Azhakodi Devi Temple

Azhakodi Devi Temple is a Hindu temple in Thiruthiyadu, Thiruthiyadu, Kozhikode, Kerala, India. It is about 1.5 m away from the Mofussil bus stand and 2.5 km from the KSRTC Bus stand to the Kozhikode city. Azhakodi Devi Mahashekthram is located in Thiruthiyad, Kozhikode District, Kerala, South India. It is one of the famous Devi temple, situated hardly 1.5 m away from the Mofussil Bus stand and 2.5 km from the KSRTC Bus stand, the area still retains the beauty and charm of un-spoilt rural settings within the heart of the kozhikode City. The temple and the Kalayana Mandapom are administered by the Malabar Devaswom Board. The most ancient and historically renowned temple “Azhakodi Devi Mahashekthram”, has its deity in the form of “Bhadrakali” in a calm disposition. The temple consists of seven maternal incarnation-brahamani, maheshwari, kowmari, vaishanavi, vaarahi, indarni and chamundi. A sivalinga is also present. There is a legend behind this temple, that the samoothiri entrusted six of his generals to the temple “Arikkodikkavu” which is now renowned as Azhakodi Devi mahashekthram. An idol of “Bhavani Devi” was also given by the samoothiri which was given to him by the traders of Gujarat. The generals were instructed to place the idol adjacent to the “Bhagavathi Idol” in the “Arikkodikkavu” sreekovil and worship the same. The temple till 1965 known as “Arikkodikkavu” was later renamed as “Azhakodi Devi Mahashekthram”. During the Malayalam month of “Medom”, Kodiyettem is celebrated on the “Uthrattadi Nakshathram”. Pallivetta is celebrated on the “Thiruvathira Nakshathram”, and “Arrattu” is conducted on the “Punartham Nakshathram”.“Bhagavatha Saptaham” is also conducted every year. The other festivals are “Navarathri Mahotsavam” and “Vijayadasami Pooja”. This temple is situated at Thiruthiyad which is at the heart of the Kozhikode city. This temple is governed by the elected members. The Malabar Devaswom Board has a direct access towards the day-to-day activities of the temple.

Mananchira

Mananchira is a man-made freshwater pond situated in the centre of the city of Kozhikode in Kerala, southern India. The pond is 3.49 acres in area, is rectangular in shape and is fed by a natural spring. Mananchira was built as a bathing pool by the Zamorin Mana Vikrama, the feudal ruler of Kozhikode in around the 14th century. The laterite obtained from excavating the pond was used to construct two palaces to the east and west. In the late 19th century, Calicuts municipal council decreed that the pond was to be reserved exclusively for drinking purposes, and prohibited its use for bathing, washing and recreational activities—a ruling that has remained in place ever since. The pond is an important source of drinking water for Kozhikode, but is susceptible to pollution from municipal sewage, domestic waste, and pollutants from nearby textile factories. An analysis of the water in 2000 by scientists from the Central Water Analysis Laboratory and Pondicherry Central University found that the pond was particularly bacteriologically contaminated during the monsoon season, and was highly alkaline afterwards. Mananchira Square, a park complex surrounding the lake was opened in 1994. Previously the Manachira Square was known as Mananchira Maidanam and was famous for football. Several football tournaments were conducted here. The Manachira Maidanam was also famous for the religious activity called Mananchira Ayyappan vilak. The Manachira Maidanam was transformed and named as Mananchira Square up on the leadership of then Kozhikode District Collector Mr Amithab Khant, who was the administrator, by closing two roads in the vicinity. The place for conducting the MANANCHIRA AYYAPPAN VILAK was shifted to Muthalakullam Maidanam . The officials also kept a rule that Mananchira Square will not be used for any cultural or religious purpose, whereas nowadays its widely used for cultural purposes.

Muchundi Mosque

Muchundi Mosque is a mosque located at Kuttichira, Kozhikode in the Indian state of Kerala. Built in the 13th century AD with its unique Hindu temple architectural style, it is one of the oldest mosques in present-day Kerala. Muchundi Mosque holds a bilingual stone inscription known as the Muchundi Inscription dating back to the 13th century. It is written in Arabic and an older form of Malayalam language. Scholars have translated it to read that one Shihabuddin Raihan, a freed slave built this mosque out of his own money on the land donated by the local ruler. The mosque is associated with Shaikh Zainuddin Makhdoom II, the famous author of Tuhafat-ul-Mujahidin. It was in the mosque where Shaikh Zainuddin Makhdoom II used to teach young students and probably this is where he wrote his famous book which chronicles the history of Islam in Malabar.

Pavangad

Pavangad is a junction in Kozhikode in the Indian state of Kerala. It is located about 6.5 km north of Calicut on the Calicut-Kannur National Highway 17 and is bounded by the Arabian Sea at the west, Canoli Canal at east and Korapuzha River at the north. The Arabian Sea lies to the west of Pavangad.State Highway 54 starts from Pavangad and ends in Kalpetta. The Puthiyappa Harbour is the beach side of Pavangad. Nearby cities: Westhill, Kozhikode City. Most of the automobile showrooms are located in Pavangad. Audi, Volkswagen, Nissan,Harley Davidson, Hyundai, Royal Enfield, Eicher are among them. Kozhikode KSRTC Depot and Electricity Sub station also located in Pavangad. Late Mr. K. T. Muhammed was a resident in pavangad, popularly known as KT, was a Malayalam playwright and screenwriter. He died on March 25, 2008 at Pavangad. Pavangad is a fast-growing residential area towards the northern city limits of Kozhikode. The important places in Pavangad are Puthur durga devi temple which is one of the oldest temple in Calicut, CSI Church and STATE BANK OF INDIA Pavangad Branch. Sneha Residence association is one of the major residential associations in this locality which comprises 237 houses.

Beypore

Beypore or Beypur is an ancient port town and a Municipality town in Kozhikode district in the state of Kerala, India. The place was formerly known as Vaypura / Vadaparappanad. Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore, named the town "Sultan Pattanam". There is a marina and a beach while Beypore port is one of the oldest ports in Kerala, which historically traded with the Middle East. Beypore is noted for building wooden ships, known as dhows or urus in the Malayalam language. These ships were usually bought by Arab merchants for trading and fishing but are now used as tourist ships. According to Captain Iwata, founder member of the Association of Sumerian ships in Japan, Sumerian ships might have been built in Beypore. There is evidence to prove that Beypore had direct trade links with Mesopotamia and was a prominent link on the maritime silk route.

Kuttichira Beach

Kuttichira or Thekkepuram is a quarter located inside the city of Kozhikode in the Indian state of Kerala. Its approximate boundaries are the Arabian Sea on the West, the Kallai river on the South, Vellayil(a fishing village) on the North, and the Kozhikode town on the East. The Kallai river flows through the south side of Thekkepuram. An iron railway bridge constructed across the river was built by the British, and later renovated by Indian railways. There is a large pool called Kuttichira, which attracts many visitors. Thekkepuram also houses some of the largest and oldest Tharavadus, which are traditional joint family houses. Many of these houses have more than 20 rooms and some of them are even equipped with swimming pools. Two ancient mosques, Muchundi Mosque and Mishkal Mosque are used as private places of worship. The Big Bazar, one of the oldest and biggest trading lanes in Malabar is located here. Thekkepuram beach and the Port Light House are easily accessible from this place.

Mankavu

Mankavu is a suburb of Kozhikode, in Kerala, India. It is known as the site of the Zamorin's kovilakam and it is called Mankavu Padinhare Kovilakam. Mankavu derives its name from the Zamorin's Mango Orchard that was in the area some historic records says that earlier was known as "Manavedan kavu" and got shortened into "Mankave" . The community is primarily residential, and is a common residential location for students from the local Zamorin's Guruvayurappan College. Krishna Varma and Ravi Varma, famous rebels of Calicut were born and brought up in Mankavu. Mankavu Road, a major thoroughfare in Kozhikode is named after this area. Actual Mankavu is situated on the left of the bypass road towards Tirur. It is predominantly inhabited by Muslims near the bypass road side and Hindus, which include few Brahmin families around the Thrissala Bhagavathy Kshethram, beyond the Kalpaka Theatre, a known spot in Mankavu. On to the right of the bypass road junction, the road leads to Chalapuram, known for schools, residential colonies, Shiva Kshetram, Ganapathy Kshetram. Thirssala Bhagavathy Kshethram, is the temple associated with the Zamorin's. The temple complex also have deities of Lord Krishna and Lord Shiva.

Kozhikode railway station

Kozhikode Railway Station also known as Calicut Railway Station is the largest railway station in the city of Kozhikode, India. The station has four platforms and two terminals. The first platform has a capacity to accommodate trains with 18 coaches and the third platform 20 coaches. The fourth one has the capacity to accommodate 24 coaches. It boasts of being the only A1 graded station in Palakkad Railway Division with the daily passenger turnout exceeding 8,000. It is one of the major railway stations in Kerala with trains connecting the city to other major cities in India such as Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Coimbatore, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore, Mangalore, Pune, Jammu Tawi and so forth. The other railway stations in the city include Kallayi Kozhikode South , Vellayil and West Hill . An integrated security system was installed at the station in 2012 featuring baggage scanners, CCTVs and vehicle scanners. The 125th anniversary of the station was celebrated on 2 January 2013.

The institute has five major engineering departments: Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering,Electronics and Communication Engineering and Applied Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering.
