, the NHRC was a part of the Museum of Texas Tech University, to which is adjacently located. It was begun by the first director of the museum, the historian and archaeologist William Curry Holden. From 1977-1980, Jim Humphreys, who managed the Pitchfork Ranch in Dickens and King counties from 1965–1986, was the board chairman of the center. He is considered one of the major modern figures in Texas ranching and agriculture. The NHRC has also received donations from Montie Ritchie, the manager of the JA Ranch southeast of Amarillo from 1935 until his retirement in 1993. In 2013, David M. "Matt" Brockman was named NHRC executive director. Formerly, he has been the administrative manager of the Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show, commonly known as the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

Lubbock Texas Temple

The Lubbock Texas Temple is the 109th operating temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints . The Lubbock Texas Temple joins three other LDS temples in Texas in serving 220,000 members of the church who live in the state. The Lubbock Temple serves western Texas and eastern New Mexico, an area with about 13,500 members. Despite a rainstorm, many attended the temple groundbreaking ceremony held on November 4, 2000. During the open house held prior to the dedication of the new temple, more than 21,500 people toured the building. The Lubbock Texas Temple was dedicated by LDS Church president Gordon B. Hinckley on April 21, 2002. The temple is a smaller temple and shares a site with a stake center. The exterior of the temple is finished with empress white and majestic gray granite quarried in China. It is of classic modern design with a single spire, topped by a statue of the Angel Moroni. The temple has a total of 16,498 square feet , two ordinance rooms, and two sealing rooms.

Texas Technological College Dairy Barn

The Texas Technological College Dairy Barn, located on the Texas Tech University campus in Lubbock, Texas, was constructed from 1926-27 and served as a teaching facility for 40 years. The building was designed by architect W. C. Hedrick of Fort Worth, Texas, with assistance from Agricultural Dean A. H. Leidigh and Professor W. L. Stangel. Until 1935, students would bring their own cows to campus and market their own milk products through the Student Dairy Association. After 1927, the Dairy Manufacturers department sold milk and ice cream to Lubbock residents and college cafeterias. The university moved its dairy facility elsewhere in 1967 and abandoned the dairy barn. From 1990 through 1992, students raised funds to preserve the barn as a symbol of Texas Tech's agricultural roots. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Texas Tech University

Texas Tech University, often referred to as Texas Tech, Tech, or TTU, is a public research university in Lubbock, Texas, United States. Established on February 10, 1923, and originally known as Texas Technological College, it is the leading institution of the four-institution Texas Tech University System. The university's student enrollment is the sixth-largest in the state of Texas, as of the Fall 2014 semester. The university shares its campus with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, making it the only campus in Texas to house an undergraduate university, law school, and medical school at the same location. The university offers degrees in more than 150 courses of study through 13 colleges and hosts 60 research centers and institutes. Texas Tech University has awarded over 200,000 degrees since 1927, including over 40,000 graduate and professional degrees. The Carnegie Foundation classifies Texas Tech as having "highest research activity". Research projects in the areas of epidemiology, pulsed power, grid computing, nanophotonics, atmospheric sciences, and wind energy are among the most prominent at the university. The Spanish Renaissance-themed campus, described by author James Michener as "the most beautiful west of the Mississippi until you get to Stanford", has been awarded the Grand Award for excellence in grounds-keeping, and has been noted for possessing a public art collection among the ten best in the United States. The Texas Tech Red Raiders are charter members of the Big 12 Conference and compete in Division I for all varsity sports. The Red Raiders football team has made 36 bowl appearances, which is 17th most of any university. The Red Raiders basketball team has made 14 appearances in the NCAA Division I Tournament. Bob Knight has coached the second most wins in men's NCAA Division I basketball history and served as the team's head coach from 2001 to 2008. The Lady Raiders basketball team won the 1993 NCAA Division I Tournament. In 1999, Texas Tech's Goin' Band from Raiderland received the Sudler Trophy, which is awarded to "recognize collegiate marching bands of particular excellence". Though the majority of the university's students originate in the southwestern United States, the school has served students from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Texas Tech University alumni and former students have gone on to prominent careers in government, business, science, medicine, education, sports, and entertainment.

Lubbock Memorial Civic Center

The Lubbock Memorial Civic Center, a convention center located in Lubbock, Texas, was built in 1977 and dedicated to the memory of local residents who died in a 1970 tornado that struck the site of the center. In front of the center is a statue honoring Buddy Holly, who had died in 1959. Inside the convention center, which was recently refurbished at a cost of $2 million, are the following facilities: A 40,000-square-foot exhibit hall which also doubles as a 2,995-seat indoor arena and can be used for sporting events, trade shows, conventions, banquets, and concerts . Attached to the exhibit hall is a 11,000-square-foot balcony with retractable seating. Its ceiling height is 30 feet from floor to rafters, 45 feet from floor to roof. A 14,104-square-foot banquet hall, used for banquets and smaller meetings, seating up to 1400 persons. A 1,395-seat theater used for smaller concerts, stage shows and other events. It is the home of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and Ballet Lubbock. It features four concession stands, four box offices, and five dressing rooms, among amenities. A 28,000-square-foot pedestrian mall marking the main lobby for the complex, and an outdoor plaza complete with fountains, waterfalls, bridges and additional landscaping. A mezzanine room with a 100-foot glass wall. Twelve meeting rooms and a terrace suite. The annual National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration, co-sponsored by the American Cowboy Culture Association, is hosted annually at the Lubbock center from Thursday through Sunday after Labor Day.

University Medical Center

University Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas is a public, non-profit 412-bed hospital. UMC is the primary hospital of the UMC Health System and is owned by the taxpayers of Lubbock County. It serves as the primary teaching hospital for the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC). UMC had the first Level 1 Trauma Center in West Texas, the John A. Griswold Trauma Center, and it is still the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the region. UMC's Timothy J. Harnar Burn Center is the only Burn Center in the region. UMC's Children's Unit is a part of the Children's Miracle Network and includes a pediatric intensive care unit and a neonatal intensive care unit. Lubbock's 911 Emergency Medical Service is provided through University Medical Center, serving over 300,000 people (city and county) with MICU (paramedic-staffed) ambulances. UMC EMS responds to over 31,000 911 calls per year through a priority dispatch system.
